Win Fab Airline Book W/ A Poem About Airliners.net

Thu Dec 09, 1999 6:56 pm

One of the best airline disaster novels ever written is 'Collision' by Spencer Dunmore (1971). It follows a captain with epilepsy who crashes his brand new 747-100 on landing in Africa and gets a job flyng 707s for a British charter airline. Nearly all of the book is set on the flightdecks of jets, and also involves an American DC8 captain who is havng an affair. There are a couple of other crashes, and title comes frm the final sequence where the British 707 and US DC8 collide over Toronto but both remain airborne. As well as action and suspense (and every technical detail is perfect), it is also very funny in places. I have a copy I have read dozens of times. It's a great book. Just down the road from my current temp job is a second hand bookshop and they have a copy. I will buy it (for about 20p) and send it postage-free to anywhere in the world, to the winner of my little competition. You have to write a poem (minimum of four lines) about how much you love Airliners.net. It doesn't have to rhyme or anything. Add them to this thread. I await your lyrical waxing with bated breath. Ha ha hee!

I now have the item in question. May I say I'm quite disappointed, I thought you guys were made of sterner stuff, that there would be dozens of sonnets on here by now, rhyming "Airbus vs Boeing" with "to Airliners.net I am going" to snap up this very rare (only ever seen it once before in all my years of scouting 2nd hand bookshops for aviation stuff) and excellent book. Come on!

Thanks Johan. I should add that I have just noticed that 1stClassFlyer made a brave stab with the following, found at the bottom of the 'Addicted To Airliners.net' thread: Airliners.net People, photos, forums Airliners.net. Wow. I feel choked with emotion. I think he really summed up how we all feel. In the absence of any other entries, we may have a winner. Anyone else want to have a go at acquiring Spencer Dunmore's classic and impossible-to-find piece of jet age literature?

I am not very good at writing poems, or anything that has to do with writing english, just go look at my report card which came in the mail today  , but I'll have a go at this. (There should be a unhappy face icon just before this, but I have bad luck at everything so it probably isn't.)

Airliners.net, what a great site,
I visit you every night.
I put my textbooks away,
and spend hours here each day,
I am adicted to you, I bet
but how can I stay mad at you, airliners.net.

I am not sure how to spell adicted, but oh well.

One More Thing

Fri Dec 10, 1999 3:28 am

I forgot to explain the meaning of my poem. I spend hours here daily, literally, so I never to my homework for school. My parents are mad at me because all my teachers wrote on my reoort card I need to try harder out of class, but I don't want to because I wouldn't be able to spend as much time here. I can't be mad at airliners.net for making my grades suffer, its just such a great site I can't stay away.

Oh yeah, the unhappy face appeared. I worked!

I was an aviation enthusiast
until I had find Airliners.net,
now I feel that blast
that I was looking on the internet.

I like Boeing
and also Airbus,
but I'm just going
to stay between us.

Merry Christmas to everybody

Ode To Airliners.net

Fri Dec 10, 1999 4:32 am

Okay...this is pretty lame, but I couldn't resist. I present to you now, my Ode to airliners.net:

It was love at first site
The moment I logged on that night.
I found the ultimate distraction,
And now it’s Airplane pics that bring me complete satisfaction.

For months I have been torn,
Do I surf Airliners.net or porn?
I only have so much time to spare,
I must choose the better of the pair.

Oh, Johan
Looky what you’ve done.
You’ve completely captured my mind,
And tore it away from a woman’s behind.

I come here for my fix,
Oh admin, please accept my pics!
Now I’m beginning to fret,
I’m addicted to you, Airliners.net

-Scott

My name is Scott, and I am addicted to writing trip reports.

Airliners.net

To airliners this i say,
You completely complete my rather long day,
With pictures and forums and news galore,
What could i want? Nothing more...

I come home and log on the net,
Will airliners come up? This i fret...
And when it does, a sigh of relief,
This has become my online sanctuary

Pictures of planes outside and in,
IM on here so much you might think it a sin!
Homework is never, ever done
But i stay here anyway my heart you have won

So in conclusion i want you to know
from your fabulous page i will never go
and when i am in the forums to talk about aviation with others
You get more attention then my dear little mother!

hehe,ok so i am finished
-Tony

Why would God make us all so different, if He wanted us to be the same?

This Is Great!

Fri Dec 10, 1999 5:40 am

I love it, after a sluggish start, these are exceeding my wildest expectations! Keep it up! And "Airbus vs Boeing" / "to Airliners.net I am going!", feel free to use it. Let it be part of a great and beautiful work of art!

I may have to dredge up more than one prize for this! Anyone heard of a novel called 'The Pilot' (mid 70s), the alcoholic DC8 captain who drinks on the job and has all manner of airborne terrors before having a spectacular crash on the runway? I may have two copies!

Keep 'em coming!

Winning Poem

How about we make the winning poem the motto of Airliners.net??

P.S. I stink at writing poems... but I'll spend my time in meteorology trying to formulate one!!!

It was a few months ago,
and I knew it was so.

I clicked on the Forum
my sprits were soring.

Many people like me,
it was plane to see.

So many topics,
That were not made without fiboroptics.

So much information was there,
had to pull out my hair.

Started going here every night,
and what a site.

To see so many people who loved avation,
and cant stand the train station.

People who would rater be at an airport.
with camras and sort.

taking pitures of the sky,
and wishing they could fly.

watiching airplanes soring,
never gets boring.

people who love there airline and job,
just makes me want to sob

We some times get at each others throat
but we are in the same boat

as avation lovers,
we are just like brothers

Thank you airliners.net
for you are number 1, i bet

for bringing enthusests together,
through good and bad weather.

Airliners.net is the best place around,
It has pictures of planes in the air and on the ground,
They have a chat room that is the best,
And the forum that never rests,
You go there and have a blast,
You will see modern planes and some from the past.

Even More...

Fri Dec 10, 1999 10:06 am

I was coming in to land,
But nothing for the next day was planned.

I went to check my mail,
And what I found was a trail.

There was a light, a landing light,
It was awfully bright.

It led me to place,
And when I found it you should have seen my face.

The place was called airliners.net,
If you want to learn about aviation go there and you will be set.

There are pictures many 747’s,
and even some of a 1-11’s.

Their pictures are so vast,
And with an 800MHz connection it is fast.

The have a chat room there,
With other enthusiast that really care!

The forum is never at rest,
And your questions are answered by best.

There is a news section too,
The purpose of that is to inform you.

If you have ever thought about a plane,
This site is right down your lane.

There's something fishy about airliners.net
You get hooked, line and sinker, without getting wet.

There's airline information and entertainment galore,
sharing interests and opinions with others is never a bore

Life is made for work and play,
Airliners.net is a nice way to end the day
It's here to stay!

Theres no better way to avoid tedius work
Theres no better wat to slack off
Its No better than Airliners.net

Cedarjet, Johan, and others
Moan, Bitch, and stab at posts
Is Boeing better than Airbus?
Is American better than United?
Lufthans or Air France?
Cathay or Thai?
Quantas of Ansett?
BA and AA?
Losing my Virginity...again Mr. Branson?

Forums, Pic Posts, and News
No better place to gossip
we got Yankees, Brits, Aussies, a few cuban refugees (me!) and some major Bull Shitters.
Johan keeps the Peace,

Are we all so damn cheap
that we must write poetry for a free book?
Well, yes! Dang it I want it.
Isnt airlners.net so great?

I love it here, thanks Johan for this gift, thanks all for making this the place to be!

To this Im so grateful.

You may wonder what site is so perfect,

a site thats to good to abuse,

I was going to judge these myself, mainly cos I thought there would be, like, three lame entries and that would be that. But you guys are really good (note that I have not attempted anything myself)!! I am going to need more than one prize, and a lot of postage! I have about three favourites, but if anyone else can voice an opinion I would love to hear from you. Reading through, there are a couple of lines that nearly bring a tear to the eye - check these out: I am addicted to you, I bet But how can I stay mad at you, Airliners.net We may get at each other's throat But we are all in the same boat Thank you for bringing enthusiasts together Through good and bad weather. I have an idea for a way of making ALL these into something really useful and cool, but I need to think it through a little. If in the meantime you want to influence the judge's decision, correspondence will gladly be entered into. And keep 'em coming if any of you have anything to add.

My Poem

Fri Dec 10, 1999 11:09 pm

I just got off work but I will give it a try.

An Ode to the page I visit
To the website that takes up my time
But in my heart all is right for I was made for flight
and Airliners.net makes it mine.

Here is a home for the many
who enjoy a gift for the few
We would rather be closer to heaven
than stuck down in traffic below

Whether you hate Logan or love Kai Tak
This is the place you should roam
Every night, every day, the world is one step away
on Airliners.net, our home!

Sometimes we dont all get along
On this site it takes all different types.

Some like Delta, some American, Some TWA
Others Virgin Atlantic or Good old B.A.
Some like the turboprops with shimmering wings
Others like widebodies with personal tv's

Whether we like Airbus or Boeing
On one thing we all can agree
To Airliners.net we'll be going
For all of the airplanes to see!

If you're hungry for talk
Or if you have a question
There's no better place to ask than
Our airline discussions!

Is there something on your mind?
Put these marvels to the test!
Faster than a shuttle flight
they'll have the answer to your quest.

If there's news in the air
Before they find the black box
You'll see the story printed here
for the flight loving flock.

So if flying is your passion
Make youself at home
And we hope that you'll come back again

Unless you're Frank Lorenzo!

I am still a young boy learning my ways,
and I can still remember that wonderful day...

I was searching for photos it wasn't easy for me,
when I found Airliners.net I realized how easy it could be

In the forums the people with their knowledge, I am grateful,
They help out my brain when I am forgetful.

The photos and links are simple and clear,
I hope I remember them when I am taking my ATP exam in 20 years.

After long flights I'll want to take a snooze,
but instead I will visit Airliners.net for some jokes or the news.

When I am old and in my death bed,
I'll think about all of these wonderful people and what they all said.

"Stay in school and don't let all the tests give you a fright, just drop by Airliners.net for companionship every night."

Writing so this thread goes to the top of the page again.

WHEN does this contest end?

If I am one of the winners I would much rather have a postcard from the UK Cedarjet than your books.

I think they sound really great and should go to the younger ones who also sent in poetry.

If I got a postcard that would be SO cool!

I need a deadline, and some more prizes - if unusual airline postcards are enough then that can be taken care of.

This is a really cool thread, we should get page added to the site for them. It's so cool that the Airbus vs Boeing and other debates are irrelevant in the face of how we all love aviation in the exact same way. Gawd bless you all etc etc.

Just out of interest, I have that book right here next to me!!! And it is a great book!

An Anglo-World Airlines 747 has a problem & lands on a shop in Eastern Africa - followed by an Amory 707 and TransStates DC-8 (NOT the Delta Connection airline!!!) colliding over Toronto.

The book is fantastic so get writing!!

In the faraway reaches of Washington State
Lay an empire, lazy and fat, but still great.
These folks were awakened, quite rudely in fact
By some bored Europeans who'd all made a pact
Which created a monster, that may have lacked tact
And the empire's blood started boiling and flowing
"It takes more than a cheap flying bus to beat Boeing"
Was the sneering invective that Everett was throwing.

Now nigh thirty years later, the tables have turned
Those Eurojets which were initially spurned
Had spread across England and Belgium and France
Fanned the flames of the fire beneath Boeing's pants
(Causing lots of us junkies to launch into rants)
So the airlines drew sides in a terrible fight
To decide who was right and who's cheapest in flight

So Boeing applied a brand new strategy
Gobbling up unsuspecting M-D
While across that big pond, Airbus got down and dirty
With the new A320, '340 and '30
And with all of the airlines, became rather flirty
So Swissair, Sabena, Aers Lingus & France
Let Airbus cut right in upon Boeing's Dance

Boeing then spat out the new triple-seven
(Removing the need for the MD-11)
And brought the old 737 to date
And, since the A318's coming too late
Put the 717 on TWA's plate
Then they won SAS and the ex-Eastern Bloc
(And the SAS thing seems to come as a shock)

So we sit 'fore our screens and we grump and we groan
About costs per seat/mile and Livery tones
And the central debate seems to be which plane's cool
And which one's a pile of elephant stool
But we have to admit that we like every one
Some of us work with them, some just have fun
All the beauty inherent in these great machines
Affects us right down to our toes (and our spleens)
From the cockpit to narrow coach seats aft the screen
We know where the Av-talk's as good as it gets
Blame it on Johan- Airliners.net.

My airliners net, you touch my heart like an electric spear..After rotation, I tell my co-pilot to raise the gear. Entering this site with joy and excitment, is like taking off from the runway pavement. I spend my time here with great interest, when leaving, is like the aircraft is touching down, reversing, taxiing to gate and comming to rest. But tomorrow I will come here again, like telling my co-pilot before startup to ignite the nr3 engine fan.

Everyone else is doing it, so why not me?

Every day before anything else,
I come here for some serious sense.
Every night before I go to sleep,
I take a look at the pics they keep.

Whenever I'm angry or really sad,
a visit here makes me forget I'm mad.
Whenever I'm bored and all is blue,
I do what everyone else seems to do.

Everyone is always welcome here,
when you're here there's nothing to fear.
Everybody, get your instruments set,
we're cleared to land at airliners.net

Ok here goes nothing:

Airliners.net the joyful site
Where I spend most of my night
Watching, waiting and writing
To see what people will say next

The smile on my face
That comes with this place
Is more than I had ever expected.
The learning that comes
From all the world
Is something that will never be forgotten

This amazing place
That accompanies me everyday
Will never be forgotten
When I fly, when I wait
Aviation is everything and no better place
To express the grace
Than Airliners.net

Well there it is!!
