AA 767s With 777 Interiors To HNL?

Mon Jun 23, 2003 1:09 am

Next month I am flying to Honolulu. My LAX-HNL segment is a 767. Any chance it could be one with the new 777 styled cabin? Which aircraft (reg #) have them? Are they retrofitting the older 763s with the new style? Thanks for your help.

Here’s a question for you (and I mean no disrespect): why would a company that came within hours of bankruptcy several months ago spend millions installing new interiors on its aircraft?

Because improving customer satisfaction and engendering brand loyalty, therefore increasing revenue, is the only way to improve your bottom line.

Cost cutting alone is not enough.

Now THAT’S the funniest thing I’ve read in awhile! Spending millions installing new interiors on fairly new aircraft (that had their interiors renovated very recently) increases consumer satisfaction and engineers brand loyalty?! AA doesn’t have the funds to install the new seats on the B757 and AB6 fleet (and AA has repeatedly said those fleet types won’t receive them when they undergo conversion to LRTC), let alone install new interiors on the B763 fleet!

There’s a lot of cheaper ways to increase consumer satisfaction and engineer brand loyalty – like brining back meals to longer flights that don’t have them…

I think the best person to ask would be Kevi747, as he works on them all the time.  Laugh out loud

Last week I flew from SAN to ATL on an old DL 767-300. The interior looked like HELL!

The next leg of my journey was from ATL to FLL on a brand new 767-400. What a huge difference! The '400 is an awesome machine and the new interior makes a huge difference. I can't figure out why the plane didn't manage to secure more orders. I hope to get on another in the near future.

Sort of a related subject I guess.

I've flown the LAX-HNL route a number of times on AA's 763s. They have the older interior, with 2 classes of service. There is an expanded first class section, seating 2x2x2 with the standard business class seat. Coach is the typical 2x3x2. Nothing special, but at least more room to move around than the 757s that AA is using a lot now on the Hawaii flights.

Get use to them, because now that the B752 will be converted into LRTC, the B763 remaining on LAX-HNL/OGG will likely become B752...

FWIW, the B752 helped expand service into Hawaii... the B752 only replaced the B763 on SFO-HNL (which was a pre-9/11 change, although the flight didn't switch to a B752 until afterward ... AA was actually going to cancel this flight, so a B752 is better than no service). The B752 flying between SJC-HNL, LAX-HNL, LAX-OGG, LAX-LIH and LAX-KOA (acquired from TW) were either new service or added frequencies.

Also, the new B763 delivered this year have flown LAX-HNL... I don't recall them having B777 interiors, although I understand they're set-up for (but don't have) PTVs... I haven't been on one yet.

If you absolutely must fly to Hawaii in 763's with the 777 interiors, your best bet will be with HA. I believe most of their 763's have the 777 interiors.

Actually, it'd be DL or CO -- both those airlines fly exclusively B764 with B777 interiors to Hawaii. HA has a few B763 with crapped out interiors from their previous operator.

I thought all the HA 763s were delivered new. No?

Nope, some came from previous operators, among them LTU:

They aren't. Only the new deliveries (I believe specifically just the 9 aircraft they tried to defer but Boeing had completed and would not defer) have the 777 interior.

Four HA 763s were previously operated by LTU. All others were delivered new, but not all of them have new interiors. I understand the newer ones (the 9 delivered after the four LTU aircraft), but the original 3, which were new build aircraft have standard 767 interiors. I can't confirm since I've only been on the original 3 763's (580, 581, and 582) along with one of the ex-LTU aircraft.

American Airlines has not spent any money redesiging 767-300ER interiors. In the past few months they have taken deliveries of 767-300ERs with newer, more modern interiors which, as has been mentioned, are fitted for PTVs though lack them (like coach in DL's 764s).

I believe all new 767-200/-300's ordered since 1998 or so have been delivered with the new interiors.

HA a/c's with the new interiors would be a/c's 587-593. I believe they didn't take delivery of the last 2 a/c's because of the bankruptcy filling.

Your chances of getting on an AA 767 with the new interior for your flight to Hawaii are quite slim. They have 54 767-300's.

Customer satisfaction and engendering brand loyalty has NOTHING to do with aircraft or interiors. Regretably, the mileage game is the prize. If any airline wants to benefit from customer satisfaction and brand loyalty, let them concentrate on passenger and inflight service. Give me an old 707 or DC-8 without movies or music, but with a high level of "graciousness" (a term long forgotten) and great service and food, and you can forget 767's with 777 interiors and all the rest of the crap. Get me there in comfort and friendliness. Of course, safety is the bottom line with any travel product (cruise ship, airplane, train, you name it - we certainly have our share of problems with each). People pleasing is the most important factor - something long missing in our airlines today.

Those good airline days are over anyway!

And do not fly an airline which takes over several good airlines (Reno Air, TWA etc. ) and then discontinue all or many of their routes and fire their good employees.

Just don`t fly them!

(rolling eyes @ AAAAAAAA)

I never knew AA discontinued most/all of TWA's routes... Interesting... I thought AA still had that hub over there in STL that I flew through last week. I guess they got rid of that quickly...

Thanks for your help. AA was not my first choice for travel, but I had enough AAdvantage miles which is what I am using. It does not matter if I happen to get one of the new 767's or not but, it would be nice. However, on my return, I am flying the 757 and hopefully it will still have MRTC. I really would have liked to take HA or CO but a free ticket beats a $700 ticket. Again, thanks for your help!

AA still has a decent hub at STL. If you want to see a case of them dismantiling something, take a look at what's left of Reno Air's network.

Look at the basics - get rid of the loyalty games (thank you, Mr. Crandall) and we would be back to something that resembles civilized transportation. No fights at gates over who gets the upgrade, no inventory control that gives 2 seats to a free ticket; I could go on. It seems that marketing is the name of the game in every industry. Wow, would I like to have owned all the trees that have been cut down for mass mailings! Give up the mileage shit, airlines - maybe then you'd make a profit.....

AA's new 767-300's N341AA-N347AA have the 777 style interior. None of the old AA767's have been changed nor will they. So it is possible you may get one.

Gee, it's too bad AA doesn't operate in a vacuum, but changing market conditions and economics sometimes necessitates unpopular (emotional?) business decisions.

Since AA and Reno didn't have overlapping routes, surely the reason for AA dismantling Reno wasn't to eliminate competition? Sure, AA bought Reno for the purpose of dismantling it.  Yawn
