The Upper Deck Of A 747 Freighter

Mon Jun 23, 2003 3:39 am

Hi guys and gals, this maybe a stupid question, but what is in the Upper deck of a 747 Freighter?? Is it used for cargo too? Crew rests? I am assuming there would be toilets/galleys, but especially on the 747-300 Freighter, there seems a lot of space there, what's it used for?? And is there a difference in those aircraft converted from passenger versions to those bulit purposefully as freighters??

When I visited the upper deck on a Cargolux 747-400F the captain told me the
seats in the upper deck are used by passengers traveling with their cargo for example horse owners. I read somewhere the 747-300Fs are somewhat more
aerodynamic than the 747-200Fs because of the longer upper deck.

The 747-400F doesn't have the extended upper deck, it has a 747-200 style forward fuselage... but I bet you'll also be able to find some converted pax 747-400Fs that have that extended upper deck, and therefore that extra aerodynamic benefit.

Many operators do have a crew rest lounge in the upper deck area... some also have a section for mail-type freight or lightweight stuff that's not containerized.

In the one I have seen, there is crew seats (nice ones) and the lav and galley. Lots of room. The stairway is just a metal ladder usually unlike the passenger versions.

On KLM 743 freighters there are a couple of old business class seats, a toilet and a galley block. The aft part of the streched upperdeck is closed by a wall with a door. I don´t think it is used.

Impressive empty floor space too, no overhead bins, would me a good dance floor. However there is no inflight entertainment system on board

Hi Boeing747-311, I was thinking the same thing! So, after a lot of searching, the only one I could find here was the following, inside the upper deck of a Cargolux 744F....

I understand from an inside source that Dragonair has a cabin upstairs that they use for pax movement and that they have a FA that serves here. Can anybody confirm? Does anybody know why Martinair always has a FA in uniform travelling on their cargo flights and what does he/she do? Must be a long flight alone looking after the boys up front.........suppose a good book would do if there is no IFE!

When I was up on a China Air 742, they had 2 rows of seats all for the captain and reserves.

Following on from the 74F, what about other large freighters? MD11, DC10 etc?? Do they have a rest area too?

I would imagine they would just behind the cockpit, (where the first class would be)
I also should mention the pilots were lounging in those seats during the pre-flight.

Those KA freighters were actually former SQ's Big Top but converted to freighters, so not a surprise if they kept the Business Class seats upstairs!

Interesting on the Kalitta shot, the upper deck and flight deck seem to be open plan - no door or anything.

Interesting line-up of pictures that show a lot of difference. LH is very frugal, I´ve been on one that looked exactly like on the picture. Made me wonder why didn´t they have some old 1st class seats or at least businessclass available instead of coach? Where did these go?

Interesting also the 744F of Cargolux. Makes you wonder why there are only 3 windows on the 744F upper deck. If I´m a millionaire with horses on board I would expect a window!

The SVA MD11 have a crew rest container on postion 1L. It has 4 bunks and 2 seats, power and airco. It is the size of a AMJ-container. It weighs approx 700kg and cost +- 1 million US dollar.

If this container is not loaded, no dangerous goods can be carried on mainddeck as it is certified as fire-barrier.

SVA also has 2 seats in the courrier-space.

On KE -400s the upstairs is very nice. 6 biz class seats with 2 crew bunks. On the only -300 it is about the same but much more room, considering it has the stretch. Our MD-11s have a half-assed fold-out crew area just behind the captain's seat (other side of bulkhead...), and 1 or two jump seats in the entry area. Not exactly plush by any means...

We use ours for people traveling with their cargo, usually horses or other large live animals. And actually, there really isn't enough room to put freight up there, and besides, trying to wrassle anything larger than a suitcase up the ladder is not fun.

regards,
Tom
