Shortest Flight On A 747

Mon Jun 23, 2003 9:47 am

Hello!

I was wondering what was the shortest scheduled on a 747.
In Japan, I believe it is Tokyo-Komatsu (kanazawa) with a scheduled flight time of 1h.

A few examples of past sectors come to mind

BA operated BAH to MCT in early eighties ( part of LHR to SYD )

Also operated KUL to SIN with BA

Both of these are less than 1 hour

Correct me if im wrong but also LHR to BAH to AUH was a 747

BAH to AUH is only about 45mins

CX flies a 747-400 into Adelaide every Sunday morning arriving at 9:05 am as CX105 from HKG. Then at about 10:30am this aircraft departs for Melbourne and makes a stopover, which is only a 1 hour flight, on it's way to HKG.

Pan Am, in the 80's, had SFO LAX SFO flights:

SFO-LAX on 747sp (same plane continuing onto SYD and return)
LAX-SFO on 747 (same plane continuing onto LHR and return)

the sfo-lax-sfo flights were sold separately if desired.

British Airways operates daily on the LHR-BAH-DOH using the B747-400 since late May, before it was on the B777. The distance on BAH-DOH is only 79nm. Air India used to operate this route with a 747-200 too and other large widebodies like the A340 operate(d) on the route too.

SQ and MH does the SIN-KUL vv. with a 744 during peak periods like the festive season (Chinese New Year) etc. The actual time of flying is actually only about 30 mins, or 25 mins on good days!

I hope the question relates to 747 cargo flights as well. Anyway these are some of the shortest flights I have flown on 747 cargo flights. All of them has block times of 1 hr +/- 5 minutes and typical flight times of around 35-40 minutes.

SIN-KUL
STN-AMS
NGO-NRT

Other short sectors with block time around 1 hr 20-30 ninutes include

NRT-KIX-NRT
AMS-CDG
SFO-LAX-SFO

Some others which slips my mind right now.

Aer Lingus DUB - SNN only took 25 minutes on a 747, before EI got rid of them for A330's.

PEN-KUL on MASKargo B742 and Air Atlanta Icelandic B742Fs ops for MAS could be one of the shortest with real flying time only about 35-40 mins. MAS used to operate B744s on this route on certain days but as of now it is only on demand for the B744 but then in November we would have KUL-PEN-LHR.

Other carriers flying KUL-PEN with a B747 includes Korean Air Cargo and China Airlines Cargo.

UAL used to fly the 747-200 from SAN-LAX in the 1980s. It then went on to HNL, then on to Auckland,New Zealand I believe.

One of the shortest that I know of is BON-CUR flight time 25 minutes KLM 747 in the old days 747 could not go fully loaded to AMS so the flights where routed to CUR from BON and SXM. I think we had this tread before.

So say a B744 was flying between two airports with a flying time of 45 minutes - what would be the rough altitude? Would it fly relatively low or would it be roughly the same as for longer flights?

BA used to operate LGW-MAN-ISB using the B744. I guess the LGW-MAN would be 35-40 minutes, because I flew LHR-MAN which was 30.

OA, JFK to BOS on the way to ATH with 742, (when they still serviced that route up until about 2 yrs ago). Amazing as it was usually packed with passengers and a full load of fuel when departing JFK for BOS. It did not take on fuel at BOS and was topped off in JFK. I assume it may have been close to MLW when landing at BOS.

On a short term contract as 747 pilot with Air Atlanta in 1993, which leased airplanes to Saudia, we operated quite a few times from Jeddah to Medina, or the opposite, the flight takes about 20 minutes from JED to MED, if you takeoff towards the North from Jeddah, and they land North at Medinah...

The much missed Wardair used to operate a 747 on YYZ-LBA-BHX during the 80's. LBA-BHX is about 120 miles or 20 mins flying time.

I think for a short flight on a regular basis, the shortest 747 routes are those flown by JL and NH on Japanese domestic routes using 747SR's (which I believe are mostly retired) and 747-400D's. I believe the longest of those flights (excluding flights to Okinawa) are under 90 minutes long.

Late 80's/early 90's PIA used to operate some of the following routes:

Paris/London
London/Paris
Amsterdam/Paris
Paris/Amsterdam
Frankfurt/Paris
Paris/Frankfurt
Amsterdam/Frankfurt
Frankfurt/Amsterdam

presently once in a while they might do an Islamabad/Lahore run on a 743.

Saudia also operate a 744 from Jeddah to Riyadh and Riyadh to Dammam on a continuation flights from the US.

I gotta ask why did the airline operate a 747 on a 20 minute flight? Harldy seems worth it. Was the demand on these short sectors really that high that a 747 was warranted? On a 20 min flight i'm guessing they'd probably level out at 10,000feet or something like that?

Virgin Atlantic goes from TAB-GND-TAB.. each leg is about 15 minutes....

Of course the flight originates and ends in LGW, but the flight is shared between GND and TAB.

National, for a short time, flew a 747 FLL-MIA in just a bit more time than it took to drive between the two airports when you add in the neager 20 minute check in and taxi time of 30 years ago. Now it would work out to a 5 hour transit time using the airlines.

BA occasionally uses a 747 LHR-AMS vv. when demand is too high for a 757 or the planned aircraft breaks down and a 747 is the closest available spare.
That's about 40 minutes.

These are not SCHEDULED flights as the topic says but when SIA still had the maintenance base at Paya Lebar airport in mid 80s, they used to ferry aircrafts between Changi and Paya Lebar. (more of a circuit than a flight)

And JAL positions aircrafts between NRT and HND even at present.

As someone mentioned above, JAL does a LAS-LAX flight (about 50 minutes) with a 744, which continues on to NRT.

I believe UA used to do HNL-OGG with a 742...
