Good News From Ireland -Travel Tax Going!

Fri Dec 10, 1999 4:04 am

Ireland is getting rid of a longstanding £5 travel tax, paid on tickets issued in Ireland, from 1 January 2000.

Any chance of other countries copying this?

I'm delighted that we're going in the right direction, but Britain must have the highest travel tax in the world. It is a flat rate, which means that a student flying home to Edinburgh from Luton for the weekend at about £40($65) has to pay the same as a pop star flying to NY on Concorde. I recently flew to the US and although I got a cheap fare I ended up paying a total of over £50 ($80) in taxes. Governments should realise that promoting aviation is in their long term interests; it is now no longer a luxury.

Ireland now has to face the decision to scrap the most ludicrous aviation regulation in the world, the infamous Shannon stopover, under which - for every one flight from Dublin to the US, another must go from Shannon, a region of around 100,000 people. But that's another day's post!

Hey Kaitak, never realised you were Irish, there seems to be a lot of us in here, or maybe, there a lot of people who just want to be!! (j/k)
anyway, while it is great that Ireland is getting rid of the tax, as you said yourself, it was never really a problem here, £5 on the face of things is nothing. The real pain was Englands tax, which always pushed the price up for any sort of good looking deals. Also, even transisting through london to go somewhere else, which always seems to be the case with me, costs a fortune. It really is stupid, and some would say illegal??
anyway, maybe they will see sense soon, but considering they are pushing up passport prices in England, it seems the Labour governement don't want the English to fly!!!
as for the Shannon stop over, well enough said.

Yeah! Kai tak, I thought you were from HK! But anyway, I would say good riddance to the scrapping of the tax. As Kaitak mentioned, the UK airport tax is riddiculously high and unjustifiable! It penalises travellers and worst still, hardly any visible improvements are made! I flew easyJet to Amsterdam and the tax was nearly the same price as my plane ticket! Can you imagine that? I think it is a rip off! It is a pity that it is Ireland and not the UK that is getting rid of the tax. I guess British travellers would have just to bear with this unneccessary burden and live with it!

Ah, but one must give a bit of credit to Shannon, and it's bumpy landings when there is a good wind (which is nearly always!!)
