Photos Of The Huge Main Deck Lounges On 70's 747s?

Tue Jun 24, 2003 10:01 am

Hi All,

Deep in my recollection I remember seeing pictures of lounges in 747s when they were first introduced in the early 70s. I remember seeing a huge main deck coach lounge with sofas and tables...I think it was on American Airlines. Looks like they took up an incredible amount of space! Did they actually fly them like this or were these publicity photos similar to the ones you see for the A380?

Now, I've seen pictures of the little first class lounges on the upper deck, but I can't find any pictures of the main deck coach lounges anywhere. Somebody (me perhaps?) should put together a website with aircraft lounge photos or we should have a section for them on a.net. Any leads to pictures are appreciated.

They were for real. There is a website out there (sorry I don't have the address) that deals with the crash of Eastern 401. Maybe you could do a GOOGLE search under "Eastern 401" but it has a photo of the coach lounge that was on Eastern L1011's in the day. The first class lounge on Eastern L1011's actually had a chandelier!

I'm not a real aeronautical engineer, I just play one on Airliners.net.

have you read Lovegrove's "Airline: Identity, Design and Culture"? It has many photos of old cainb interiors and may be a help to you.

Go to your local bookstore and have a glance.

I have the above book...It is a wonderful book but unfortunately when it comes to lounges it only has pictures of older prop planes and the upper deck lounges on 747s. It does have a couple of pictures of VS upper class main deck cabin lounge. It is a great book for those interested in airline uniforms and food service...

For some great shots of Braniff International lounges, try:

Braniff, like some other airlines had lounge space both on the main and upper decks of the 7-4.

Hey TKCOM, that picture is just friggin classic! Wardrobe a la Chess King, '70s hairdo, looks like a heavy-set version of Bobby Orr relaxing in the off-season...the only thing missing is a Farrah Fawcett wannabe stew in the background with a loud mini.

Boy those were the days!

Is that Benny Hill in that pic? At least the guy could be mistaken for him.

The main deck lounge on AA 747s was in the aft cabin and, from what I have seen in pictures, quite spacious.

I flew on United and TWA 747-100s; both airlines had coach lounges in the front of the main cabin, between the no. 1 and no. 2 exits. I only remember large lighted globes fastened to the tables. These lounges were removed after the 1974 oil crisis. BTW, the TWA coach seats featured inflatable air cushions, which one could adjust (soft/firm) electronically with the touch of a button.

Inflight entertainment was often in the form of live fashion shows, comedians, or musical performances. With all that, who needed PTVs? (Yes films were projected onto screens....
