UA's Former MCO Hub

Wed Jun 25, 2003 11:48 am

In the early 90's didn't UA consider MCO a small hub? Besides the flights that remain today (ORD, DEN, SFO, LAX and IAD), where else did they fly to from MCO?

UA flew to some Florida cities from MCO in the early 1990s, but as far as I know MCO was never a sizeable operation for them... it was always such for EA and DL, though.

It may have been a "focus city", but it was never a hub. They had a much larger operation at Miami.

Not too long ago, they used to have some pretty good capacity in MCO. 763 to DEN, ORD, LAX at various times if my memory is correct. Now they've scaled back. Well, they've scaled everything back.

At one point in the early 90's, United Express (ACA) operated several J32's out of MCO to RSW, PBI, and a few others I'm forgetting.

UA also flew MCO-MKE during that time, but it only lasted a short while.

I remember the UA mini hub at MCO but cant remember where they flew to. I do remember the schedules were set up for connections.
I think this was like 1990, 91 or 92.

Miami was never as large as the Orlando mini-hub in terms of flights. I believe at its high point Miami had about 30 daily departures. Orlando at its peak had about 50.

I always thought moving the South American flights from Miami to Orlando would have been a smart move. Keeps them away from AA and would allow the possibility of expansion.
My definition of cool ? Not trying so hard to be cool.

They flew to all the cities listed above plus most major cities in Florida. And they did it with 757's. 757's nonstop from MCO to MIA/TPA/FLL and PBI!

Yeah, except there is absolutley no business traffic and yields would be horrendous. Like AA's failed MCO-GRU experiment, UA doing Orlando-LatAm would never have lasted more than a few months. Until then, United still has a 737-500 flying MIA-MCO daily to connect to Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Sao Paulo.

Keep in mind the market for Latin American flights. Orlando has a decent sized South American population, but no where near that of Miami. Orlando's largest Latin American population is Puerto Rican which is served multiple times daily by AA and ATA flying to Puerto Rico. I just don't think there would be much demand for a MCO to Buenos Aires or Santiago like there would in Miami. At most they could possibly fill up a A320 on 3x weekly flights. COPA only flies here 4X weekly on a 73G

DC-10s were also used on the intra-Florida flights. I was on a DC-10 from MCO-FLL on a few occasions.

Believe it or not, United did fly MCO-MDW for a while in the late 80's as well.

I think that was my last flight in a 727-100.

I remember in the early 90's, UA served SRQ with a 757 flight to MCO. I believe that flight continued from MCO to IAD. UA does not serve SRQ anymore.

on weekends back in the late 80's, ua use to fly DC-10s to phl, ewr, bos and bdl, flight numbers in the 1980-1990 range signifying weekend only service.
