FLL Construction Update

Thu Jun 26, 2003 11:10 am

does anyone know the progress of the FLL construction? I know that ter. 1 is open on both concourses and that the new garage is complete.

1) how is the rental car garage? will it be used for spotting?
2) When are they going to repave 9L/27R will they use 13/? during this process?
3) Are they expanding the other runway over US1? When?
4) How are the roads around FLL, are they redoing them?

1. The new garage is under heavy and fast construction. The top level has been started "9", level "8" is about 75% done and level "7" is about 90%. the rest are 100% done. (Done meaning the superstructure). I'll look up the data to see what levels the car rental depots will be on. It should open in late "04"

2. The repaving of 9L/27R will take place in Sep of "04" 9L/27R will be closed for about 14 days if BCAD picks "Plan A" (The fastest plan) During this time 13/31 will be the main runway in operation. (Delta is going to be hit by this). During the 4 days that the "crossover" where 9R/27L and 13/31 need to be worked on. The only runway that will be open will be 9R/27L. This will in effect close the airport to all traffic, but Continental Connection, Chalks, AA Eagle, Bahamas Air, and GA traffic.

3. The 9R/27L extendion is on hold as of now, but is planed to still be started around mid 06-07.

4. All of the road work that is being done out side the airport is now done. The road work for the ramps leading to the upper and lower decks should be 100% done by the Winter travel season. All the roads are well marked giving plenty of time to let you know what lane you should be in. I have heard the some lanes will be "marked" to add even more ease.

Do you think that Comair or ASA can fly from ATL that route. if not, Delta will probably add flights from MCO and have passengers connect through there. good thing there are 3 south florida airports!!!

There is a lot of information in that statement, What part of it would you like more information?

9R/27L is only 5,276ft long, so I would think that any RJ's would have a tight run. (It's pretty hot here in September figure about 90degs) I'm sure someone else that reads this post can answer that better than I can at this time.

"2 or 3 years they were remodeling the Delta Terminal at FLL. What was the extent of that (aka what exactly did they do)"

Terminal 2 (Then called Terminal A) during it's refit, had it's ceilings raised 3ft and the rear hallway widened. This was because the Terminal had a very closed-in feeling. New bath rooms were installed. All new lighting was installed. Skylights were added in places. An all "Coral Rock" faceing was applyed inside the Concorse. New Blue&Black thached carpeting replaced the old Brown carpet. Light gray paint replaced the old Tan paint. And a new baggage handleing system.

USAFHummer,
"So all of the car rental agencies and lots that are currently off airport are going to be moved to an on airport site??? Or will some remain off campus..."

At this time only Avis, Budget, Dollar, and National are on the airport property.
Alamo, Enterprise, Herts, Royal, InterAmerican, and Thrifty are within 5 mins ride of the airport. All have counters and offer shuttle service.

Nono you missed the question here Sinlock...what I am asking is that when this new rental car garage opens, will the rental car agencies who have off airportlots/property move into the new garage or will they remain in their current spots and only the on airport agencies move there???

Is that was already remodeling with Delta terminal north now and I still hope will hear additional more expansion of new concourse A soon into the future and they need get more more passengers are coming in at FLL. I will looking forward to hear more news in the FLL and I will wait until new third parking garage will be opened in late 2004. The construction worker were very hard work at the airport. It was very quickly to do construction of the new 9th level garage.

USAFHummer,

At this time I don't have any information on who will be moving into the New garage. I would think that some of the on site car rental's will move in, Some will be displaced because of the location of where the new exit ramps will be.

Also, From the concept pictures I have, It looks like the Rental Car dealers will be located on the upper levels. One of the pictures shows some kind of large office type structure. If so I would not think there will be any spotting.

(NOTE: This is not FACT, It's just my interpretation of what I see in Concept photos) I'll try to get some hard info.

FLairport,

**(Delta is going to be hit by this)***

This is because some of Delta's heavyer 767 flights will most likely be weight limited because of the Runway length (6930ft) and high summer temp's.
