NEW YORK, June 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Delta Connection will offer customers convenient nonstop jet service between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and the cities of Nashville and St. Louis, effective Aug. 1. Delta Connection carrier Comair will operate one daily round-trip flight between New York JFK and each of these cities using the Bombardier CRJ regional jet.
"Convenient and direct access to and from New York is important to our customers, especially business customers," said Fred Buttrell, president and chief executive officer, Delta Connection Inc. "Our new service from Nashville and St. Louis also offers customers convenient access to a large selection of international flights at New York JFK on Delta and its SkyTeam partners."

Delta and Delta Connection customers at New York JFK have access to more than 38 international flights daily to 27 destinations operated by Delta, Delta Connection and Delta worldwide partners.

Known for its convenience, comfort and speed, the CRJ carries passengers in a two-by-two seating arrangement; every seat is an aisle or window, with no middle seats. The plane can cruise at a speed of 530 mph at altitudes as high as 41,000 feet and is recognized as the quietest commercial jet aircraft in the world.

Delta Connection carriers include Delta's wholly owned subsidiaries Atlantic Southeast Airlines and Comair, additional regional carriers Atlantic Coast Airlines, Chautauqua Airlines and SkyWest Airlines, and codeshare partner American Eagle (in California). It looks like this RJ will go ATL-STL-JFK-STL-ATL. So for STL this is an addition of 2 dialy deparutes.

Id love to see DL us RJs on say 6 trips a day to DFW and CRJ7s on 2 trips a day to SLC. I know, I know, they dont have any room to expand gate wise and that whole concourse they are in is totally full, isnt it?

At least I can dream. Im an air traffic controller and have a bid in to work at the tower (STL) and love working a really diverse airport.

It looks like DL is finally doing what it should have done long ago at JFK, adding more feeder traffic to cities with little or no JFK service, and thereby serving as a feeder for all international airlines at JFK. We are now seeing service to CMH, IND, STL, and BNA. Curiously, they have cut back on other services, like SFO, LAX, SAN, and others. I wish they would serve more upstate and New England towns with multiple flights, which could then feed both Song and Mainline flights.

Remember though that JFK is still slot controlled at in the late afternoon/early evening. This makes it hard for DL to add RJ flights to connect to the European flights.

However as slot controls are relaxed, I think you will see DL add more service to JFK. I hope that maybe if DL adds enough RJ feed, they can bring back a few int'l flights like JFK-DUB or JFK-MUC.

One thing that I don't see DL wanting is a large number of passengers connecting to Song. The goal is to keep Song as separate from DL as possible and keep Song mostly focused on point to point routes. If you start throwing a bunch of connecting passengers in there, it really mucks up the whole system. The only exception to this is int'l pax connecting to Song flights to go to Florida.

I don't think Delta has any problems with a large number of passengers connecting to Song. However, Song marketing is more targeted towards O&D passengers. Through Delta, though, you can book a routing with a Song flight. For instance, ATL-JFK-IST. The delta system would let you use a Song flight for a section of it.

Does AA serve STL-JFK, too? I would have thought they would have kept at least one STL-JFK flight from the TWA days. I am sure there were quite a few STL-JFK flights during the TWA era, probably with large jets, since it was a hub-to-hub connection.

It was not uncommon to see TWA 747's, L1011's, and 767's on the STL-JFK route over the years. It was one of their most popular routes.

I think AA still has a few STL-JFK flights, most likely with MD-80 aircraft now, although a 757 still could be a possibility.

AA still flies STL-JFK 2x daily, with MD80's.

I thought AA was flying three MD80s daily from STL to JFK?

The way things change and the fact I now have to open a timtable on my computure doesnt help. Id much rather read it in the old printed form.

Ironically, while DL will now fly from STL (an AA hub) to JFK, DL does not fly from DFW (a DL and AA hub) to JFK.

I wonder if/when DL will bring this flight back? According to Delta.com the flight comes back on January 1, 2004, but I know the schedules have not been set that far in advance.

Can the CRJ-700 do DFW-JFK? If so, that would be my guess as to how they might restart that route.

A CR7 could do DFW-JFK most likely.

AA Eagle flew DFW-BOI nonstop with a CR7 and that is 1272 miles...DFW-JFK is 1372 miles...and if I'm not mistaken, the range of the CR7 is 1500 miles+.

DFW-JFK still seems like a good MD-88 route though, as I'm sure it would still get its fare share of premium international connecting passengers.

Does DL consider JFK a hub? They have a lot of flights in and out of there.

"They have a lot of flights in and out of there"

Not really, LAX, SFO, MCO, FLL, TPA, BOS, ORD probably have more DL flights than JFK.

Not really, LAX, SFO, MCO, FLL, TPA, BOS, ORD probably have more DL flights than JFK.

JFK has more flights than ORD,SFO,LAX and TPA. But not quite as many as BOS,FLL or MCO which are all DL "focus" cities.

DL does consider JFK an Atlantic gateway and most of the domestic flights are timed to connect to the int'l flights.

DL's JFK schedule:
AMS 1x 763
AUA Sat Only 757
ATH 1x 763
ATL 9x (5 CRJ, 2 757 (Song), 2 763)
BWI 1x CRJ
BCN 1x 763
BOS 6x CRJ/FRJ
BRU 1x 763
ORD 1x CRJ
CVG 2x 763
CMH 1x ERJ
DTW 1x CRJ
FLL 5x 757 (Song)
FRA 1x 763
IND 1x ERJ
IST 1x 763
LAX 3x 763
LAS 1x 757 (Song) (starts Oct 1)
MAD 1x 763
MEX 1x 757
SVO 1x 763
BNA 1x CRJ (starts Aug 1)
NCE 1x 763
ORF 1x CRJ
MCO 4x 757 (Song)
CDG 2x 763 (2nd flight starts Jul 1)
PHL 1x FRJ
PHX 1x 757
PIT 1x CRJ
RDU 1x FRJ
FCO 1x 763
SLC 2x (763,757)
SFO 1x 763
SEA 1x 757
STL 1x CRJ (starts Aug 1)
TPA 3x 757 (Song)
YYZ 1x CRJ
VCE 1x 763
DCA 2x (MD88,FRJ)
PBI 2x 757 (Song)

I think a CR7 could fly DFW-JFK as DL will soon be flying DFW-OAK which is 1,492 miles (longer than DFW-JFK). However, I think it would be better to have mainline on this route...this is a route ideally suited for a 100 seat plane that DL needs to order.

A few updates to the JFK schedule starting Aug 1:
LAX will go to 2 757 and 1 763ER daily;
SFO will go from 1 763ER to 1 757 daily;
JFK-MXP will return but only 4X weekly (MoWeFrSu) 763ER
Second JFK-CDG (763ER) will return (currently not operating) but only 3X weekly (TuThSa)
