Cayman Islands Questions

Fri Jun 27, 2003 4:23 am

Hi,

I was checking out pictures of Grand Cayman (Georgetown) and noticed that there are quite some aircraft movements on their airport. So my question is how well the aviation is doing for the Cayman Islands. Are there charter flights with tourists going on cruise ships from the Cayman Islands? I know this happens in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Some airlines fly in tourists to San Juan who later go on cruise ships. Does this happen at the Cayman Islands as well? Looking at the small airport, I can imagine they cannot handle all the regular flights/charter flights and the Cayman Airways flights all at once. Do they handle airlines at separate peaks, for example Cayman Airways flights come in before the U.S. flights or the other way around? I also saw several photo's of a TACA ATR42, where do they fly to from the Cayman Islands? Does anybody have more information regarding the rumour of Cayman Airways leasing Boeing 737-700 to modernize their fleet?

There are no cruises originating or terminating in the Cayman Islands, however it is a very frequent stop for the cruise ships.

Part of the reason there are no cruises is because there is no cruise pier to dock at. Imagine the nightmare of loading people and supplies in a tender operation!

I flew down there a couple years ago on USairways. When the cruise ships unload their passengers in Georgetown it's a sight to see. The place is suddenly packed and it's time to move to the other side of the island. The airport had a thatched roof and a nice little outdoor viewing area that I took advantage of. At most I saw four or five 737's parked there but it really wasn't a very busy airfield.

Looking at the pictures there's certainly a good variety of airlines operating into Cayman Island. I heard Airtours and Monarch also used to operate charter flights to Cayman Island. Are their other European charter airlines that operate or operated to Cayman Island?

I use to work for a tour operator that did trips to the Caymens and we always used scheduled air where we had bought a block of seats as a charter was hard to fill, the hotels have set rates for tour operators and the profit margin leaves a lot to be desired. Also divers usually go hear and they tend to buy the air only and go for the cheap accommodations.
