PIE, St. Petersburg/Clearwater, FL

Fri Jun 27, 2003 11:52 am

Yes, the airport that sits in the shadow of TPA (the two airports are only a few miles from each other, separated by Tampa Bay) Currently this airport is served primarily by ATA, but a few Canadian charters use it during the Winter season. I am curious as to what airlines served the airport in the past. Air South served the airport for a while during the 1990s when it was in service. I know USAir Express had B-1900 flights to MCO for a short while.

PIE tried to lure Southwest into starting service from there instead of TPA, but failed due to a lack of jet loading bridges. Despite a complete renovation, the facility still lacks jetways! Passengers must still walk outside and board the planes using stairs.

I flew many times into PIE on PeoplExpress from EWR, I have many fond memories of going to see Grandma and Grandad in Newport Richie.

I love boarding aircraft with the stairs, and I also miss the old North Terminal at EWR (believe it or not). It had a nice observation lounge.

Canadian Airlines used to fly to PIE from YYZ, along with Royal and Canada 3000. Currently Air Transat flies there from YYZ and CanJet from YHZ.

American flew to PIE? Was it mainline or Eagle? I thought I heard that USAir mainline once served PIE-PIT before the merger with Piedmont.

Mainline! Yeah, for about a year back int he mid to late 80s. I BELIEVE the flight were to DFW. As for USAir, my gut feeling is no. My memory agrees w/ my gut. By the way, Pan Am III is SUPPOSEDLY coming back w/ flights to Puerto Rico.

Southeast Airlines flies ABE-PIE, and USA 3000 Airlines will start CLE-PIE in October.

I may take advantage of the USA 3000 flights, since my grandmother is still holding on down there near Tampa. God bless her heart.

Another long term and current user is UPS (Cargo) which serves PIE instead of TPA usually with 757's and occasionally DC-8-71's. There are normally 3 aircraft parked west of the passenger terminal during the day.

American Eagle flew to PIE with Saabs to MIA. Service lasted until the late 1990s ('98/'99).

Cody mentioned Northeastern, I would like to add some details.
QS served PIE for most of its existence from 1983-1985 primarily with 727's

and occasionally DC-8-62's and very rarely, at least twice A300's. I got to fly out once on the A300 (PIE-MSY) and the airstairs did not quite reach the door (widebodies were very rare at PIE then) and they had to add steps for us to reach the doors. QS served ISP/BDL/MSY/FLL and PBI from PIE

Another PIE carrier was Florida Express (FLEX) with BAC-111 service to their MCO hub. I believe they served TPA first, then moved to PIE, probably around 1985

And one more "unique" operator, Atlantic Gulf in the mid 1980's flying Vickers Viscounts to MIA. They had a great $10 walk up service charge pass for employees of any airline, and I remember my one flight MIA-PIE with them very fondly. Even though it was (I think) 1983 the 2 Flight attendants wore hot pants (left over from the 70's) and a rare chance to fly a Viscount in the US in the 80's.

In the 50's and 60's, Eastern offered nonstop service from PIE to east coast cities with Constellations, etc.

American offered MD-82 Service to RDU when that hub was open from PIE.

My mpm flew out of PIE only last month and I got to take her down to the airport to meet her flite. PIE is not that bad of an airport. She flew TZ and the nonstop to LAX left at 0625 so it was still dark outside. Otherwise From the coffeshop you can spot the runways and the gates. Also UPS had 2 757's there one in the new livery.

I am surprised that AA offered MD80 service to RDU! Milesrich, do you know how many flights per day they offered? I believe they had 3 flights from TPA to RDU during the RDU hub days. It seems like the majority of airlines that currently serve and have served PIE did not concurrently serve TPA. I am not sure if PeopleExpress also served TPA. Given the close proximity of PIE to TPA (about 10 miles, +/-), it wouldn't make sense in my mind for one carrier to serve both airports.

Actually, AA,Midway1, and CO served BOTH (Although in CO's case, it was through the PE merger. You can see which airport won the battle. Eastern served both , but as I stated earlier, that was back in the fifties and sixties, when it was not unusual for an airline to serve 2 nearby airports. I'm bored. I think I might head over there tommorrow.
