Martinair Adding Sri Lanka

Fri Jun 27, 2003 5:19 pm

The airline will be flying to Colombo from Amsterdam starting 05 November, the weekly service will operate via Sharjah using a 767-300. KLM used to ply the route via Karachi in the late 80's early 90's using a 747SUD, flight continued onawards to Sydney.

Great to see another carrier flying into Sri Lanka.

Don't forget that Air Lanka / SriLankan Airlines also used to fly into Amsterdam for quite some time but they pulled out in 2001.

Hi Airmale
As far as I know there is still a Lufthansa Cargo flight going to Colombo but I'm not pretty sure.

I know Martinair flew this route back in 2000 but it ended like a year later. And now Transavia fly a weekly 757 services. Does this mean Transavia are handing it over to Martinair?

On a seperate note, I was looking at amadeus and came across twice weely flights operated by Cyprus Airways Larnaca-Dubai-Colombo with A320s.
Does anyone know about this? I checked out the Cyrpus Airways web site and nothing is mentioned. Seems a very unusual route, I didnt think there was any traffic between the two countries, but I guess they could be aiming at transit traffic to/from the rest of Europe.

AFAIK Transavia does not fly to Colombo but to Kathmandu. This service will be taken over by Martinair end of 2003 starting with a 757 and after some weeks a 767.
Martinair took over the Colombo trip (and 2x757's) from Air Holland in 1999 when they ran (again) into problems.

Funny, I saw the same thing today in the CRS. I agree, I don't see a lot of traffic between Cyprus and Sri Lanka and I don't see Cyprus Airways going for Transit pax. They rather want to bring people into Cyprus it self then to Sri Lanka, quite weird.

Swissgabe, Gardermoen.. could it be a new service? Though it seems unlikely, who in Sri Lanka would want to go to Cyprus? With Martinair introducing new services to Colombo, whats the chance of airlines such as British Airways flying to Colombo? If I remember well, BA used to fly non-stop LHR-CMB back in 97 or so. Does anyone know what aircraft they used?

Zizou,

BA resumed services in 1995 with a twice weekly LGW-AUH-CMB DC10 service, this was upgraded to B777s flying LHR-DXB-CMB with completely different times, and then a season later it ended. The service was never non-stop.
I really cant see any signidficant market between Cyprus and Sri Lanka.
Swissgabe, do you think there could be a change of market focus by management at Cyrpus Airways with this new route? Seems like too long a route for an A320 as well!

Well, I don't know Cyprus very well but as I said, I fully agree that there won't be a big market between Cyprus and Sri Lanka. If I'm not mistaken, Cyprus never operated long-haul flights or never transported pax beyond Cyprus. Another reason could be, that Cyprus got traffic rights between DXB and CMB and could sell seats that way. I remember, that Lauda Air didn't get traffic rights on this sector.

And I don't think it will take very long to see BA back in CMB very soon. Beside KUL, CMB really should/could be a BA destination.

Airmale, try any date from November onwards, this is what I got.
TIMETABLE INFORMATION From Wednesday, November 26, 2003 To Wednesday, December 03, 2003
Timetable for flights from Larnaca (LCA), Larnaca, Cyprus to Katunayake (CMB), Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Flight Departing Arriving Stops /
Aircraft Duration Effective dates Operational days
Cyprus Airways
CY 396 Larnaca (LCA), Larnaca, Cyprus 08:00
Katunayake (CMB), Colombo, Sri Lanka 20:45
1 stop(s)
320 8h45min Tuesday
Friday

DXB-CMB seems a popular route for airlines, besides UL and EK, there is Czech Airlines, and now it appears Cyprus AIrways.

Swissgabe, Amadeus lists the Austrian/Lauda weekly DXB-CMB flight, so i presume they do have traffic rights then?

Right, if a flight is loaded an airline should be able to sell seats. Possible that they only have a reduced number of seats free for sale but I don't know the details about the OS(NG) traffic rights. Or maybe it's OK which doesn't have traffic rights, anyway. Weird to see CY flying into CMB. Will try next week to find out more details on this.

Interesting, it will be CY's first south and east Asian route, perhaps they're targetting travellers between DXB-CMB, alot airlines flew to Pakistan in the early 90's just for the KHI-DXB leg.

I know for sure OK do have rights, in fact they are just about to, or have already added a 3rd Prague-Dubai-Colombo A310 operation. They said they are seriously targetting the DXB/CMB market as well.

Well Martinair is a quite an old friend of Colombo. Their services date back to mid 1970's with DC-10s as far as I remember.

The reason why CY flies to DXB and CMB seems to be quite reasonable. Cyprus is more a Summer destinations and CY has spare equipment in the winter. So for this season they are targeting some transit passengers.

Flights are loaded till 05JUN04 (11 month in advance) but I don't know if they stop during summer. I mean Sri Lanka as Tourist destination does better in the winter and Cyprus better in the summer. Guess CY could use the planes in Summer to bring tourist into Cyprus.

Airmale
I don't think that it would be easy for CY to option landing rights into India. I wonder if there are at all agreements between India and Cyprus. Don't know about Pakistan. But students of course bring a low yield and you have to offer cheapest possible fares which won't cover cost. I mean flying from Europe to CMB with at least two stops has to be very cheap.
