Thiefs "broke Into" An Icelandair 757 At CPH

Fri Jun 27, 2003 10:16 pm

The night before last wednesday, thiefs cut their way through a wire fence at Copenhagen Airport (CPH, Kastrup) and "broke into" an unlocked Icelandair 757 jet which was parked at a remote spot at the airport for the night. The thiefs were caught on the spot after they had raided the aircrafts Saga Boutique carts, taking perfumes and other things. The aircrafts at Kastrup usually arent locked because flight engineers and others are often working on them.

I can think of only one large aircraft I have ever seen with locks on the cargo compartment.

That was the IL-62.

Again, this is a pretty shoddy security lapse. If they can get on for stealing, then they can get on to leave a bomb or anything else behind

They didn't steal the stuff from the cargo compartment - they entered the plane itself (or so I gather).

Artysman,

You say:

"Again, this is a pretty shoddy security lapse. If they can get on for stealing, then they can get on to leave a bomb or anything else behind"

Please read this paragraph from the original post:

"The thiefs were caught on the spot after they had raided the aircrafts Saga Boutique carts, taking perfumes and other things"

So what's the shoddy security lapse in that? Who can prevent anyone, anywhere from cutting through the fence. Despite that plane were parked at a remote stand, and I tell you, some parts of CPH can be pretty remote. They were caught on site, by security!

That's good security in my book.

The thieves shouldn't have gotten through the fences in the first place

As with the poster above, the thieves shouldn't have gotten in there in the first place.

Obviously, it is a tremendous security lapse. If it possible to get in, it is possible to get out, although that didn't happen in this case. And if you can gat in, you can bring along anything you want, explosives for example.

Perhaps we need to ask ourselves some serious questions if a thief would choose to steal purfume, etc. from an aircraft as opposed to a retail store!

Nevertheless, they were caught and that is good. What are we going to do? Install prison fences around all airports with electrical razorwire?

I remember years ago, some people pulled a stunt of breaking into a BA 747 in LHR, and making a video of them inside the 747...

Anyway, it can happen anywhere... they were caught at least. Probably thanks to Video Camera Surveillance. You can't stop people from breaking into an airport from the fence, but you must be able to see them and stop them as soon as you can.

Sydney for example, you can break in through many ways from the fence, and hop along to an aircraft... Even Singapore, there are ways to get in... LGW too... There are many examples...

Security patrols, electrified wiring etc are just there for deterrence! Some airports test their security by actually hiring someone to break in and see how fast their security can get them!

Airports in the CIS have these really ugly Plastic Gates that you can't see or cut through (Sheremetjevo,Boryspil)

I agree with the above posts. If they could get in then that's a pretty bad security lapse. This kind of thing has happened quite a few times here in Oz, only GA aircraft were the target not airliners. We have had cases of PA31's being broken into, started and taxied, crashing into other planes along the way, C-150 being stolen from the apron and then crashed onto a main road etc. Imagine if these guys had managed to start the engines of the 757 up and then taxied it around the airport, the damage would be horrendous!

I wouldn't exactly consider a PA31 that difficult to break in to....
