Longest Delay To A Flight Ever?

Sat Jun 28, 2003 2:43 am

I was just looking at the arrivals at Manchester (MAN) and not suprisingly PIA are running late on one of their flights, PK709 from Lahore is delayed by two days and is due at 1600 on sunday! How on earth can an airline let something like this happen, i'd love to know the reasons behind this delay. Anyway does anyone know of any other really long delays, like more than 2 days? Even for PIA that is suprising.

Regards

I've had a 78 hour delay on an Air India flight once. Mechanical problems.

I've had a more than 3 days delay flying from Omsk (Siberia) to Moscow because of weather conditions. Finally we took a train that took us another two days to arrive to Moscow...

If it as a wheater delay, there is not much PIA can do about it. At least PIA didn't cancel the flight, as US carriers typically do. NW has left me stranded in Minneapolis snowstorms plenty of times. And they don't delay, they just cancel, so that you may hope that there are seats available on other flights, days later.

Hmmm, i just thought that maybe it was delayed due to the monsoon season in that area? But having just checked the weather in Lahore its 36C and clear skies, same for the next 5 days aswell. I'd imagine its a technical fault, PIA's 747's seem heavily utilised so i'd guess they just have to fix as a standby aircraft cannot be found.

After SARS hit, China Southern kept selling tickets for their daily flights to the LAX, but would only fly 2 or 3 times per week. Great strategy, sell the tickets, contact the passengers before the flight, tell them it was cancelled, but they have put you on another in 2 or 3 days.

A U.S. carrier cancels a flight due to weather and reschedules you "days later". An international airline delays a flight for 78 hours due to weather.

What, may I ask, is the difference? With a U.S. airline there is at least the chance of flying standby sooner than 78 hours later.

It took the PAX on UA862 SYD-SFO slightly longer than 14 hours to get to their destination oneday in May 2002, the aircraft a 747-400 carrying over 250pax hit severe turbulance over the pacific near Fiji, instead of diverting to Fiji they diverted to Auckland due to AKL having better emergency facilities.

The next day the pax were told that they were on a different aircraft, as they taxied for takeoff the pilot noticed something not normal in the cockpit and returned to the terminal, some pax noticed that they were on the aircraft due to things being broken. The next day a replacement aircraft was brought in, from what I remember hearing this aircraft managed to breakdown in AKL aswell leaving pax stranded again so this was now 2 days after they had left SYD they had got as far as AKL, think it was the third day when they finally left AKL on the replacment aircraft that broke down the previous day. I think thast how it went, about a 3 day delay.

I never got to see it but there were 3 UA 744's in AKL at once, the third one was the usual AKL service which at the time was still a 744!

I flew Ghana Airways Bamako-Accra last month - 30 hours delay. And that's still not as bad as many of theirs.

Well, the longest delay I have noticed before..

Lufthansa A340-300 D-AIGM, was delayed for 2 days at Seoul Incheon Airport..
That was the only time I saw two Lufthansa A340s at once, outside Europe!

All kinds of flights experienced these kind of delays on 9/11/01.

Nigeria Airwyas, Feb., 1994. LHR-LOS delayed 81 hours for no apparent reason. We had to put ourselves up in a hotel for 3 nights, and were asked to report to the Nigeria Airways counter each afternoon for updates on when we would actually depart. The only problem was that we would show up, but no one from Nigeria Airways would be there!

When we finally did leave, it was on an increbibly old A310 with no meal service.
