What Is The Oldest Plane You've Flown On?

Sat Jun 28, 2003 8:15 pm

The oldest plane I have a record of flying on, is a BMA DC-9 regestration G-ELDG.

It was delivered to Austrian Airlines on 20/12/71. Nowadays it is registered to Air Tran. Don't know if it is still operational though.

I've probably flown older planes, including a BMA Viscount, but I didn't record their registration.

The newest plane I've flown on is an Air 2000 757 registration G-OOBC. It's first flight was on 17th February 2003.

What is the oldest and newest planes you have flown on?

Are they both still in service?

The oldest plane is my log book is my flying club's 38 year old PA28-140.

Airliner wise, the odest is probably a Ryanair 732, some of those dating back to the early 80's. If flew ATR42 HR-IAX last year which made its first flight in 85. However, as I shall be on one of the BA Concordes later this summer, this will become my oldest jet as the newest ones are 22+ years old and the oldest nearer 27.

Newest it was BA 777 G-YMMH which had just 15 flights in her log book when I flew her London-Chicago in December 2000.

In 1981 I flew on A Convair from Grand Cayman to Tampa that must have been 30 years old plus. In 2000 flew as US air 727 DCA-LGA again a well run-in machine, some of Ryanair's 737-200s have seen better days -not sure exactly how old, also flew G-BOAB in 1999 she must have been in her mid 20's

In 1987 I flew a Continental 747-200 from AKL to HNL, I guess that aircraft was atleast 15 years old, not that old really by 747 standards or for any commercial aircraft these days. Would have been an ex QF aircraft probably.

This is the oldest that I remember the registration of. I flew on many LH 737-200s and 727-200s in the early 90's, not sure if some of them were delivered prior to 1968?

And for the newest, last April I flew on Tyrolean's Dash 8-400 OE-LGG, delivered on Jan. 9th, 2003:

N987VJ is currently stored at Mojave, while OE-LGG is obviously still in service  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I've flown on some DC-3s in scheduled service with Air Kenya back in the 80s, so I guess those would take the cake.

In terms of modern jets, it would have to be Northwest's venerated N930RC, a DC9-14 that was delivered to Finnair back in January of 1966 and that I last flew sometime in mid-2001.

As far as young planes go, I was on the first commercial service of N435SW, a Skywest CRJ. Can't get much younger than that.

I got you all beat. When I was a little kid, I flew on an Island Airways Ford Trimotor that was built in the 1920s. I flew it out of Sandusky Ohio. I believe this plane is in a museum now.

The oldest plane i've ever been on was a 1968 model Cessna 210 and it really did show its age. Oldest airliner would be an AA DC10-30 followed by an Ansett 767-200(1981 build date).

This aircraft, from this airport, 3 months before this photo was taken.
The charter in June 1984 took us over London and LHR, before returning to LTN.
I guess the aircraft was 40 years old at that time.

It was spring of 1967, I was not quite 2 years old. An Ozark Airlines DC-3 from PIA-STL. Most if not all of OZ's DC-3's were made before WWII, so it was more than likely at least 25 years old then.
Next up: STL-CVG-MKE-MSP-STL.

The oldest aircraft I have ever flown on is the DC-3. It was a domestic flight within South Africa from Skukuza to Johannesburg. I was coming back from a Safari on Comair, a domestic South African airline. It was indeed the only non pressurized flight I ever had, I remember very well each windows that had only one glass layer instead of two like on a modern airliner. That was 1986.

The oldest JETliner I have ever flown on is the Boeing 707, in 1985. I was flying back to Brussels from Rhodos (Greece) on TEA, a Belgian charter airline that doesn't exist anymore.

Also my first experience flying a taildragger. I had a little detour to the grass along the side of the runway on my first attempt (hey, cut me a break, the runway is only 45 feet wide!)

As a child I never recorded the numbers etc. of the planes I flew on (despite remembering the types) so I do not know the ages of the 707s, DC8s etc that I flew on back then. In recent times the oldest plane I have flown on is the BWIA TriStar 9Y-THA, which dates from 1980 and the newest are the BWee Express Dash 8s which were delivered in 1999 and which I flew on in 2000 and 2001. The Tobago Express Dash 8 Q300 9Y-WIZ was delivered in 2001 and I flew on that in that year itself - but I am not sure if it were brand new or came from another airline.

My oldest plane was an AirTran DC-9-30 series, one of the early -31 or -32 series, it had a 1967 manufacture date on it plaque inside the door. As for newest, one of AirTran's 717s, ship 703, I flew on it about 10 days after it entered service.

Back in 1989 my family got stuck in Anchorage just before Christmas due to the volcano Mt. Redoubt erupting and grounding a lot of flights because of the ash. So my family charted a DC-3 (not the one in the picture, a different one with a babe painted on the nose and everything) out of Fairbanks and home to Sitka via Whitehorse, Yukon.

I'm thinking the CAF's Heinkel HE-111 and Junkers Ju52 although I'd have to find my log books to check dates of manufacture to compare w/ Island Airways(?) Ford Tri Motor. Nothing like the newer C&S Connies and PAA Stratocruisers, though...Jack
