This weekend I visited DTW to pick up some friends on our way to a vacation in a further city. Just some quick comments and questions for our Detroit forum members.
The access is very good from both I-94 and I-275. However...recirculation within the airport is terrible. The Wayne County traffic brownshirts won't let you so much as slow down unless your pax are right at the curb, so I had to recirculate while waiting for friends to emerge at the Smith terminal.
---Wayne County ought to construct a ramp to allow Smith terminal recirculation without going up the access road and sitting in a one-lane u-turn lane. It was congested at 3:30 in the afternoon, well before rush hour.
---Also, a ramp is needed to allow one to drive from Smith to McNamara and the Eureka Road/ I-275 exit without having to go through that same stupid intersection!
The Smith terminal is looking really tired and worn. Sorry that the replacement is being delayed. McNamara looks very impressive on approach and drive-by; both of my friends arived at Smith so I didn't get to visit McNamara.
A Northwest 744 took off right over our heads while we were on Eureka road--nothing like the sight of a 744 with bending fuel-laden wings roaring into the sky!
