United Express Takes On Add'l Mesa Jets

Wed Jul 02, 2003 12:27 am

Mesa and United have agreed to up to 60 RJs, with the firm deal for 20 CRJ-700s and 15 CRJ-200s.

By 2005, the United Express system will have these aircraft.

50 CRJ-700s (30 SkyWest, 20 Mesa)
309 CRJ-200 (105 Air Wisconsin, 55 SkyWest, 134 Atlantic Coast, 15 Mesa)
17 BAe136 (Replacements TBD)

The total RJ fleet will be 376.

This is a significant ramp-up in UAX operations.

FYI.

So is UA just doing away with that plan that united announced months ago to add Q200s from MESA at the DEN hub?

How would the total RJ count of 376 compare to the RJ counts of the other US Majors?

UAL is way behind the other majors in RJ's due to the very restrictive ALPA contract. That contract was renegotiated to allow for a signifigant ramp up of RJ's during the chapter 11 negotiations.

he main sticking point now with Rj's is the ACA contract.

I was curious about United's scope clause on RJ operations. I see that Mesa will operate the CRJ 700 for UAL but how about the CRJ 900 series. With the up and coming low cost competition that UAL is encountering from Frontier at its Denver hub the CRJ 900 seems to make the most sense. It can carry more passengers for a small increase in costs. I believe that America West has found this out as they operate their RJ's in Phoenix, America's largest low fare base. They (Mesa) have transferred some 50 seaters out East (USAirways system) in favor of larger 700 and 900 series. So is an express carrier currently banned from operating RJs with more than 70 seats? Or if not could we see additional larger RJ's in Denver or elsewhere in the UAL express system?

This new undercut the rest of the regionals sweat shop we'll fly these jets for practically nothing because we're spineless Mesa pilots deal, is in addition to the 10 dashes they'll fly for UA at DEN.

TO answer the question about scope - each airline has a different scope clause with their regional affiliates. UA's have recently been renegotiated in their bankruptcy filings. So time will tell where those 70 seaters will be flown.

What's a BAe136? Should it be a BAe146 instead.

With the new contracts for the UAL pilots they are losing pilots at an alarming rate. I would love to know how they can justify laying off 60 pilots a month until the end of the year. I have heard that number by many pilots, they have reached I believe 1998 seniority.

Does anybody know if skywest has any 70 seat RJ'S? and if not are they planning on getting some? or AWAC or ACA?

I know AWAC doesnt have any 70 seaters but are they planning to buy any?

Are any of Mesa's 10 Dash 8's in that are used for UA Express in the UA livery? And if so does anyone have a picture?
