Remembering An Old JFK Incident.

Wed Jul 02, 2003 1:23 pm

I seem to remember, back inthe late 70's or early 80's, that a 747 skidded off a runway at JFK and came to rest within meters of Rockaway Blvd.

I searched online and found no mention of this. But I vaguely seem to recall driving past the 47's nose as we drove east on Rockaway.

Am I remembering correctly? Help?

It would have been at the north (upper part of photo) end of these runways.

You may be thinking of the SAS DC-10 that over-ran runway 4 Right in 1984.

Was it the TWA L-1011 in 1992 (N11002)? Immediately after liftoff, the stick shaker activated (false stall warning). The takeoff was aborted but the aircraft ran off the runway and caught fire.

First, isn't Rockaway Blvd a north/south road? :-p

But I know what Mirrodie is talking about. I mean, I wasn't really born yet, but I heard about this too. I dont know the plane, i could have been something already mentioned though.

I remember the Tower Air one. Wasn't that. That was weak anyway. lol

A little bit off topic, but talking about SAS did they fly to Caracas, Venezuela in the past? I remember something like that or am I mistaken?

I searched through some thorough databases: NTSB, as well as others ... I couldn't find any such incident involving a 747 @ JFK during the time period you mentioned.

In the back of my mind, there seems to be something about a DC-8 stretch that overran the runway in the early 70's....maybe that is it?
