Plane Crashes

Thu Jul 03, 2003 10:13 am

I had my grandparents, aunt, two cousins killed in 1993 on Iran Air Tours TU-154 flying from Tehran to Northeast Iran.. Apparently it collided with a Russian-made fighter jet upon take off.. Approx. 135 die. 20 couples were on their honeymoon... Anyone experience losing love ones to plane crashes?

Not loved ones, per se, but some very dear friends and co-workers were lost on Air Florida 90.

I knew a few guys on a CAP Cessna 182 doing pipeline patrols when it crashed. Eerie.

My dad also is friends with a brother-in-law of one of the Columbia astronauts...

I have an Air Force plane crash to credit for my existence. My mom was married to a Lt who died in an F-4 crash; then she met my dad and then I was born.

I've had a close friend of the family killed in a C180 crash.

A husband and wife from my hometown were killed in the Galaxy Airlines crash which happened in Reno, NV in January of 1985. The plane was a Lockheed Electra.

He was a prominent businessman (car dealer) and they were both very well known in the small town of Ortonville, MN which only has a population of 2,500 people. It's a big event when someone is killed like that in such a small town.

I was 15 at the time so I remember it very well. Their son was a year older than me in school.

It's quite a while ago but a very tragic accident was the crash of Swissair's Caravelle HB-ICV on 4th September 1963 when approx. 40 passengers from the 80 killed were couples from one single village. The aircraft was on a flight ZRH-GVA-FCO and these passengers wanted to go to an agricultural fair in GVA. Lots of orphans were the result...

Came close to it myself and with 2 friends once. The only one i know of who was actually killed in a crash was a PA-31 pilot whom was sitting in the testing room with me whilst doing an exam. He was a few rows up from where i was sitting. A few days later he was killed along with 7 others when the Chieftain he was piloting suffered a double engine failure and ditched into the sea.

My cousin was on the Eastern L1011 that went down in the Florida Everglades. He died but his wife survived. I also knew a woman who was a close friend of my aunts that was on the AA 757 that flew into the Pentagon on 9/11.

Ironically, a couple of my neighbors died in that crash too. They were from Edina. And the husband was a car dealer as well. Left their two daughters who were aged like 10 and 12 at the time.

Not strictly friends, but a couple of people I knew from the flying club took off in a C172 which crashed killing them both. They had a young daughter who stayed behind - quite sad really.

Somewhere I once worked had a customer based in WTC on 9/11...we got an email from them on the day of the attacks saying that they were stuck in the building and the only communication they had with the outside world was email - so did we know what was going on. We didn't hear any more from them...

Lots of stories here. Looks like the odds of dying in a plane crash aren't as remote as some of us would like to believe.

I was very lucky November 2001, when HB-IXM crashed short rwy 28 on the 24th. I had two weeks off, and was visiting my girlfriend in Berlin. I was booked on that flight, but decided to fly one day earlier due to a party on saturday evening from a close friend. When I actually find out what happened, I couldnt believe it .... , I still cant believe it ...... , it seems that I just have crossed that out in my brain, that I should have gone one day later.

I lost a very close friend on the 9/11 in the WTC, he used to work for the same investment bank than me .... , he had a telephone conference in the morning, whith a lot of people watching from the EU countries ... , suddenly they stopped the confernce ..... , the rest is history ... , his girlfriend gave birth to a nice girl two months later ........

considering the number of people flying, even if everyone on a.net were to have lost someone in an aircraft crash it would still not be anywhere near the high risk you want to portray flying to be.

If it were, there would be several thousand dead in aircraft crashes every day in the US alone...

My roommate from A&P school died while flying a Cessna P210 into Marathon, Florida in April of '96.

Also, I knew the captain who died in Feb of '95 while attempting to three-engine ferry a DC-8 out of MCI.

I also worked with a guy who was supposed to jumpseat on another DC-8 that crashed outside of Toledo in Feb. '92, but didn't make it on the flight. Everyone on board was killed. That had to shake him up pretty badly...

Jhooper,

Lots of stories here. Looks like the odds of dying in a plane crash aren't as remote as some of us would like to believe.

Don't forget that most of us here either work in the aviation industry or know people closely who do, and therefore are a lot more involved than many people.

Surely that puts up the odds of knowing someone involved in an accident as they are naturally at a higher risk.

A distant relative of mine died along with 2 passengers (his daughter and his daugters best friend) when the Baron he was piloting crashed in California. I believe in 1993? A terrible tragedy that was caused by the electric powered elevator malfunctioning and locking in the down position. Especially tragic that the 2 girls were just starting college. I had just seen them two months earlier at a wedding.

A friend of mine was hit by a plane and died. He happened to be on the 101st floor of Tower 1 when the AA767 hit.

A firefighter friend of mine died in the collapse of Tower 2.

My good friends brother was killed crop dusting in Panhandle, TX in 2000.

When my friend was taxiing back after spreading the ashes, a 172 starts rolling. Suddenly it pitches up hard, stalls, rolls, and nails the ground. It tumbles wing to wing into a few other airplanes, right in front of him. He shut down, grabbed the extinguisher, and ran to help. The guy wound up okay.

Apparently, the holes in the seat rails became so worn, the seat slid all the way back, with his hand still grabbing the yoke.

Not a pleasant few weeks I'd imagine.

My stepfather got stuck in traffic on the way to FLL in 1985 and, as a result, missed his flight to DFW on Delta 191. One of his business partners got on the plane, however, and was killed.

My stepfather's seat would have been in first class, which struck the water tanks first, and he almost certainly would have been killed as well. He was in shock for several months afterwards, although we were certainly thankful.

My mother was scheduled to be on TWA 800. She got sick from Lyme disease and her doctor advised her wait overnight for Lab results before going to France. We all know the rest of the story.

She flew on TWA 800 the next day- very eerie and quiet ride as the FA's/ and pilots lost a lot friends. She still has the ticket stub from the original flight in her desk.

Was the first time she had been sick in over 10 years. Unfortunately, a couple of her close friends were on board.

I lost my cousin and his wife in the TU154 ALA-AER flight crash in the summer of 1980 (does anybody know these codes here?). The a/c (a new property of the Kazakh branch of Aeroflot) was virtually brand new and was going to be sent, upon return from AER, to SVO to help with the increased load of foreign passengers coming to the 1980 Moscow Olympics. It exploded at the take-off at ALA in the predawn skies. Ironically, another our cousin, who was a trainee at an officer military facility located next to the airport, was among the first who were sent to the burning field for rescue operations. One needed pretty strong nerves to be able to listen what he was telling afterwards. He did not have an idea at that time that the whole event had much closer relation to him that he might have thought.

A family friend's brother died in the PSA 727 over SAN that collided with the Cessna. It happened before I was born but my dad knew him.

Also knew somebody that was supposed to be on TWA800. They were continuing on to Athens for a choir trip. The choir group ended up cancelling days before the crash.
