Illegal Flying Under Scottish Bridges

Sat Jul 05, 2003 6:46 am

Quite apart from the obvious dangers in actually doing the sort of things described below, is it smart to do odd or silly things with an aircraft in today's security environment?

Good God! Try something like that around New York City or Washington, D.C. and you're liable to have a hail of gunfire or worse, an air-to-air missile from an F-15 or F-16 directed at you if you don't respond to a radio hail quickly enough? What are some of these people thinking?  Wow!

Morons.

"There is no doubt that activities like this are dangerous and are to be firmly discouraged. We would advise pilots not to carry out such a hazardous manoeuvre."

Not really much to add there.

BTW, I watched a helicopter fly under the Golden Gate Bridge in 1997, when I was standing on said bridge.

The rules in the UK are:

No aircraft can be flown within 500ft of any Person, Vehicle, Vessel or Structure, and not below 1500ft of a built up area (and in practice that means even the tiniest villages or random groups of houses).

The exception is if the low-flying is done for normal aviation operations, such as landings or takeoffs.

Either way, flying UNDER a bridge is 100% illegal.

What's the big deal? If they crash all they'll do kill is themselves and a bunch of Larch trees.
