Finnair At Manchester

Mon Jul 07, 2003 2:52 pm

Hi

It was with some surprise that after searching for "Finnair", the search engine threw up photos of their A319s at MAN. I did not expect that such a carrier would fly to Manchester. Does anyone local to that airport know how loads on the MAN-HEL route are like?

Why would AY fly to MAN? It just seems an odd route for Manchester. Maybe Finland is popular with tourists, or is it a business route?

They fly to Manchester 12x a week. On business days they operate a MAN-HEL service, and they also have a daily MAN-ARN service. All currently operate with an MD-82, though they will start replacing those with a mix of 320s and 319s in August.

MAN is one of the largest airports in Britain aswell as an important region, so I do'nt find it strange that Finnair fly to MAN. I guess they have som transit passengers from Asia via HEL too! Connections via HEL to Asia are quick!

Why is that a weird route?
On a similar note, Finnair have 2? 757s based at MAN during the summer operating for Air Scandic, and also have 1 based at NCL operating for Air Scandic as well.

Sorry, should have been more specific. Living in London, one doesn't really appreciate the importance of other cities in Britain. I guess this is a case of another Londoner thinking that no one lives up North.

Just kidding, not really. I guess I'm just surprised (perhaps I shouldn't be) that Finnair operates a service to MAN. More specifically, I really would like to know loads, and what type of pax use this service i.e. is it predominantly businessmen or a mix?

thanks

I would probably think there is a mix of businessmen and tourists.

Around 7.000 passengers per month use the service. In April 2003, just under 7,000 passengers were carried on the 104 flights (66 per flight, about 45% loads). It was begun in 1994 as a daily service but can't remember when they increased it to 12 weekly (1998 or so?). The flights are codeshared with BAand AA,with some BA Scottish routes also carrying the AYcode.

For years Finnair (or rather Kar Air) operated weekly DC9/Se210 charter services in the summer, plus we had Kar Air's swing-tail DC6 operating cargo flights until the early 1980s, which were then replaed by Finnair Dc9s.
