EasyJet Load Factor Falls 0.8% To 85.8%

Mon Jul 07, 2003 4:27 pm

"These figures are in line with our own expectations. We are pleased with easyJet's June performance, given the events that have adversely affected the airline market recently. These results demonstrate, for both business and leisure customers, the continuing attractiveness of our fare structures and the airports selected for our network," said EasyJet CEO Ray Webster.

EasyJet carried 1 751 860 passengers - up 92.7% on 2002 when EasyJet was not merged with Go.
Load factor fell 0.8% to 85.8%.

For the year to 30 June 2003, EasyJet carried 18 939 545 passengers at a load factor of 83.9%.

Good results when compared to Ryanairs results earlier last week. I note that Ryanair are continuing their web discounts through July - very worrying indeed. The next six to eight weeks is the high profit period for all airlines in Europe.

Although with Ryanair, you never know anymore what is the normal fare, so is £25 off actually a discount or not? - especially considering that STN - PIK is normally advertised as £8 return.

First we had the 'Internet-Bubble', here comes the 'Low-Fare-Bubble'.

I doubt it. I don't think a few % points here or there spells the doom of low-cost carriers, just a reflection of tougher competition from the likes of BA. I do expect much more consolidation though, and doubt that all of the low-cost airlines around today will last - to that extent, yes maybe the 'bubble' will burst, but Ryanair and easyjet have generally been posting good or excellent profits, unlike the IT companies that were only valuable on paper.

This is what people have wanted for years, and finally they are getting it, so I don't think easyjet and Ryanair are about to disappear. However, I do think easyjet will have its work cut out given its much higher fare structure, when compared to that at Ryanair.

Incidentally, I don't think the fact that Ryanair's current fare deals mean they are in trouble at all. I work at STN, and I can guarantee you those desks are chock-a-block every day from 0400. They seem to be doing extremely well; the offers are there because Ryanair can afford them, and because they work, in terms of bums on seats. Right now, fares for most cities on Ryanair's network for the next 2 weeks are higher then usual - and that's because our planes are running on full capacity at the moment, contrary to what some of you may believe!
