Delta MD-11 Retirement

Delta was one of the few US carriers to hang on to the MD-11 for this long. What do you think about Delta's decision to retire them soon?

Personally, I have nothing against the MD-11. I got to fly on it once from LAX to ATL and I loved every minute of the flight. The problem is really commonality with the rest of the fleet, as well as having 3 engines. 777's can do the MD-11 flights with pretty much the same capacity and burn less fuel...big benefit these days. The MD-11 is really a beautiful aircraft, but it never really found a niche...well, except for the MD-11 freighters, they seem to be successful.

With the NW/CO/DL alliance, NW should soon start a 747-400 on the ATL-NRT route in co-op with DL.

Starting July (15, I believe) DL will put its two-letter code on NW flights to NRT from JFK, SEA and LAX. I'm sure the DL code will also be on the (proposed) NW flight from ATL to NRT.

Where did you hear this? Actually I would think NW would simply put its code on the existing DL service. Further I don't think Delta pilots would really want to see NWA pilots pick up that kind of flying at their expense.

I thought the code share does not allow code sharing of flights that only involve flight between hubs, so no ATL - NRT, tho ATL - NRT - SEL would be allowed.

How many MD11s do they have left at the moment? I flew through ATL last night, and saw 3 parked side by side at their maintenance facility.
I've flown on 9V-SPK.

The current codeshare agreement with the DOT doesn't allow for international routes if I'm not mistaken.

...not that that will stop them.

DL is already applying its code to NW's NRT flights from DTW/SEA/SFO/JFK  Big grin

We cannot jump into a route that DL or CO is currently operating and have them stop there flight at the same time. We still have to "compete" with each other. It will mainly be a code share thing for DL for ASIA..they will eventually be able to codeshare on just about all of our Asia flights like CO does right now...In turn we will be able to put NW on their flights to S America and parts of Europe. It really is a beautiful thing for DL frequent flyers or NW frequent flyers. Sharing lounges, miles and a route network than go just about anywhere. And on the business side of the house, it fills any possible empty seats. Everyone is happy..except UA and AA!!

Actually, the reason why DL still ops M11s because it needs three 772ER aircraft to be outfitted with overhead crew rest facilities; then insured for transpac ops. That wont be completed until the turn of the year.

I have only flown on a MD11 twice. I disliked it because I flew with Martin air. I disliked the airline because there was not one inch of leg room,terrible in flight service, hard seats, bad food and bad movies. I wish to fly on a a better MD11. DL Is a very good airline and I have enjoyed my flight to MCO from lax on a L1011 airplane that no longer exists.

What?? I thought DL was going to run their on 777-200 ATL-NRT.
-UN Is there enough traffic for two different carriers.

I have not heard when Delta is retiring their MD-11s, but like someone else asked, how many do they still have? Didn't UPS buy some from Delta? As far as an aircraft, the MD-11 is great. I flew on one with American several years a go and it was a very nice plane. Recently, I have made several trips on MD-11s operated by World Airways. Great airplane!

I flew DAL MD11's for a year and I think the MD11 is an inferior aircraft in most respects. DAL has chosen to retire its fleet in order to reduce the number of aircraft fleets it operates. DAL currently is scheduling only the ATL-NRT trips with the MD11's (ships 801,802 and ?) and is also filling in a few military charters with spare MD11's that have not been sent to the desert. The 777's are scheduled to take over NRT by Jan, 04. A staffing bid will come out this month to displace all remaining MD11 pilots to other equipment. 1 DAL MD11 has been leased to World Airways and World does all its pilot training at the DAL training facility. If passenger demand were to dramatically increase, DAL has stated that it could bring the MD11's back.

As I have heard the third ship is 804.
Sad enough, I really wanted to see 813, (the only one with the newest c/s) to fly a little bit longer.

But certainly not in their former number, especially since they only owned half of them.

Would it not make more sense for DL to expedite the delivery of their remaining 772ERs than try to reestablish the M11???
