As reported by the YSSY Message Board

On 7 July 2003, a Singapore Airlines Pte Limited Boeing 747-400 MEGATOP 9V-SPF was hit by a Qantas Catering truck and engineering inspections deemed the aircraft unfit to fly.

According to 9V-SPK's father's contact

Estimated at US$1 000 000 in damages caused, the aircraft could be on the ground for about 10 days.

More information at the YSSY Message Board webpage and kudos and thanks to 9V-SPK

Haha, the report sounded a little dramatic to me.

Is it just me or are these ground collisions occurring a little to frequently for comfort? Could it be that when airport ground handling companies reduce their staff strength, their drivers are under more pressure?

It does not take much damage to an airplane to ring up a $1 million bill.

Probably a few thousand at most (Aussie dollars of course).

And indeed such things happen ever more often.

Partly it's overworked crew who are on too tight a schedule driving too fast and making mistakes.
Partly it's probably inexperience and carelessness of young underpaid (compared to other airline staff) workers.
And in part it's just plain old bad luck. It probably doesn't happen a lot more often than in the past but because of the ever increasing access to information you hear about it more often.
I wish I were flying

Saw the plane parked at Qantas Hangars today on my way back home.

Didn't see how serous the damage was but the damage of the plane has not yet been repaired for sure.

Probably another 5 days I'd say.

Best Regards
