Frontier, Come To EUG!

Fri Jul 11, 2003 3:25 pm

As most of you know I'm in Eugene, OR (EUG). Well anyways, we currently have Horizon Air, America West Express (MESA) and United Express/ Skywest and Air Wisconsin. Up until December 28 or something,UA flew Mainline aircraft in here, and at one time operated 737s and 727s to DEN. Now they are just CRJs. But this college town needs an additional airline. Despite the fact that roughly 51% of our residents annually fly out of PDX, I think Frontier might do somewhat well out of here. Although most of our traffic supply is headed South, there is a Eastern market. Pre September 11th, Frontier had been talking about launching services to EUG, as well as "WinAir," however non of this went through. Well I really wish Frontier would come to Eugene, these regionals need some competition! But I am exited that soon AWE will be operating their CR7 to Eugene, along side QX's three daily CR7 flights to LAX. So what do you guys think? Could Frontier make it out here. Honestly, I'm not sure if they could right now, but in a year or so I really hope to see them flying here!

If F9 they ever come here, it would most likely be a connection to DEN, and UAX already has that. (did they discontinue it like the rumors a while ago said?)

If they EVER decided to connect EUG to SFO/OAK, well the price gap between what is is reasonable and what UA charges is HUGE. I'd make sure to drum up maximum support for them to anyone I know who flies home to NorCal.

I part of the 51% that goes up to PDX to get home to the bay area. Drive sucks, got to park car at friends house, etc. More service to EUG would make my day.month.year.college career.

*I'm here for one more week brian, let me know if you want to meet up for some summertime spotting*

If the rumors are true, and F9 is going to ramp up at LAX, perhaps we'll see JetExpress there...and then perhaps we'll see them into EUG. I can feel your pain, though: I grew up in EUG and flew the UA 733/727 service to DEN, and loved it when Morris was in town, but once I started college, I drove to PDX exclusively... it sucks. (Although, with Amtrak and MAX Red Line, it's not as bad anymore, is it?... that is, until the legislature kills the Cascades trains)

Yup... Morris flew EUG-PDX (and perhaps EUG-SLC, not sure) prior to the Southwest merger - I once flew Morris EUG-PDX-OAK

What About Delta?

What about DL flying SLC-EUG? I think this route is inevitable in the near future. Before 9/11 they had initiated it and said bookings were good, but after the attacks and right before the planned start, they pulled it and cancelled all reservations still pending.
This route is bound to re reconsidered. What do you think???
I'd also like to see a EUG-ATL as EUG's only red-eye...I think with ATL's conections, a 737 could do this profitably. but I'm probably a minority on this one.

I think that all of Morris' service was 733 to EUG.

Skywest RJs to SLC would do very well, I think... I'm surprised that the pre-9/11 plan hasn't been put back into place yet.

DL 737s to ATL wouldn't do that hot, though -- there's a ton of PDX-ATL service, on 767 even, so there's already a lot of Oregon-Atlanta capacity... don't think they'd add more. The closest that EUG might ever see is an EUG-CVG RJ flight, but even that's a tremendous long shot (is there enough range, even?)

The problem with EUG is that it's (relatively) small, has good service 100 miles away, and with the exception of SEA/LAX/SFO/PHX/LAS/SLC/DEN, it's too far away for a (comfortable) RJ ride. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be on a CRJ or ERJ from EUG to CVG or MSP... besides, NW is already tied up with Alaska/Horizon, and Horizon has a lot of flights from EUG to SEA/PDX, and I think one to LAX.

Horizon has 3 flights to LAX, Although Two of them stop in MFR on the way (THey are all CR7s) A CRJ couldn't make it to CVG, however I wish We could see American Eagle to DFW in here on the CR7, they flew DFW-BOI on it, Maybe one could make it into EUG. But once again AA/AS have aggreements...etc so that might be difficult.

I don't see what the big deal is about driving from EUG to PDX. If you want low fares, make the drive!  Smile Honestly, EUG's just too small to expect LCC service.

I think the Skywest to SLC is a near-certainty and it will be just a matter of time. As much as I would love to see EUG grow, I do not see many more destinations in the cards beyond SLC. RNO, OAK, SJC are the most likely (again on regionals) and maybe sometime in the very distant future, ORD or DFW. I would anticipate the restoration of mainline flights on UA before any destinations east of Denver. BTW, if you are travelling on business, it is a serious pain to drive from EUG to PDX, it is a 2 hr+ drive (no traffic and if you actually obey the speed limit, and you have to be at the airport 90 minutes or so before your flight. If you have an early flight (6 or 7 am), you're getting up pretty early. I've had to do it out of Salem which is an hour closer and it is a big pain.

It is indeed a serious pain in the butt to drive from EUG if you need to get to the east coast at a decent hour of the night... I've done that before, too, and the entire way I was trying to figure out how much per hour of sleep I was really saving by driving to PDX...  Smile

SLC-EUG is under consideration. In fact, part of EUG's SCASD application was to offer cost offsets to get SkyWest service to SLC started. DL is interested, but a little concerned about the initial losses associated with starting up a new market. DL notes that EUG is the largest market west of SLC that does not have nonstop service to SLC.

Ralgha

There actually going to kind of "remodel" that area of Eugene.

They made a big deal about the run down looks, tons of alleys, no street lights, (all becuase it's mainly student housing and no one gives a hoot) all contributed to unruely behavior.

In any event, they plan to face lift it, hopefully making it a nicer place to live.

Thing is, SkyWest used to operate SLC-EUG with a couple of CRJs per day back in the late 1990s. I guess that was EUG's heyday, when UA operated 727s to DEN and probably half a dozen 737s to SFO each day, plus Horizon and United Express service to SEA and PDX. I'm wondering if it was the competition from UA that made SkyWest pull out. Now that UA is down to just RJ's, maybe think they can get a greater percentage of eastbound pax if they move back into that market?
