Swiss Suspends 4 Routes From GVA

Sat Jul 12, 2003 8:47 am

As part of its cost cutting program, the seemingly hopeless Swiss flag carrier is cutting routes and flights out of Geneve-Cointrin Airport. Flights to Athens, Tunis, Casablanca, and Basle will be cut entirely. Swiss will no longer be the busiest carrier at GVA but will retain prestigious links to London, New York, Moscow, and other top European and North African cities as well as 10 shuttle flights to Zurich Kloten Airport.

Today's Tribune de Geneve claims that BA and EasyJet are now the busier carriers at GVA.

What on earth is going on at Swiss?? It would be be an absolute tragedy if this story turned into Swissair part 2.

On the plus side for Geneva, Jet2 are to launch a new 3 flights per week schedule to Leeds/Bradford from December with 733's (think this was mentioned a couple of weeks back on another topic).
Like a fine wine, one gets better with age.

Yes, I believe they will code share with TunisAir on the GVA to Tunis flight. SR was not a fan of GVA either and by the early 1990's, it too had moved most of its flights to ZRH.

Lufthansa To Take Over Swiss

Mon Jul 14, 2003 5:18 am

Her is an article about it....

Dow Jones Business News
SWISS PRESS: Lufthansa Bids For Swiss Airline
Sunday July 13, 8:15 am ET

ZURICH -(Dow Jones)- Swiss International Air Lines Ltd. , known by its brand name Swiss, has received a takeover offer from Germany's Lufthansa , Swiss weekly Sonntagszeitung reported Sunday.
"We are talking to various companies on possible cooperation," Swiss spokesman Jean-Claude Clauzel told The Asssociated Press, reiterating earlier statements. He declined to disclose details on these talks.

The newspaper said Lufthansa's offer was made on the condition that the Swiss airline implements the radical restructuring that the airline annouced in June.

The German airline's spokesman, Bernd Hoffmann, told the Associated Press that he knew nothing about the proposal.

The newspaper also said the Swiss government and creditor banks are urging Swiss to accept the offer, but a spokeswoman for the Swiss government declined to comment.
