Air India To LAX Via FRA Using New Leased 744

Sun Jul 13, 2003 7:42 pm

I heard from a press release that Air India is planning to lease two more Boeing 744's for increased service to US and also to start a new FRA-LAX route. Can anybody confirm this and how soon can we see this really happen. I think AI will lease the 744's but service to LAX, i'm not too sure about but I hope it happens.

AI to LAX from FRA? ~ interesting, anyone add some concrete to this?

I must agree with United777,I could understand them adding 744's,but a LAX service seems a little odd.

Where did they issue that press release ? In the US ?

You are partially correct  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Correct because AI has made a preliminary application to the DoT, for the FRA-LAX route, and is hoping to get the 744's on lease, for this route as well as the 6th and 7th frequencies to EWR.
Not much luck so far...

Partially off the mark, LoL because AI's jokers have been dreamin of this LAX route for years, and going by their track record- its going to be 2010 before AI does a LAX service. LoL  Wink/being sarcastic plane pipe dreams..  Wink/being sarcastic (pun intended)

But talks are on with the Germans to use FRA as a gateway.

Do you think Lufthansa will ask for more flights to India from Frankfurt. I know recently they had to cut some seats into India because both countries could not reach a agreement on how many flights Lufthansa can fly to India. I think Lufthansa should be able to expand more flights to all cities it flies to in India. I sure hope they allow Lufthansa in a return they allow AI to fly FRA-LAX.

If FRA-LAX happens what will happen to the code-share flights with MAS and SIA to LAX Air India uses a lot with it's passengers to the US west coast.

Im wondering if India to to the US West Coast via FRA is the best routing, I would think going in the other direction would be quicker.

Perhaps a Delhi-Tokyo-LAX , or Delhi-Hong Kong-LAX flight would be quicker than going through FRA

It's a long flight either way, but going East seems to me to be quicker than going West. I could be wrong.

They could fly via SEoul where AI already has services and could kill two birds with one stone, I also heard ICN-LAX is the busiest route.

Air India offers currently codeshare flights on AI to KUL and from KUL onwards on Malaysia Airlines flight from KUL to LAX.

Air India actually enjoys fifth freedom rights at KUL for its flights to LAX. They are able to sell seats solely on the KUL-LAX sector even though they don't fly that route physically. The only other airline that I can think of that enjoy these exclusive rights at KUL is Virgin on MAS' KUL-SYD flights.

Swissgabe:
I am not too sure about KLM, but according to their website, you can book flight operated by MAS using KLM's code but it's really pricey though. At that price, you can probably fly in Business on certain airlines. Virgin on the other hand offer pretty competitive price between KUL and SYD.

Here's what I found for flights between SYD and KUL in the low season:
Virgin return to Kuala Lumpur cost AUD $ 1167
No KLM flights are available between SYD and KUL.

And for flights between SYD and LHR for similar dates:
KLM return to London cost AUD $ 1867
Virgin return to London cost AUD $ 1789

OdiE
Thanks a lot for your price comparing. I think if KLM would want to offer better prices they would do it. I mean if they can sell at high prices (or even full fare) they also would be allowed to offer cheaper fares. As long as it doesn't say in the availability of a code-share flight that it only can be sold as intl stopover connection they should be able to sell those seats.

Correction there Azaad: AI does not fly to Seoul on it own metal. I think they are codesharing with Asiana Airlines ex-DEL (it is a 767 aircraft) with an AI flight number.

I also thought the LAX/SFO plans were intended to be via ICN, NRT or KIX. Why FRA?

NRT and KIX have some of the highest landing fees in the world. (The last I heard it was about 1M yen or roughly $10,000 USD for a 747). I am not sure about ICN. NRT is also slot constrained and getting slots at the right time is key.

I heard that there is a growing Indian population in Germany as well because of that country's need for IT workers. Taken together, these factors may explain why FRA was chosen over east Asian transit points.

BECAUSE... Germans LOVE David Hasselhof and BayWatch. And you just know that AI will offer the lowest fares on the FRA-LAX route !

Yes, where will the leased B744s appear from? Could a likely lessor be SQ, since they are actively trying to offload their first 8 B744s?

AI used to fly on their own to Seoul Roy in the late 90's I meant to say they could revive a former rote as well at the same time.

The most likely source for another 744 leased to AI will again be Korean Air.

I guess they would just extend the FRA flight to LAX rather than serve FRA twice so the chances that the runway lights get chopped again are not higher if they use FRA as transferairport to the States...

To be honest I would prefer to see NZ revive their LAX-FRA flight but I guess that will not happen again.

It smells like there are some good fares betweeen FRA and LAX in the air...good for FRA, good for passengers and hopefully money-making for AI.

BECAUSE... Germans LOVE David Hasselhof , ugh, Jaysit, you didn´t mean that, aargh, say you aren´t serious, -puke- no you can´t be...I´m shocked.  Nuts
