Boeing And Airbus...can You Tell The Difference?

Mon Jul 14, 2003 7:38 am

In my opinion, it is really easy to see whether an airplane is a Boeing or Airbus. I usually just look at the height of the planes off the ground (most Airbus planes are higher off the ground than Boeing) the nose or something else. But talking to my friend recently, he has a harder time recognizing these two types of planes. Can you tell the difference?
One plane that is arguable is the 757. From far away, it looks like an Airbus.

...or maybe an Airbus looks like a 757 from far away?

Can we all tell the difference? Sure. Can most people? No, probably not, unless its a 747.

The next poster prompted me to add.... yeah, at least the A320 has the bottlenose effect going on a la the L-1011.

To me, airbus planes look more like fish than Boeings. Boeings have more of a rigid look to them.

I agree... I think a 757 is easy to spot from far away but a 767 looks like an Airbus (or vice versa) from far away. The 747 is probably the most recognized airplane in the world. A 727 couldn't possibly be mistaken for any Airbus.

The 717 is easy to identify at least when compared to an Airbus but not when compared against other McDonnell DC9-generation planes.

one of the things i use to tell if its airbus or boeing is :

during the day: just look for wingtips ..
at night: look for the flashing strobes on the wintips .. shouldn't be too hard to find at night .. airbus are double flashers, boeing flash only once ..

hope this helps ..

personally the one i have trouble with is the A321 and the B757 .. unless i can see the wingtips .. but they are both so long and the nose gear is further back on both of em ..

Airbus' side cockpit windows have the top-back corner cut off. Boeing jets don't have that. By the way, does anyone know if that is cut off for a reason?

These are the ways you can tell the difference between an Airbus A320 and a Boeing 737-800:

1. The higher stance of the A320.

2. The more pointed nose of the 737-800.

3. The more squared-off vertical tail of the A320.

4. The wing fences on the A320 wingtips.

5. The slightly squashed engine nacelle of the 737-800 (despite the 737-800's higher stance the engine nacelle is still not completely round).

Interior wise, there are two differences:

1. The wider interior of the A320.

2. The higher headroom of the 737-800.

Can most people? No, probably not, unless its a 747

You'd be surprised. It's been my experience that most non-aviation types think anything with 4 wing-mounted engines is a 747... A340, DC8, 707, it doesnt matter; they rarely notice [the lack of] the upper deck.

For the most part, people with no affiliation to the aviation world can't. For those of us that it is a career/ hobby/ obsession  Big thumbs up, we are usually able to tell the difference.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Personally I think most of the Boeing's look like a lot more went into making it, like it's more of a heavy duty plane then the Airbus. I don't really know how to explain that very well....I guess you'll just have to use your imagination.  Smile

Its extremely easy to tell the difference unless you've got a contrailer or something where the aircraft is bloody miles away.

Even a 757 and A321 is simple, A321's have wingtips, the windows are rounder, the nose is not as pointed... 757 is slightly longer etc etc etc. But you don't have to look for any detail when you get used to seeing aircraft on a regular basis, it just comes naturally. Even telling the difference between 737 versions etc.
