Pieces Of 9/11 Planes

Mon Jul 14, 2003 7:48 am

I was surprised to see that pieces of the landing gear of the 9/11 planes were actually recovered. Were these the largest pieces recovered?

As far as I know. In fact, I'm not sure if any identifiable aircraft parts were found within the WTC wreckage.

I remember seeing a piece on C-SPAN early last year about the sorting facility at Fresh Kills for WTC debris, and there were pieces of a/c found, and you could definitely see which pieces came off of the United 767.

I remember vividly the sight of one of the engines of one of the planes on a street corner on tv. It was in pretty much in tact, just the nacelles were ripped off. I was astounded to see an engine withstood the blast.

I recall seeing in a magazine ,around the 9/11 anniversary, there were some picutres of a few pieces of jet. One was a piece of fuselage, not that big, 2-3 feet long at most, and about a foot and a half tall. And you could cleary see that it was from one of the AA jets. I forgot which one though...sorry  Sad

There were some recognizeable pieces found. A section of the fuselage, with holes for the windows, were recovered. It was from American Airlines Flight # 11.

One of the United Airlines 767 engines was also found on the street near the WTC. It crashed out the windows on the other side of the south tower, from where it was hit.

I do not think any identifiable pieces of the UA 757 or the AA 757 jets that were hijacked and crashed were recovered.

AerLingusa330/ContinentalEWR: That's amazing...I didn't know that one of the engines from UA175 was found on a street near the WTC! I saw the documentary also, and they had set aside some pieces from the jets, and the piece of fuselage from UA175 which had the faint UA colors on it.

Can't speak about AA77, but I think some pieces were taken from UA93 in western PA, for analysis. That plane hit so hard it went underground several feet and shattered, but I seem to recall hearing some of the flight deck components were recovered.

It would have been amazing, and lucky, if any of the FDR's had been found and functional.

The forensics teams were able to, by process of elimination, identify the remains of the Muslim cowards who hijacked the jets. No clue what happened to those, but who really cares?

A piece of landing gear almost fatally wounded a pedestrian on the sidewalk below. Her ordeal was profiled in the news.

An airplane is mostly air, fuel, and aluminum. Those things disappear in a collision of that magnitude. But the landing gear assemblies and the engines are very dense, solid and heavy. They survive just about any destruction because their inertia carries them through solid concrete walls. It's almost impossible to make a jet engine or wheel boggies disappear in a collision.

Pieces of the planes were on display at the 9/11 exhibit in the Smithsonian a few months ago. A piece of passenger window frame and some wing skin were clearly identifiable.

One of the 9/11 documentaries showed the trailer containing aircraft parts at the Fresh Kills site. I actually recognized some of the plumbing on the GE CF6-80A2 engine from AA #11.

Is there a website that would have more pictures of the "remains" of the a/c involved on 9/11?
I have heard as well that there were parts of the planes found, but I have'nt seen too many pictures.
Thanks!

I remember a picture of a dumpster (yes, a regular dumpster) at the WTC site that was spraypainted "Aircraft Parts". So, I guess they must have put things from the site that were recognizably from the planes.

Perhaps this is off topic, but I am compelled to comment on the following:

The forensics teams were able to, by process of elimination, identify the remains of the Muslim cowards who hijacked the jets. No clue what happened to those, but who really cares?

While we would all agree that the individuals who committed these acts were heinous cowards, could we please leave their religion out of it? Do we speak of "white, Christian terrorists" when discussing bombings of family-planning clinics? I don't thinks so.

A regretable day for aviation and history both. I know that the nose cone of the second plane blew right out the other side and on out away, but I have not heard of other debris until now.

Considering victims and property in the buliding where totally atomized (My apologies if this too strong a word) it brings me to ask how anything on or in the aircraft could have survived if they went first on impact, can someone who knows something about pyshics possibly explain?

Attn: fanofjets:

DL_Mech posted a link to the Smithsonian's collection of parts. At the top of their page, they ALSO make reference to 19 ISLAMIC extremists...So the Smithsonian Institute also made reference to the coward's religion! I would recommend you contact them and ask the museum to make their comment more "politically correct" so we're more aware and diverse and sensitive and whatever else.

The white people who bomb family planning clinics ARE absolutely white, christian terrorists...it's just that the liberal news media can't get away with saying that here, because of the majority of Christians in this country would go berserk.

What about that letter that apparently was in the USPS shipment on the AA 757 that hit the North Tower and someone found close to the WTC area?

No way a radom cone of the AA 767 survived. It is just a piece of aluminum. It would have been the first piece reduced to fragments upon impact with the solid steel exterior support beams. If you look at the footage you can see all those shiny shredded pieces of aluminum fluttering in the air. As far as the physics involved, I explain again. The heavier objects are very dense and solid. Their inertia, produce by their weight and their speed, is enough to blow a hole through any office building, which is mostly air and glass. Even the concrete walls of the core can't stop a 10,000 lb ball of steel traveling at 450 mph. If you take a one once bullet and throw it at a blanket it won't go through. But if you accelerate it to several hundred miles per hour, it will go through no problem. Accelerate it even faster and it would go through thin steel. Make it go even faster, in a vacuum to eliminate friction, and it will produce a crater in armor. The piece of foam that came off the external tank of the shuttle, made a nasty hole in the leading edge of the left wing. Although it was only foam, it did have mass, and at 500 mph, that combination was enough to make a hole.

The section of fuselage that ContinentalEWR mentioned is currently on display at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum (the aircraft carrier museum) in NYC. I saw it the other day along with the rest of their tribute to 9/11. It's very powerful to see those remains.

The right click option is disabled on this page, but there are plenty of pictures of pieces of the aircraft engines surrounded by FBI agents.

Thank you for the heads-up, StevenUhl777, and for the link, DL_Mech. I have sent the Smithsonian the following e-mail:
Dear Sir or Madam,

While I found your Web pages on the September 11 collection to be informative and invaluable,

http://americanhistory.si.edu/september11/collection/record.asp?ID=45

I would like to request an amendment to the above-mentioned page, in regard to the "19 Islamic extremists" mentioned in the "Context" box. I strongly suggest the deletion of the word "Islamic" - do we really need to mention the religion of the hijackers? Though they may purport to have acted in the name of Islam and Allah, surely the majority of Muslims would sharply disagree. After all, do we refer to the extremists who bomb family-planning clinics as "White, Christian extremists"? I strongly feel that a correction is due; it mars an otherwise fine Web page.

Thank you for your consideration.

I am very disappointed that a fine and reputable organization such as the Smithsonian would let something like this slip. It's just plain (no pun intended) wrong. I urge other A.net fans who feel likewise to write as well.

They were "Islamic Extremists", that's a correct term. They use extreme interpretations of Islam to justify their crimes against humanity, it's a correct term.

There are Christian Extremists, Jewish Extremists etc.

They fight because of their "extreme" religious teaches tell them, so they are Chritian/Islamic/Jewish Extremists.

David Koresh and the Branch dividians were Christian extremists, and were labled as such correctly.

Actually, the radome is constructed of composite material. "Radar waves" cannot traverse aluminum very well.

To the point, as right now, are all pieces still hold under FBI's hands?
