I have flown SAS several times mostly on the Osl-Cph-Osl route, but onece Osl-Lhr-Osl.
I have always flied with a member of the Md80 family, but this summer i was so lucky that a Dc9-41 took me from Cph-Osl.

The aircrafts are nice, but sometimes the seats are little rumbeling. I think the service overall is good, but last time i flew with them the Fa's were a little "bad".
On the short route from Oslo-Copenhagen the food is not much to talk about. Only a vacumpacked sandwich. no tray at all. When you flies the route in the morning, you get a little brekfast tray which is nice. (cheese, jam, yoghurt, juice, tea/coffee and bread)
on the longer flight to London, the food is bigger, and the service much better.
The pilots is skilled, and Cph which i think is their mainhub out of Oslo, Stocholm and Oslo is wery nice.

I will rate Scandinavian to 8(+) out of 10

I'v forgot that most of the seats in economy (md80 Dc9 especially in the morning) have wide seats with leather armrest, and inseat telephones.(because many bussines people flies with them in the morning) Thats a big pluss.

SAS is a great airline and offers great service even on economy class. I often fly SAS on both domestic flights in Norway and on international flights. Some of the aircrafts are a bit old, but most of these will be replaced soon. In my opinon SAS is far better than its main competitor, Braathens. I rate the airline 9 out of 10!

Well, I have heard that many people actually hates SAS's cold meal. They have said that it's almost every time same food and tastes awful! Hot meal is OK, but cold meal really sucks! Otherwise SAS is very safety and reliable airliner. I can't say anything about service, because I haven't ever fly with SAS, but on march 4th I'll fly HEL-CPH (DC-9), CPH-BKK (B767) and BKK-CPH (B767). On route from CPH-HEL I'll use Air Botnia (F28), which is SAS's partner here in Finland and also owned by SAS. After that trip I'll tell my opinion again to you...

Overall, I think SAS is good, but rather I would fly Finnair, especially between HEL-ARN, because Finnair's food is much better than SAS have. Also SAS's planes interiors are sometimes guite old and "much used". New c/s is nice, but I can't understand why SAS MD-80's and DC-9's are often so dirty!!!!

I have flown SAS a couple of times: HEL-ARN, ARN-DUB, DUB-CPH, CPH-HEL, HEL-CPH, CPH-LHR. Most of those were on DC-9/MD-80s, but the CPH-LHR leg was a 767. I would say SAS is one of your decent European airlines: they're safe, the service is good even in economy (can't say anything about business class), food is okay and overall there's nothing major to complain about. I have to agree, though, that the planes and interiors seem a bit... not dirty but worn. That isn't the point, of course, as they take you from A to B reliably and safely. I'll give an 8+ out of 10.

I can't resist comparing to the major Nordic competitor, my "home" airline Finnair. Just one strong point to each one where they outperform the other, leaving out such things as network coverage and fleet size. SAS: Their cabin crew seem more polite and dedicated while Finnair's are sometimes a little cold and distant towards you, the passenger and customer. Finnair: Their fleet is more interesting and varied, with such aircraft as the MD-11 and A320. Scandinavian's B767s are workhorses but, let's face it, dull ones.

I love flying with SAS. As a matter of fact, I'll be flying with them next week. I fly from GOT to ARN several times a year, and I've never had a bad experience on board. I really enjoy flying in the morning, when they serve you a complete breakfast with a sandwich, fruit, tea/coffee, yoghurt, and orange juice. I've never seen anything wrong with their domestic food. I've liked every meal I've been served there.
As for the aircraft, I just love the MD80srs. They are comfortable, smooth and spacious. Especially on the GOT-ARN route. If you catch the right flight, you may have the whole aircraft for yourself. I try taking the first flights in the morning, or the last in the evening/night. Man, is it comfy or is it?
I'd give SAS a 9++ out of 10. If the F/A's wore bikinis on board, it'd be a 10!

I flew SAS from ORD-CPH-ORB and had a very pleasant experience. The FA's were extremely friendly, especially on the return flight. The 767 didn't seem dirty, but I could tell it had many miles on it. Overall, however, I'd rate them as one of my favorite airlines.

Does anyone know what SAS plans on doing with its fleet? Will the MD's be replaced with B717, 737-6?

you would rather fly Finnair than SAS, how could you know this when you have never flown with them ??

Why Rather Finnair Than SAS...

Wed Dec 15, 1999 1:36 am

To Matt and others...

In my opinion Finnair is very good, but I can't be very objective when I say that, because I live in Finland and Finnair is our national carrier... because I haven't ever flown with SAS I can't tell my opinions as a passenger, so I told those opinions as a planespotter and aviation enthusiast. Just for same reason I didn't rate their service... I think there is not very big difference at service

How could I rate food in my last post? Well, my mother travels very often with SAS (she works at travel agency) from Finland to other Scandinavian countries and also to Europe. I also know many other business travellers who use frequently SAS. And what's common with those people? They all think that SAS is very good company, some of those think it's better than Finnair (like my mom), but they all says that SAS's cold meal really sucks! So that's only what I have heard...

Well, and now the answer to your question Matt. I have 4 reasons why I would choose Finnair rather than SAS: food, punctuality, fleet and interiors of planes.

Finnair was at last year European's 3rd punctual airliner and at this year their aim is to be the 1st!!! Can SAS put better??? I believe not, even SAS's punctuality record is good too.

And the fleet... at the moment both companies workhorses are different types of MD-80's and DC-9's. But if we think the future, SAS has choosen 737NG and Finnair Airbus. Much rather I would fly using A319, A320 or A321 than 737-600!!!!!! (please do not think that I'm a big Airbus fan just for my nick, because I'm not!)

Also, which would you choose rather on longhaul routes? Finnair's great and quiet MD-11 or SAS's quite a noisy and boring 767?????????

Like I told before, SAS's planes interiors are usually quite shabby, otherwise than Finnair's! I have fly with Finnair a lot and their planes interiors are every time almost like new and very clean!!!!!!! From inside and outside! I think Finnair takes better care of their planes than any other carrier in the whole world!!!!!!

Overall I think that both companies are very good and they have great future...

Best regards,

Couldn´t Agree More.....

Sun Dec 19, 1999 3:22 am

From a proffessional point of wiew,AY beats SK almost everywhere....+form a non proffessional wiew, havin´flown A LOT with both:Finnair is number one without competition!!!
Better, more personal service, nicer interiors,a more genuine first impression every time....and given with that certain glimps in the corner of their eyes,as if to say that they´re truly givin´everything to make your trip as enjoyable as possible..
Take that gimmick with painting aircrafts, summertimes with the moomins and wintertime with santa....not to forget the interiors during the entire crew dressed like santa.... .
SAS is and will undoubtly remain a stiff compared to Finnair!!!
