Pax Refuse To Leave After 30-hour Delay

Mon Jul 14, 2003 9:16 pm

Hey, take a look at this!!!!
Too bad charter airlines keep this bad reputation.

Paris (dpa) - Fifty passengers staged a seven hour sit-in after
their plane touched down at Paris' Orly Airport in protest at a
30-hour delay in their flight from Mexico, airport officials said
Monday.
The passengers refused to leave the plane and demanded compensation
from the charter airline Aeris. The reason for the delay in departing
Cancun in Mexico was unclear.
The passengers left the plane early Monday announcing they wanted
to take action against the airline, which had only offered them a
hotel room and taxi ride in way of compensation.

They just told reported of this story at the local radio over here.

I think Aeris is quite famous for this kind of service ...

It's the second time it happens.
The first time, 60 pax staged a sit-in in the aircraft because they arrived at Paris after a 38 hours delay.
The aircraft, flying from Malé, had to stop at Colombo due to a mecanical problem...
Of course the airline was Aéris.

Mmm, who knows what the truth is here, but if they offered a hotel room + transfers, surely they can't complain that much? Maybe it was handled very poorly...

The reason for the delay in departing Cancun in Mexico was unclear.

Unclear !!, how about a hurricane that came through there and stopped virtually every aircraft from leaving. Continental ferried their planes out of there empty just to get them out of the way of the damage

I'd rather be stuck in Mexico than stuck in France, so I don't know what they are complaining about.

"They got a hotel.........I've heard Aeroflot doesn't even give hotels, in some cases."

LOT Polish Airlines even gives out hotels and meal vouchers. That's pretty sad.

What a stupid thing for these people to do. Isn't there usually a good reason for a delay? Weather, mechanical, crew shortage etc.?

Well, with the recently passed EU directive which yet has to be implemented by the local governments everything will change - also for charter carriers:

If a long haul flight reaches its destination with a delay of more than four hours passengers get the ticket price back.

This is nowhere close to what they said, and besides, the compensation is only if the airline is responsible for the delay. For example, weather isnt applicable, nor is any other outside force. Basically the only thing that is applicable is if the airline has a mechanical or has crew issues and is directly responsible for the delay.

It frightens me that some of the fly by night charter companies may put planes into the air that are not quite ready to go into the air, because they do not want to get into this sort of delay

I am a pilot for a charter airline.(Not the one mentioned but I still want to clearfy some things which may not be known by everybody)since my company is a charter too which means we don't sell tickets to the people to carry them from point A to B.Mostly we fly for tour operators which sells holidays, they take you from your house to your holiday destination and we are the part of the chain. But sometimes unexpected delays occur (other than tecnical problems which can happen to any carrier conducting anykind of flight operations). These kinds of delays mostly happens from the last minute changes of the tour operators .What happens is,until the last minute tour operators tries to sell tickets since they pay the airline company for the flight hour not the number of the passengers.Which means it doesn't matter if they bring only 1 passenger or 189 to the aircraft tour operator pays the same money. And they change their plans according to the number of tickets sold and if they think its not profitable they change their demand of airplane or time of the flight. What happened to me once is, the people boarded with a great anger nobody was happy.Accusing us for making a very big delay and they were waiting at the airport for hours and they were told that the airplane was delayed. But according to the schedule from our company we were on time.At one point some angry people started shouting at the F/A's and the Captain made a PA announcement about it.We reported that to the company. And the result was found later as there were two planes from that airport(one in the morning and one in the afternoon)So tour company cancelled the morning flight because not many passengers and transferred the the pax to the afternoon flight. And notified the company not to send the morning flight so they saved money. But interestingly nobody ever told the people who arrived to the airport inthe morning that the flight cancelled but they took the easy way and put the blame to the airline. That was only an example I have witnessed. If a delay happens because of our tecnical problem my compant puts another airplane instead of the broken one if we don't have any available we subcharter it to another airline which has an aircraft available.
The last thing I can say about safety that, we never put an airplane into the air without meeting the safety requirements.A pilot never accepts such thing.Even the owner of the company can not order such thing.Because first of all my own life is in that airplane too.And I must say I am not the "most brave"pilot in the industry to fly with an unsafe airplane. Also CAA's of the countries regularly makes inspections to assure that every airplane is properly maintained. So don't worry just sit back, relax and enjoy your flight make sure you keep your seatbelt on everytime you sit .

Wing, after reading your post, I must express my respect for you guys who work for charter companies. It must be stressful to work in those conditions, and then having to hear all the passengers complains...
