The Best Unscheduled Aircraft Swap

Mon Jul 14, 2003 11:14 pm

Of course, I'm referring to a scenario when you get to the gate, knowing in advance that you'll be flying on a 727 for instance, and a 757 pulls up...something unexpected.

For me, it was in March 2001. My friend Jeff and I were flying back up to Boston from New Orleans after Spring Break came to an end. We were on Delta's 6:00pm flight to ATL, connecting to BOS. MSY-ATL was scheduled to be a 757, which isn't too shabby, but low and behold, a 767-400 pulled up the the gate. It was a surreal flight....not very full, we each had a whole row to ourselves....and the flashes of lightning every now and then outside added to the "mystique" of it. Certainly, one of my most memorable flights ever.

What about for you guys/gals?

i once got on a Star Airlines A320 instead of the scheduled AF A320 on a flight from CDG to MAD (equipment substitution).
Although the seat pitch was knee-crunchingly small, I enjoyed travelling on a fairly small French charter airline, which doesn't operate to my home country.

I got and MD-83 instead of a Dash 8 once from Grenada to Trinidad on BWIA.. Was a nice 15 minute flight.  Smile

I got a B757 instead of a B737 from MIA to SJU on AA recently.

When instead of the regular A321 or A300 suddenly I was boarding a A340 on a short hop from FRA-MUC. Now that was a difference in noise protection and seat comfort!

Not flown but a couple of the best swaps here I can remember was a LaTur A300 in place of an American Trans Air L1011 operating to MAN around 25th September 1992 (can't remember if it was from JFK or MCO) and an Air New Zealand DC10 operating a BA MAN-JFK service either in 1979 or 1980 .

Worst Swap

Was scheduled on a UAL 777 from ORD to EWR. Switched to a 733, as the 777 stayed in EWR after arriving from LHR the previous day  Sad
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

My favorite swap was from Cancun to Mexico City. It was supposed to be a 757 but we got a 727 instead.

Another time was a United Shuttle flight from LAX to SFO. Instead of the usual 737, we got a 767.

One swap I wasn't too excited about was a IL-62 for a YAK-42D on Cubana. I love the IL-62 but I knew this would be the one opportunity to fly on a YAK-42D. This was Havana back to Cancun.

Although I wasn't on this flight, I heard of this one. On a scheduled Air Canada flight they swapped the regular plane for an Air Canada Jetz 737. For those that don't know, AC Jetz is a corporate charter division of Air Canada, used mainly by sports teams. The plans is configured with 48 business class seats, thats it, no economy. Everyone on that plane got 'upgraded' that day.

I think I have had several aircraft swaps in my years of travelling, but only this one stands out.

The L1011 is the aircraft that began my love affair with Delta. I had not ever flown on one, but as a kid, it was the L1011s parked in ATL whenever my family would drive past that I thought were gorgeous. This was as a kid of 10 years old, and continues to this day.

Anyway, I had been flying back and forth between CAE - ORD via ATL on a regular basis for 9 months, and the largest aircraft scheduled on that route was the 767 (certainly nothing to complain about for me, I love that one too). Anyway, on my LAST flight home from ORD, early one Sat morning, with all of the stuff from my corporate apartment packed up, I arrived at the airport early, checked in, only to see an L1011 sitting at the gate instead of the scheduled 767. I was ecstatic, and of course being Gold Medallion (this was 1996), I got upgraded to first on a relatively empty flight. It was amazing. Will never forget it.

SQ MNL-SIN...expecting an A340 and got a B747-400 instead with the then new Ultimo Biz Class seats...great flight!

BG KTM-DAC...scheduled F-28 4000 but got an A310-300 instead...much bettwe ride...another time switch from a F-28 4000 and got a DC 10

TG BKK-DAC...rather than an A300 I got a MD-11...great ride!

QF MNL-SYD...B767-300 written in the timetable but I get to the check in counter and I found out that a B747SP classic was waiting for me at the gate! I was so glad I got to ride on the classic before i was retired!

In 1995 I went to visit a mate in Milan .I got a cheap flight from LGW to MXP. The ticket showed I was flying TEA, so I was expecting a 737 -300 Instead we got a Meridiana MD83 with the TEA logo on the tail

On the return I was expecting the MD83 and instead got an unmarked all white BAe 146 with an English flight crew.
The agency I booked the ticket through closed a couple of months later.

I've personally not had an aircraft substitute, but about five years ago my parents were due to fly Manchester-Gerona and had their boring Airtours 757 go tech and instead got an Air Plus Comet A310. I was most envious when I heard!

In 1986 I was to scheduled to fly from PMI ( Palma de Mallorca ) to DUS ( Dusseldorf ) aboard an Aviaco DC-9. When we were taken out to the aircraft by bus I was excited to see that it was an Iberia B 727-200..the name painted on the nose was " Jerez Xeres Sherry " --forgive me if I mispell-- I'm not sure if Iberia still names their aircraft. The plus here was I was assigned to seat 3 A....Business Class...it was a great flight back to DUS.

Another memorable time was on a flight from TXL ( Berlin Tegel ) to Frankfurt it was scheduled as a Pam Am B 727-200, but after arrival at the gate I was excited to see they had substitued an A310 - Clipper Hamburg -

And one last time was a flight I was to take MUC to DUS on Lufthansa. It was scheduled as a B 737-200. When I arrived it had been replaced with a B 727-200 - City of Hildesheim- I always enjoyed my times on the 727.

KLM 747-400 from LHR to AMS (this is a long time ago, somewhere in July '98) should have been a 737. Afterward I continued to Seoul on a 747-300 Combi. I asked the stewardess about the 747 service from LHR and she told me that there was no other aircraft available at that moment.

Swap

Tue Jul 15, 2003 3:17 am

G'day

A recent flight on LH from MXP to FRA was supposed to be an A 321, but it was an A 300. My seat was up front, window on the left, which is my preferred place to be with the 2 across seating on the A 320 series. On the A 300 seating is economy, even though LH "sells" the front section as business. Well, there is a curtain and you get magazines. While the A 300 has 2-4-2 seating, kind of a 2 across seating , the A 300 dia gets very narrow up front, and so do the seats. A marginal economy seat for a full C fare. The crew - and most other seats were occupied by subloads - thought nothing about this, LH, thank you for your consideration.

No newpapers though on the red eye special 7 AM flight - I have alway wondered why, the shops at the airport all have the latest edition of all the local newspapers, and the Harald Trib is printed locally and thus also available. $$ ?

To compensate though they tried two different approaches into FRA, both from the east, in good visibility, with the first faaar toooo high though, so they had to try once more. No explanation as to why though. LH, thanks again.

Cheers

Peter

I was supposed to be on a US Airways 767 from PHL to NAS but the plane was downgraded to a 757. This was a disappointment because I had just flown in on a 757 to PHL and I wanted to fly on a different airplane. The funny thing is, I was on the same 757 I had just gotten off of.

Hello there,

I had two nice changes.

In 1994 I had the change from 737 to Fokker 28 on a Sabena flight from BRU to LYS. The 737 was grounded due to problems with the brakes. It was a 4 hour delay and I almost missed the ship for the river cruise I was booked on. But it was my only Fokker 28 flight so far. It was a Sabena flight operated by TAT.
The return flight was the sheduled 737 but the flight was operated by Aigle Azur with a former Hapag Lloyd 737-200.
The other real change was a Swiss MD83 instead of an Avro 100 on DUB-ZRH last year. Pretty nice as I like flying the MD80s and have flown so often on Avros.
Regards

It was just before I joined the airline, but after the terrible British Airtours B737-200 accident in Manchester in 1985, BA stuck Concorde on some domestic services whilst its own 737s were being checked. A friend managed to get to Newcastle on it from Heathrow. I think many BA staff took advantage.

In my own time, I flew Heathrow-Manchester in 1989 knowing in advance the flight had been upgraded to Concorde (from a 757) for the opening of the new terminal. 60 bloody quid it was - the most expensive air ticket I'd ever bought at that time!

That was when the Shuttle really was "turn up and take off" and BA kept a backup aircraft in case the "front-runner" got full.

Jeez, times change...

Well...

I was flying allot between Toronto & Vancouver at the time -- allot. Usually on worn out ex-CP 767's. I arrive for my flight... overbooked... with an A340 at the gate.

They then upgraded me to Executive, with PFE's  Smile

That was nice.

Too bad it did not happen on the red-eye flight back.

LAX-IAH redeye on Continental. Scheduled 757-200 was downgraded to an MD-80. Oversold and was weight restricted two seats. To add to the misery we rode a very turbulent air mass from LAX departure to New Mexico.

Couple years ago OMA-MKE on YX. Substitued their sports charter DC-9-30 for a DC-9-14. The seating was awesome; essentially every row had exit row (plus some) legroom. Factor in the 2x2 seating, some chocalate chip cookies and champagne and it was a great ride. Short, but great.

had mainly disappointing swaps.
March 1993 the first A-340 Lufthansa tested on Athens-FRA broke so they sent the A-300 instead. grrr
Feb 1995 the MEA 720 broke down and we flew a 707 Beirut-Larnaca instead. Fine as I flew the exact 720 already
Nov. 1995 my Icelandair 757 was stuck in the north so Icelandair put me on a direct L-1011 flight of Royal Jordanian JFK-A MS. Great!
July 1998 the US Airways DC-9 was substituted for a F-100. I preferred the DC-9 as I never flew it yet then.
May 1999 the special chosen DC-10 flight DEN-SFO turned out to be a 757, grr
Oct 2000 the MX 727 M EX-Huatulco was swapped for a 320. *sob*
Febr 2001 due to tight connection I was placed on a direct 717 HOU-Biloxi-FLL instead of the DC-9 connections at ATL. I preferred the AirTran DC-9 as I flew on the 717 already.
april 2001 the F-70 TXL-MS / EHAM), Netherlands">AMS broke down and we got a 733, neutral
May 2001 the special chosen FH-227 flight of Aerocaribe CUN-CZM-CUN was a J-31, grr
Sept. 2002 We missed the connection onto the Air France 777 and I was put on a Delta 777 instead (also missing a connecting AM MD-87).
March 2003 the EK 777 in the schedule between DXB and MCT turned out to be a A-332 again
So on 300 flights quite some swappings and complications, of which the most I was disappointed about. (but I am the kind of traveller who chooses planes and routes for their *rareness* so have the risk of getting disappointed). Once I could avoid a swapping, when my especially chosen L-1011 flight ATL-FLL was swapped to an MD-88 and I asked to be placed on a later L-1011 flight that day, which was fine.

nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

All of these = first

Britannia 757 for an Air NZ 737 CHC-AKL
Air Malta 737 for an Air NZ 737 WLG-CHC
Air Nauru 737 for an Air NZ 737 WLG-CHC
Royal Brunei 737 for an AirNZ 737 WLG-AKL
Polynesian 737-800 for a QANTAS 737-400 WLG-SYD
Air Pacific 737 for a QANTAS 737 WLG-SYD

Then long, long ago TWA 747-100 for a 707 NYC-LHR, when I had never even seen a 747 before.

Mine would have to be when I picked up an overtime trip in LAX. Seat map showed 757, got to the gate late only to noticed that they weren't even boarding. Agents annouce that there was a aircraft swap (really rare thing for AA) and that they had to reassign seats, but never said what type of aircraft it was. As I was getting my new boardin pass a airport ready reserve FA checked in for the flight. Still I thought it was going to be the same old 757. Walked down the jetbridge only to enter a really, really big cabin. Hey this is a 767 (first time on one). Turns out our orginal aircraft was reassigned to do a Jackson Hole flight and the only replacement avalible was a 767. Nice first class (still not as nice as the 777 though)

Flying NJ from ATL-MCI, I arrived at the gate expecting a 737-200-19, and found an MD-87 (which had ever-so-slightly more leg room in the bulkhead business class seat than the MD-82/83).

Of course, I asked the gate agent if there was room in Business Class for a non-rev to be seated in 1-A, and was rewarded with a very pleasing "yes".

I wasn't sure what the original a/c type was supposed to have been, but when my Dad and I moved his father from Chicago to SF, we caught a UAL redeye back to SF in November 1982.

Turned out it was a brand new 767-200, which had only just been introduced into United fleet three short months earlier.

I remember how new it was, smooth flight, so big in the interior, and how happy I was. Come to think of it, that was my only flight on a 762, the rest have all been -300ER's....still an excellent plane!

Back in the early 70's before DTW had 747 service, my friend and I flew to ORD specifically to get an AA 747 ride to LAX. We refused to get on the substituted 707(?) and, with an additional 2 hour wait, we changed to a TWA 747 for the rest of the trip. There were three more stewardesses than pax on that flight. I don't think they covered fuel taxiing costs on that one, but we sure had fun...Jack

I never really got anything that good.
In 1996 flying from LAX to JFK our 762 went out of service and we got a 767-300 but it was called a 767-323 by the safety card so I figured I was on some kind of special plane.
The second was in 1999 when my LH 742 from JFK to FRA got substituted by a 747-400 which is cool because it means I got to take more of Lufthansa's planes.

Bad substitution:

MKE-DFW Midwest Express April '03, DC9-30 instead of the previously scheduled -10. What made it even worse was the fact that I later learned that the next flight was a 717 (virtually brand new at the time)!

Good substitution:

ATL-JFK Delta July '01, BusinessElite, MD-11 instead of First Class on the MD-88.

For me it was a flight on Delta between I believe ATL and Philly? or might have been Pitsburgh.. not sure which one of the two.. anyways, the scheduled aircraft was an MD80, but they had an equipment swap.. lucked out big time and got a L1011! I was definately happy.

During it's final weeks, Delta L-1011s were substitued regularly for odd routes. Here's one in IAH that I wish I had known about; I would have jumped on this flight:

The best one for me was AC YYZ-LHR in November 2000, scheduled to be a 744, when lo and behold an A330 turned up at the gate! One of my best flights - but I've still never flown on a 747!

On the same trip, I was to fly YYZ-MCO on an AC A320, but the flight had been oversold and I ended up in Business Class on a CP 763 (in Canada Goose c/s) going YYZ-MIA, and then in a premium seat on an AA 757 from MIA-MCO.

Our Airtran flight MCO-ATL-MCO was due to be one of the old 737-200s, and we ended up in a nice new 717, being bumped to business class on the return journey!

In Apr 2002, I was supposed to fly in a Korean Air A330, but due to over-booking, they put us on a B747-400. It was not good or bad. But I prefer the A330.
The biggest mistake made by most human beings: Listening to only half, understanding just a quarter and telling double.

Midwest Express: May, 2000. . .DEN-MLW DC-9-10 swapped for an MD-80. . .I was not happy at all.

I assume you were trying to say Milwaukee. Their 3 letter code is MKE.

The most surprising aircraft change - a few years ago I wanted to fly DUS-FRA (standby). The first flight (Airbus 300) was full - so I went to the gate of the next fligh (scheduled 737-200) with no hope. But instead of 737 a DC-10 flew this leg - this was my last DC-10 flight so far.

I've only had two flights in which the aircraft types were switched last minute, one good and one bad:

The worst: In June 1992, I was scheduled to fly from Dallas(DFW)-Paris on an American MD-11. I was thrilled, because I had never been on that type. I was more excited about trying out an MD-11 than actually going to Europe! When we got to the gate, there sat a 767-300. Apparently, the MD-11 had mechanical problems and we were stuck flying the 763 all the way across the Atlantic. I love 767's, but I had flown many of those before, so it was real disappointment.

The best: In June 1995, I was flying from Dallas(DFW)-London(Gatwick) on British Airways. It was supposed to be on their usual DC-10, and I had flown the BA DC-10 before. When we arrived at the gate, this huge, gorgeous 747-200 was parked there. When I enquired with staff about the 742, they told me that so many people had tried booking this flight that they brought the huge jumbo over. What a great surprise that was!

2 examples, related by sheer co-incidence to Aer Lingus.

When I was a kid we were going from Antigua to Trinidad was expecting the BWIA 727-100,,,normal at that time..... what turned up was a leased Aer Lingus B720.

More recently, Dublin-Birmingham. Was supposed to be an Aer Lingus 146-300. What turned up was a leased Eurofly DC-9-50. All cabin announcements were in Italian.

On EK from Dubai to CGK, a 777 300 instead of the scheduled 777 200, my frist time on the wonderfully loooong aircraft.
On UA from SFO to LAX, a 757 instead of the scheduled 737.
On AF from Paris to Cayenne, because of a mechanical we got to fly on Corsair 747 SP, wonderful wonderful aircraft even if the interior was looking a bit old, but hey now i can say I have flown on all types of 747s except the 747 400 ER.
On AF from Valencia to Paris, instead of the baby bus we got a chartered 146...full to the brim but still.....

February 2003, MEL - CBR

Flight was supposed to be a Qantas 737-400, instead we had a pleasant surprise when we saw a BAE 146-300 parked there. It was a great flight. The
146-300 is a great aircraft to fly on, as comfortable as the 734 if not better.

Cheers.

So I had this (actual aircraft):
