A Visit To Mojave.

Tue Jul 15, 2003 10:00 am

Hi!

I'm planning to make a visit to Edwards Air Force Base. On the way I'll pass by Mojave. I've seen quite a lot of photos of airliners parked at that place. What I would like to know if it's easy to get there and what are the chances to take pictures to those planes parked there. Any information on these will be great!
Thanks and regards

If you get in to see it, get some good photos of ex-Vanguard Airlines aircraft. Especially if you can find N912MA (ME? MP?). 603 or 620PC are also good. I just want to play with my "blow it up" program. It will take any photo and show an object in it exploding. It's pretty cool, if somewhat cartoonish.

If you like, you can check out their website:

I've never been hassled on picture taking. You should go on a Sunday, less chance of being hassled. One place I like to get a pic of planes being scrapped over by the animal hospital. It's over by the A^A 727's and CO 747's ,but I read that the 747's are gone. I was last there in October,02.
Here's a pic that you can get there:

Yes,it's my pic!!

My last visit to Mojave was in 2000 with my brother, Dad and brother-in-law. We were shooting pictures through the fence, and within minutes an official-looking white van roared up to us. A stern-looking man rolled down the window of the van - and announced that for $10 he'd take us on a tour of the facility, inside the gates!!!! We got about a 30-minute tour (more than enough to see everything), and the gentleman was nice enough to stop the van at request for photos. He wouldn't let us get out, but the big sliding door on the van was perfect for photo opps. Even if this guy doesn't appear during your visit, perhaps a stop by the office would be warranted to see if they still do this little "perk".

According to the site, tours of MHV can be arranged. It said that some areas are off-limits due to the request of tenants. I would imagine that the airlines which store aircraft at the field do not want unescorted visitor traipsing around them.

as everyone knows I am obsessed with aircraft doors! I want to open each one on every aircraft! So far its just 733 and BAe146, I would be out there trying to push an air stair in the 100 degree wether maybe after about 5 hours, I would manage to get it up to a plane door, walk up, and discover it has been sealed! lol

When I was out there in January, there were no Vanguard MD-80s there. I think they are in Tucson or Kingman, maybe VCV but doubtful.

LGB Photos; I was in VCV last Monday and didn't see any Vanguards. Lots of UA 727's ,DL 727's , UA 744 & 767's . Lots of TWA birds . Saw my first 767 getting scrapped  Sad . No Vanguards in IGM,either- I was just there last week.

Hamilton Aviation at TUS has a number of Vanguards in storage. When I was there in March, there were probably 4 or 5 MD-80's, and a number of 737's.

If Imisspiedmont checks this thread, he can likely update you on exactly what's there.
