Has to be Barra - the only airport built on a beach, where the runways close when the tide comes in!

Unique Airport - Zurich
Already "unique" because of it's name ...

MLE would be on my list and PBH has to be pretty cool as well ...

SXM hasn't been mentioned so far.

Does anyone know if Barra has won the right to remain open? I've heard rumours about it closing.

Barra is still open... alive and well. still running... tho the airfare from london via glasgow is ridiculously high.. about £250... you can get a transatlantic flight for that much..

    Hi,

Can we also describe why it is unique, because I would like to hear why.

For terminal buildings you would have to include Kona, Hawaii. The terminal building has no building but fake rock structures w/ foilage separate the aircraft from you.

unique in it´s own way, but a strange airport indeed is the one i flew to Amsterdam from just yesterday: VOLOS, Greece.

It is a military airport (lots of F16's) and it handles around 4 commercial flights.

    a week!!!

all of these flights, like the one I was on yesterday, are charter flights from western Europe for tourists visiting nearby region of Pilion.

There is an apron that fits one small jet (737 or a320) the terminal is at least a mile away from that apron. busses take care of that trip.

the terminal building is smaller than my house! and that includes both arrivals as well as departure hall.

The flights to (via Skiathos) and from there were some of the most interesting i've ever flown, and when i find some time over the next weeks i'll write a trip report and let you know the rest.

    regards,

This on on the Caribbean island of Saba claims to have the shortest runway in commercial av. use. Here's a link to some great approach shots.

I personally think that the approach to Leh airport in Northern India is very unique...it seems from this photo that the landing requires maneuvering through mountains at low altitudes (! scary !).
