Ever Been On The Same Aircraft Twice?

Wed Jul 16, 2003 8:56 am

In your many travels, have you ever been on the same aircraft twice. Or had a crew that you recognized from a previous flight?

Given that Air New Zealand have 13 737's and I am a passenger in them on average twice a week, I not only recognise just about everybody, but I notice when my 'personal' seat (12A) has a defect that hasn't been fixed since the last time I sat in it.

When I was in DFW saturday waiting for my flight to HOU it was on a CRJ-700. We were supposed to be on a flight with one CRJ but that one was being worked on, so we were told to go to this other gate and we got on. As soon as all of us were on and they played the automated cabin anouncement, we were told to get our stuff and get off cause this one was having problems, so we got off and went to another gate and waited there for about a hour and a half until they said that the first CRJ we were supposed to have was fixed and we went there and got on and ended up going to HOU after all, so yes I have been in on a CRJ twice but when I come back to Chicago this will be my third! Big thumbs up

When I get back I will have a long trip report to tell!!!

Yes, many times. In a couple of previous jobs, I flew extensively on business thru-out Canada. There was one CP 320 that I flew on 4 times, another 3 times. Several CP 732, 763 and AC 762, 722 I have flown on the same tail # twice.

Also 3 different UA 732's I flew on twice each. For some reason, UA always flew their old non-advanced 732's on ORD-MEM even as the fleet dwindled to just a few aircraft.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

If you live on an island and depend on scheduled flights to get anywhere else, you most likely travel on the same plane more than twice.
I had the following planes at least twice but most likely much more than twice and I have excluded the many AA 757's that fly to SJU, MIA and JFK and the Winair twinotters that connect the Islands or the list would have been too long. Likewise you recognize the crew.

PJ-SEF - SEG and SEH (ALM - MD80)
PH-BUO - BUW - BUR - BUU (KLM B743)
F-GTDI - (AOM D10 - crashed in the mean time)
F-GETA - (Air France B742)
F-GLZP - GLZR (Air France A343)

Vanguard Airlines 737-200 N125NJ (twice)
Vanguard Airlines 737-200 N912MP (twice)
Vanguard Airlines 737-200 N126NJ (twice)
Vanguard Airlines MD-82 N130NJ (thrice)
Vanguard Airlines MD-87 N132NJ (twice)
Vanguard Airlines MD-83 N131NJ (twice)
Vangaurd Airlines MD-82 n141NJ (twice)

I flew an HP 737-300 MCI-PHX and back. It was the same aircraft, but I have since lost the number since I moved to BDL.

Yeah I used to take an airline based in GSO (my hometown) called Eastwind ALL the time. I flew them a bunch from Greensboro to Trenton, NJ to get to boarding school....on some weekeds I would fly home. Anyway, since they only had maybe 5 airplanes in the whole fleet I went on all 5 at least more than twice! LOL

I can think of four occasions in which this happend.

In 2001, a plane swap in Havana back to Cancun for the same IL-62 I flew in on instead of a YAK-42D

Yep. Since EVA Air seems to fly the same two 747-400s very often from Taipei to LAX. I've been on B-16401 and B-16402 too many times.

In my 20+years in the airline industry, Ive had to travel hundreds of times.
Ive been on lots of aircraft more than a few times.
AA B727-100 & 200's probably 40-50 duplicates
AIRTRAN Nearly every DC-9 and B737
BA B744 G-CIVA,G-CIVB,G-CIVC,G-CIVG
B742 G-BDXL,G-BNLO
GARUDA B742 3B-NAS, DC10 PK-GIA,PK-GIB,PK-GIC,PK-GID,PK-GIE,PK-GIF
MD-11 PK-GIG,PK-GIH,PK-GII,PK-GIJ,PK-GIK,EI-CDK, EI-CDI
Many others to numerous to list.
The best same crew stories I have are about Airtran.
I was flying them so much that the crews got to know me by name
and seat choice.
In 2001 I flew from LAS to LAX on Southwest with a Dead heading
HA Captain. The funny thing was he was the captain for my flight from
LAX to OGG that day and also the return from OGG to LAX 6days later!

I've been on several planes at least twice, but let me confine my reponse to two instances when I flew the same aircraft on a single roundtrip excursion:

(1) Air Florida DC-10CF, N1035, Alison
JFK-LGW and return, July 1983

Very nice airplanes; excellent service on both. Both planes are still flying after a quarter century faithful service.

I used to do the same thing as ChrisNH. I would record every tail # I had been on. At the time, in the 90's, I was traveling SDF - EWR every week and it usually involved an aircraft change in PIT, CLT or DCA. So, I did have several dupes on the DC-9 aircraft.

I have since lost my list but I do remember that I had actually flown on the DC-9 that crashed in CLT during the thunderstorm.

I travel less now and have stopped keeping track of the tail #'s. But I should start again, would be fun to see if any more duplicates come up.

Cheers,
John

Tips for those who have logged flights (or wish to start), I use JP Airline Fleet Books as my bible. Too expensive to buy every year (for me, at least), I'd get them every 4-5 years and in the little squares next to each aircraft listing, I would fill in that square with a red marker. I'd mark another red box next to the first one for those aircraft I've been on twice (or three) times.

I also have made an Excel spreadsheet of my flights. At 300+ flights under my belt it is convenient to do a 'sort' in the 'aircraft registration' column so it's easy to see planes I've been on more than once.

Thanks to logging registrations, one final note of interest that I realized soon after it happened: I flew on the United Airlines DC-10 that crashed in Iowa only a month before it went down. Since the problem that caused the DC-10 to go down (a cracked fan blade in #2 engine) was a chronic one that had stayed with the aircraft for a long time, this accident gave me a bit of pause.

I used JP also! Blue highlighter for the aircraft I've been on listed under the airline I flew it on; yellow highlighter when it moves to a new carrier.

ChrisNH:

Also check the reg. #'s for the UAL 757's you were on...I think one of them might have been the one flying as UA93 on 9/11. I think it was N508UA or N518UA. I could be wrong, but I remember seeing that plane posted on this website.

As for me: United named two of their 747-200's after a CEO (William A. Patterson) and a board member (Justin Dart). I flew on these two 747's on many occaisions, mostly between SFO and HNL, but also flew on the "Patterson" also between LHR-SFO on 6/28/91, with an emergency fuel stop in SEA. Given what an positive influence and inspiration Patterson was for United (they sure could use him today!) UAL named one if its newer 744's after him, once the 742 was retired.

In July, 26th, 1997, I went with my family to the Terceira Island, in Azores from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil by TAP Air Portugal. That trip had two stages: Rio to Lisbon and Lisbon to Terceira. The flights from Rio to Lisbon are equipped with A340. The flights from Lisbon to Terceira normally are equipped with smaller planes (B737, A310, A320, etc.). That day, for my surprise, we took the same A340 from GIG to LIS and from LIS to TER. I noted that by the name of the bird: TAP names its planes as the same way KLM does.

I also flew on a 21-day around-the-world flight on TWA back in 1970. We had the same flight crew the entire trip from JFK-ATH-TLV-BOM-BKK-HKG-HNL! It was really fun comparing what they did in each of those cities with what we had done! By the end of the trip, we were buying small presents for the "stews" (as they were called back then) and they were doing the same for us!

I flew the same plane twice in one day...
Korean Air A330-300 HL7702..
Korean Air has about 18 A330s, and many of them operate the SEL-CJU flight I was on.

Here's mine

Srilankan Airlines

4R-ADA 3 times
4R-ADB 6 times
4R-ADC 5 times
4R-ALA 2 times
4R-ALC 3 times

Considering there are only 3 A340's and 4 A330's in service the odds are much greater!! Especially for the 340's used on the LHR-CMB route!

BA G-BNLI 2 times
G- CIVI 2 times

PK-GAA (A300), about 3x
PK-GFS (F28), about 5x
9V-SJJ (A343), about 3x
9V-SMH (B744), 2x is what I remembered.
PK-VCD (C402B), too many times to count!

As to crew I remember from the previous flight... I flew with Kartika Airlines CGK-SRG-CGK, no crew change! Big grin Same nice gal that gave me drinks... plus the nice long chat on the ground.
As to individual crew member... but as to flight attendants...
SQ: 1 gal I flew with 2x... good friend of mine. Another case was the same girl served my cabin section 3x in 4 weeks SIN-FRA and FRA-SIN, then met her again on CGK-SIN...

On a closing note, I went SIN-BKK-CPH on an SK B762, because the flight was delayed, they doubled up a flight to go CPH-LHR and used the same 762 because too many pax were connecting. I didn't realise until the captain announced... "For those pax joining us from Singapore and Bangkok, YES, this IS the same plane!"

Gotta love the SAS flight deck over the P/A Big grin

Wow...I never made the connection between the UA 757 that went down in Pennsylvania on 9/11 and any of the 757s I noted above. In total I've been on about 20 different UA 757s, with those listed above being the ones I had been on twice or three times. Thanks in advance for any clarification on the 9/11 UA 757.

I've been many times on the same aircraft. Mostly on US Airways Shuttle A319/320s. Few years ago I was doing mile runs with them and some crew members were laughing that I should work with them because its 3rd time they welcoming me onboard that day.

Another time I was flying in the morning CO from DCA to EWR to pickup my mother. She was coming on LOT from WAW and in the evening we took flight back to DCA. The flight crew was the same and they recognized me  Smile

Besides that I was twice on LOTs 767-200ER SP-LOA "City of Gniezno" WAW-JFK-WAW.

Yes. And maybe someone can answer a question for me.

For some reason in 2001 we consistently got one of two (?) British Airways Asia 744's on the HOU-->LGW run on a weekly basis. I thought this odd, because:

1. Shouldn't it be flying to Taiwan?
2. Why would it be scheduled on a Gatwick run when Taipei service is from Heathrow?

Was it a matter of the aircraft being retired from 'Asia' service...but had not yet been painted in mainline colours?

I'm curious because I think I flew the damn thing about a dozen times in three months....

Thank you for your replies.

My twist of luck a few years ago. I was flying Delta from OKC to ATL to TOL. We were running about an hour late out of OKC that my connection in ATL was chopped down to 20 minutes. So I went running off the plane only to stop in my tracks at the gate area. I turned around and looked at the monitor behind the gate agent and noticed that the plane I came in on was going back out to TOL. It wasn't a direct flight...but it might as well have been.  Smile

I don't typically pay much attention to the registration numbers of the planes I fly on, but when it's a specially-painted aircraft, it's easy to remember when you've flown on it. I used to get the Delta 767-200 "Spirit of Delta" on a regular basis between DFW and FLL. I don't travel that route any more, but it's still fun to spot this plane at other airports while traveling. The last time I saw it was in Detroit.

When I flew from DEN-OKC I stayed for a week. I flew on UA 737's twice and I had the same crew back home.

Three times on BA Concorde G-BOAF, the last of it's type built, also the prototype of the tank-liner mod in 2001.
