Lufthansa And The Nazis

Mon Dec 13, 1999 11:23 am

I was watching a show on Speedvision and they were talking about Lufthansa's fleet in the 30s. They showed some of their planes while flying and there was a swastica(Nazi symbol) on the tail? Did the Nazi party own Lufthansa while they were in power?

The Nazis eventually had control of every company in Germany whether that company liked it or not. They took control for national defense reasons. Anybody who said no got a lovely vacation in one of the lovely little camps. The U.S. airlines of the day were pressed into service in the Air Transport Command. So yes, Lufthansa, Diamler, Junkers, etc. did what they were told, which doesn't mean that the people in that company agreed with it. Much like the way Singer Sewing Machines built guns for the U.S. durning the war. It is more interesting to note that American Airlines used to code share with the Nazi Zeppelin, Hindenburg. That was in 1936 and 1937.

But I never heard about the nazi symbol on the airplane's tails. I hope this was not the case.

Take a look at Zeppelin Hinderberg photoes and promotion posters. Also, find some books in library on neoclassicism in 20 century art history.

You'll see that official art was integral part of German society, much like socialist realism was in Russian/Soviet one. It doesn't have anything to do with the airline's decesion but rather totalitarian regime paradigm.

If current U.S. aviation law required a U.S. Flag on the tail of every aircraft operated for hire here, then that is exactly what you would see here. Same for Germany in the 1930s.

1)This is an aviation forum not modern history
2) Nazi germany was not a totalitarian society, read one of the revisionist historians on the subject, and get your facts straight
