Update: Concorde´s Ground Transport In Germany

Wed Jul 16, 2003 9:16 pm

Hi everybody,

I had promised to keep you up to date about F-BVFB´s journey from FKB to the Sinsheim museum.

Our local newspapers are reporting the following timeline:

FRIDAY, July 18
0800 - Concorde is loaded on a trailer
1300 - the trailer leaves FKB
1500 - arrival at the Rhine near Soellingen (the village in which FKB is technically located) and transfer from trailer to barge
1900 - the barge departs, passes a nearby watergate and overnights past that watergate

SATURDAY, July 19
0800 - the barge departs and travels a good 50 kilometres down the Rhine, to Altlussheim, where it arrives at 1230
1400 - Concorde is transferred from the barge to a trailer
2000 - the trailer departs for the Autobahn, having to travel via smaller streets for about 3 kilometres
2200 - the trailer reaches the Autobahn

SUNDAY, July 20
0600 - the trailer reaches the Sinsheim museum (situated right next to the Autobahn) after travelling on the A61 to the Hockenheim intersection and on the A6 onwards.

Hope this helps.

I guess I´ll go to Altlussheim and watch the transfer from the barge to the trailer truck. Judging by the schedule, that must be one of the more challenging parts.

Gordon, don't worry!

Given the ongoing hot weather without much rain, she won't sink deep...probably not more than washing the fuselage a bit Big grin
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

Hi,

I was at Altlussheim yesterday, where she was transferred from the Rhine onto the road - and what an awesome experience it was!

I spent the whole afternoon there, having arrived the at around 1330 I first watched the roll-off at around 1500.

Then, she was lowered to nearly ground level - amazing: I had been able to secure an access pass, so I could stroll around her wherever I wanted. It is quite an impressive and rare sight to have a Concorde lying in front of you, her nose tip at the height of your waist. Or to have a direct look into the empty engines. Or to have your picture taken underneath Concorde, assuming a fake weightlifter´s position  Wink/being sarcastic

I then watched the first 90-degree-curve being taken at around 2030 and left.

This morning, I went to the Sinsheim museum: she had arrived in the morning as planned and was now hanging suspended from two giant cranes. The wheels were about 20 cm from the ground, then she was lowered to finally stand "on her own" again.

Now she will be spruced up and of course re-assembled before being put on the museum´s roof.

Yes:

go to http://www.museum-sinsheim.de , follow "Die Concorde kommt ins Museum", then "Transport-Route". On the map which then opens, you can click on the dots to see pics.

Also, many at http://www.planepictures.net , just search for f-bvfb.
