Air India: New Livery Or Old One Better?

Thu Jul 17, 2003 3:45 am

Hey! The thought just came to me that the old Air India livery, to me, looked more appealing than the new one. The old one consisted of a red stripe with a golden spoke in the middle, a white body, and "Air India" written on the body in an authentic manner. The new one has more red, but the authentic feel is gone. I think that the best livery would be the old one, with perhaps a red stripe running along the body, bordered by gold to match the tail. What do you guys think? Here are a couple pictures of the old/new liveries, respectively:

there is no "new" livery.... it was revolted against and cancelled in short order.

That was AI new look that was rejected so they reverted to their 'old' palace windows livery which is showing its age since ages, but I guess nostalgic "Babus" as member Jaysit calls them want to hold on to it for ever, it definitely must be reminiding them of simpler times in India.

I liked the rejected livery but would have preferred it with some changes.

they are both extremely unappealing IMHO, but the one with the funny windows and grey belly tops my list of worst colour schemes of all time.

I sort of agree with you Angelairways ... it's not exactly the most "appealing" livery around  Smile

L.1011 - I think the pictures in the links you provided are great! These pictures both portray authenticity and a modern look, which is what many airlines nowadays have.

I disagree actually. I think Air India has one of the most interesting liveries around. I really like it.

They're both hideous. But if I had to choose, it would be the "new" one.

I also agree that it's nice, but I think if the airline took the older scheme and applied it to a more modern body, an even better livery would be produced - not that I'm saying the current one is bad, but a newer one would compete well with other airlines' newer, more appealing liveries.

Air India's palace window livery is, perhaps, the only really good thing about the airline. With just a slight update in the right hands, it could be contemporarized brilliantly. But then the Babus who run the airline would take 20 years to carve up the proceeds from the painting subcontractors in order to make a fast buck before that could ever happen.

The scheme designed by Puck are nice, especially the logo, however thw 'palace windows' are barely noticeable, the Green also needs to go and the font used for the titles could be better.

I'm glad the "new" Air India paint job was rejected. As much as I like the current trend toward "Euro-white" planes, and as ancient-looking as the Air India corporate identity is, I really do like it. The "Palace Windows" are so unique and the look is reflective of India and respectful of the culture. I agree that the look has been dated for quite sometime, but I just cannot picture Air India with any other look.

Now the color scheme that L.1011 provided in those links - I could definitely get used to that. It is modern and flashy, yet retains the classic feel of the current look. But agree that the "Palace Windows" need to be more obvious.

Air-India could do so much more...when I think of India, I think 'colour', especially the spices and the textiles - how about some gold, saffron, sari colours?

I hate the palace windows in red; in gold against a saffron, scarlet and pink background they would be stunning.

I guess the palace window motif is a love 'em or hate 'em affair. I love them and am glad the "new" livery was rejected. The A. Fischer renderings are nice...I'm glad he (she?) kept the palace window theme and agree with Mike77 and Baldguy that they should be a bit more in contrast with the base color...Jack
