Why Don`t EVA Air Fly To/From Germany?

Thu Jul 17, 2003 4:26 am

My cousin who is currently on a business trip through Asia called me earlier this evening from Taipei. We had a nice chat and of course we talked also about his flight with EVA Air from Paris to Taipei, he told me that the service in their "Super Business Class" was excellent.

Now I am asking myself why EVA doesn`t fly from Germany to Taipei? Germany (especially the Dusseldorf area) has a huge Taiwanese community and a lot of Taiwanese companies, I can imagine that they would operate successful. Is there any special reason why they don`t offer flights from Germany?

Is that a question of bilaterals? Are there any European countries to which both CI and Eva operate? Since LH doesn't fly to Taiwan at all, maybe the Taiwanese side can only designate one carrier.
About DUS, the runway would never allow nonstops... from FRA, I think CI's TPE is the one with the longest blocktime, as it has to avoid a certain airspace.

Hello Konstantin,

now when you mentioned it, I think also that there is no European country where both Taiwanese airlines operate to, maybe the Taiwanese site can really designate only one airline from their country.

Of course I never thought about a BR flight from DUS, FRA would be possible with shuttle busses like JL and KE have, a flight from MUC would be also possible with connecting flights to several other German airports with LH.

Yes, both Eva Air and China Airlines fly to The Netherlands (Amsterdam). Eva flies 4 weekly with 74E and China Airlines daily with 744. Odly enough all 18 flights between Amsterdam and Taipeh fly via Bangkok.

Thanks for your reply LJ, than there must be an other reason why EVA don`t serve Germany, really strange.

FRA-TPE is nonstop, so maybe AMS-TPE is just those few miles too far...
But historically, it seems the Netherlands have been at the forefront of Taiwan ops - note no P.R.C. serves AMS (IIRC)...

The stop in BKK on the AMS flights must have an other reason, CDG-TPE is also nonstop and it is a little bit longer than to AMS.

FRA-TPE: 5832 mi
AMS-TPE: 5879 mi
CDG-TPE: 6092 mi

Great pictures, Konstantin!

I like it when airlines have a livery which is easy to identify from the ground.

Patrick, here the great circle routes maybe don't help, as Taiwanese carriers have to take a huge detour, and that may make it shorter from CDG than AMS (as the aircraft take a southern routing I think).

Ah, you are correct, the Great Circle Mapper don`t consider that Taiwanese carrier must avoid Chinese airspace. My cousin told me about the strange routing via Scandinavia, Russia, Siberia, North Korea, South Korea and finally over a small part of Japan into TPE, a big detour.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that he flew last year also on BR from CDG to TPE, as you mentioned, on the southern routing but this time it was a polar flight, maybe beacause some parts of the Iraq and Afghanistan airspace is closed for commercial aviation.

Now I wanted to know why both Taiwanese carriers serve AMS, I thought that The Netherlands are acknowledge Taiwan as a country but according to my "Spiegel Almanach" are Macedonia and the Vatican the only countries who have diplomatic relationship with Taiwan.

@ Patrick:
>>than there must be an other reason why EVA don`t serve Germany, really strange.<<

No, there is probably no other reason. Since we don't have the EU-wide Air Service Agreements yet, it is very probable that the German-Taiwanese ASA only designates one carrier (i.e. China Airlines) while the Dutch-Taiwanese ASA is more open (double designation, or even more liberal? Do CI and BR have 5th freedom rights between AMS and BKK?)

Best regards,

Thomas

Sabena 332,

In fact you can also add Costa Rica and Panama as countries with diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
PTY had a BR service until a couple of years ago.

Patroni:

Yes, EVA Air does have fifth freedom rights from BKK to AMS, LHR, and VIE. You can book those flights directly on their website. I'm not too sure about China Airlines, but I'm guessing that they do too.

I am pretty certain EVA doesn't fly to Taiwan because of bilateral limitations. The Netherlands and Taiwan amended their bilaterals in the mid-1990s so both EVA and China Airlines could serve Holland. That's also the time when KLM became "KLM Asia" when flying to Taipei. Taiwan has enormous obstacles whenever it tries to open up new airlinks, because of Communist China. In the early 1990s, Balkan Bulgarian started flying to Taipei, but that lasted maybe 2 flights. Similarly, Egypt cancelled China Airlines' rights to Cairo after only the route had been served for less than 6 months in 1989/90.

Currently (not considering SARS cancellations), the only country Taiwan has direct air links and diplomatic ties with is Palau. Far Eastern has been flying its 757s to Koror. A Palau company has also leased Mandarin's 738 for that route.

On a separate note, Macedonia no longer maintains ties with Taiwan. The 27 countries that recognize Taiwan are:

Belize
Burkina Faso
Chad
Costa Rica
Dominica
Dominican Republic
El Salvador
Gambia
Grenada
Guatemala
Haiti
Holy See (Vatican)
Honduras
Liberia
Malawi
Marshall Islands
Nicaragua
Palau
Panama
Paraguay
St. Kitts & Nevis
St. Vincent & the Grenadines
Sao Tome & Principe
Senegal
Solomon Islands
Swaziland
Tuvalu

For the record, Lufthansa did fly to Taipei- remember the Condor 747-400?
