Best And Worst F/A Uniforms

Fri Jul 18, 2003 9:45 am

What's the best flight attendant uniform you've ever seen?

The worst?

(and may I suggest airliners.net add a Uniform photos section - until then visit my friend Cliff at http://www.uniformfreak.com !)

The best I would say belongs to the following Airlines
-Air India
-Saudi Arabian Airlines
-Virgin Atlantic Airways
-Sri Lankan
-MAS (female uniform)
Worst would belong to
-Alot of airlines have horrible f/a uniforms especially int the US were every airline (exceptions would be ATA, DELTA, JetBLue) seems to have generic uniforms.

SQ flight attendants have stunning dresses with cool designs (Batik?). Air India flight attendants also dress really nicely.

My best votes go to those airlines with representations of their ethnicity:

Thai
SIA
MAS
Garuda
Air India
Indian Airlines (not the overweight mamas, I only mean the uniform)
Gulf Air
JAL used to have a kimono service

The worst would have to be:

British Airways... grandmother's curtains comes to mind.

Northwest comes a close second with regards to those that the junior FAs wear. However, the senior ones with the business suits looks smart.

Swiss Air Lines... remember my trip report about their crumpled uniforms? No pride at all. And they aim to be like SIA... C'mon!

Ethnicity is definately good. However, I seem to prefer profesionalism. Some charter op's have nice clasy ones. But wait, isn't the important part inside the uniform?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Was there any truth to rumor about an airlines asking to FA's to wear thongs to eliminate a pantyline?

I'd have to say that both Aloha and Hawaiian Airlines have great F/A uniforms. Both are colorful and have a great 'Hawaii' look, but still look professional. Hawaiian is a purple print on white, while Aloha's is a green-blue print with birds of paradise flowers on it. There are picture's of Hawaiian's on that website, but the one labeled as current is not current. Their uniforms look more like the "muu muu" one.

Yeah Emirates, LOT's isn't so bad.

Best:
LH
Air Polonia
LOT (!)

In the worst category:
Austrian Airlines (the red is terrible)
BA (the pattern on the stewardesses blouses)
Alitalia (the green jackets)
How much A is there is Airliners Net ? 0 or nothing ?

The best uniform used to be Southwest.
All female's in hot pants and go-go boots......
I was 15 years old when I first flew on WN, man
did I enjoy that aisle seat  Smile !!

PSA also had some wild looking uniforms with hot pants
and go-go boots in the 70's also. I think their's were
purple outfits with red boots.....nice !!

DL's uniforms are very professional and nice-looking. Check them out in the link below! (Yes, that is me sitting with 4 DL F/A's in the aft galley jumpseats on N182DN flying out to SAN last summer).

THAI is the best. I love those beautiful, ethinic silk dresses!

Along with SQ's Sarong dress and Cathay's red uniform.

The Worst one is probably AMERICAN AIRLINES...

I think the best uniforms has to go to Hooters Air, hands down (but not down the pants).
OK, so the two Hooters girls are technically not F/As but who cares? As far as I am concerned, they are part of the cabin staff and they fit the bill for this question.

Sorry for not replying sooner.

I have flown LOT Polish Airlines just one year ago and the uniform was not that bad. I was referring to the one on the website. It is not very nice. That said, the current LOT Polish Airlines uniform is nothing special, but by no means is it one of the best.

I think the best uniforms are those that look very professional. Lufthansa and Emirates both have those types. Another great one is American Airlines.

I found PIA's last uniform better than the present one, it was from 1975 to 1986, the only modification it got was that the shirt length was increased to just below the knees in the 80's.

All those of you who love Singapore unis, I'm going to hurt your feelings; I hate them - they don't look like a uniform at all to me! The neckline is too low and the print is tiring used in both pieces...plus they have to wear bizarre little sandals. Give me a navy suit and some white gloves any day!

My personal favourites:

Qantas from the 80s (designed by St Laurent)
British Airways ditto (by Roland Klein)
BEA 1960s designed by Hardy Amies
Braniff 1965 designed by Pucci (yes, I'll eat my earlier words about prints)
The current Virgin set

And worst:
Almost any US major, especially Northwest and American
MALEV (green and blue, nightmarish)
Anything with a 1980s bow blouse!

I have always liked Hawaiian. It really reflects the islands and their culture. No other US carrier has that. I also like jetBlue and Delta's uniform. I think the worst is Northwest's and Iberia's. Does anyone know where I can find a picture of the new ATA uniforms?? I would really like to see them.

The best looking uniforms in my opinion are the Pierre Balmain designed sarong-kebayas for the Singapore Girls.

The short salwar-kameez used by AI's F/As are also culturally appropriate and practical. The elegant dupatta scarf added an extra touch.

Thai's also celebrate cultural heritage, are beautiful and practical.

Alitalia's in olive green and dark blue designed by Giorgio Armani are classical and, according to a friend, make their crews look intimidatingly elegant.

Gulf Air's Balenciaga adaptation of the Muslim headdress and smart trousers are very pretty .

TAM's navy blue suits with details in cherry red look very nice.

Among the worse :

SAS besides plain and ill fitting , look like they were bought in a discount store.

Olympic's are very ugly too, F/As look like they are wearing pajamas.

To my friend who recalled the Pucci designed uniforms for the Braniff Babes : Do you remember the plexigas bubble helmet they wore ? It was before air-bridges were in use.

PIA's old uniform posted above and Air India's shalwar kameez version are very similar, I wonder who copied whom? because AI's main unifiorm is the 'Saree', the PIA one above was designed by a British designer.

I also find Singapore Airlines uniform neckline too shabby for a top notch carrier that they are, the girls look more like 'Ama's' or maids as they're called in Singapore, I hope SQ will get some more professional styles in the future also its become too old, they should go western now.

Did Thai also have an alternate western style uniform? I saw it in the late 70's, infact some of the crew changed from the Sarong to the western unifor m onboard from a flight from Singapore to Bangkok for an onward service to Tokyo. It was printed shirt with Black Skirt.

My favorite flight attendant uniforms are those of DELTA and ALITALIA. I am also partial to KLM's, because they are the ones that I have always spotted most frequently at various airports. I always keep an eye out for those stunning blue uniforms.

The worst are those of most other airlines, especially US domestic airlines and British Airways.

I also don't care for that Singapore Airlines look. It makes me feel like I am in a sushi bar or something.

I agree with Baldguy, the SQ uniforms are hideous, they dont look smart at all, more like they are wearing some flowery curtains, or pyjamas!
