Is SWA Expanding In DTW?

Fri Jul 18, 2003 10:42 am

I had lunch with a top airline executive and he said SWA was talking about trippling their flights from DTW over the next five years. Has anyone heard about this?

I hope that's true, my family is forced to fly Northwest and they hate it. and I do too. Southwest would help break up Northwest's lock on that airport.
Next time try the old "dirty Sanchez" She'll love it !!!

Are you sure they meant SWA?? Spirit has said they'd like to triple their size at DTW within the next 5 years Southwest has generally made no indications of this. Then again, people will make a statement that WN will triple their service at any of their existing cities.

Much of this is dependent on the rebuild of the Davey terminal. I doubt much will happen in the old dive. Its hard to believe WN will create such a build-up where they are going against the likes of Spirit on their turf. Also, in many instances NW will price-match both of them.

I don't know if you read the story, but DTW and MSP are among the two most profitable hubs in the country. Which means if SWA triples service here, they could change the market economics here.

I'm not going to doubt whether or not WN will expand more, but what I can see is maybe a few more STL flights. I really don't see a massive influx of STL flights just because AA pulled out. WN and NW may be looking at the "less seats=higher fare" idea. Fare wise, STL just isn't that great for revenue (walk-up fare of $152 at times at AA)?

Like PSU.DTW.SCE, I see NK wanting more action soon.

"Profitable" is a poor term -- not much is profitable for NW (or most other airlines, for that matter) these days. Both DTW and MSP command among the top "hub premiums" for NW, which basiclly means they bend over passengers (fare wise) who live in the DTW and MSP areas.

DTW suffered among the heaviest cuts by WN post-9/11... they added daily nonstop service to PHX in April and seasonal weekend service to MCO and TPA earlier this year. Year-round weekend service to LAS begins this fall.

I'd look for WN to restore flights to MDW, STL, BNA and perhaps increase service to PHX, LAS, MCO and TPA over the next several years -- maybe we'll see nonstop service to BWI. But a massive expansion? Highly, highly doubtful.

Southwest and Spirit aren't going much on each others turf since MCO and TPA are the only cities both airlines serve at the same time.
