Yesterday I was on N849AT, from JAX to ATL. In ATL, I saw two of them parked at the end of Concourse C. I saw another one at a gate, and another one landed when I was taxiing out on a 717 leaving ATL. I have heard there are five left. If that is true, I saw all of them yesterday.

Bob, I was in ATL yesterday also. July 17. What time were you there, and will you be there on the 21st?

One is being kept parked over on the ramp by the former NWA MX hangar.

Currently, there are six operating DC-9's. Ship #'s 933, 936, 937, 947, 948, and 949 are all operating revenue flights today. The cities that still see regular DC-9 service are GSO, RDU, JAX, PIT, CAK, TPA, MCO, DAY, IAD, MSY, and MEM. Hope this helps!

I was in ATL from around 2:30 to 5:30, flying JAX-ATL-PHF. I wish I'd known you were there. On the 21st, I'll be at home. My next trip is on the 29th on NW. By the way, the seats are so much more comfortable on the DC-9, but seat pitch seems to be less than in the 717. I was in 11F, and the seat in front of me was practically in my face. I really like the DC-9 interior design.

Thanks a lot! When the North American Airlines Handbook was published (3rd Edition) they still had 33 with only 27 717s with the 717 fleet eventually toataling 53!

James, Any word on the date of the last revenue flight for the DC9 is, and where it is heading from and to? I look forward to flying it. I hope to know at least 3 weeks in advance..

Actually there are only three DC-9s left in the AirTran fleet that operate for revneue service and this information comes from Jack Smith director of AirTran operations.
Next month in August, another 9 is scheduled to be retired...leaving two DC-9's then anther is sheduled to be retired in September leaving one DC-9 then sometime in October the third and final DC-9 will be removed from the AirTran revenue schedule, I learned all this info this past Thursday while I was in ATL for a C.I. class, I was up in ATL all day this day I personnaly only saw one DC-9 in the eight hours I was in ATL and that one tail was at the end of C. So not sure what everyone saw with five AirTran DC-9s flying around unless they rose from the dead..not sure...maybe a charter service er something....
The DC-9's are getting harder to find, with AirTran's fleet anyway...

AirTran has a habit of keeping DC-9s around that are *not* in service, but can take over a flight if one of the others goes down. They had 13 (officially) last October, but six of them were parked, kept around, "Just in case."

No disrespect meant to a fellow employee, but this entire post should be disregarded. First, Jack Smith is the Senior Vice President of Customer Service. Sonny Smithwick is the SOC (Operations) Director.

Now, as far the DC-9's...it is hard to believe that you saw only one DC-9. To be more thorough, I will provide routing information for our SIX DC-9's for the evening of 7/19.

Ship 934: 84 ATL-GSO > 1719 GSO-ATL > 1798 ATL-RDU > 1717 RDU-ATL

Ship 936: 124 TPA-ATL > 62 ATL-IAD > 59 IAD-ATL > 1787 ATL-GSO

Ship 937: 209 CAK-ATL > 937 ATL-JAX > 1796 JAX-ATL > 731 ATL-MCO

Ship 947: 289 ATL-HOU > 287 HOU-ATL > 1723 ATL-MEM

Ship 948: 738 MCO-ATL > 702 ATL-DAY > 709 DAY-ATL

Ship 949: 95 RDU-ATL > 297 ATL-HOU > 298 HOU-ATL > 129 ATL-TPA

As was stated, these routings are valid for 7/19 from 1500-2359. If you'd like you can use the GA-14 screen available in CMS to verify that these tails are still in full revenue service on a daily basis. I personally saw all six (6) aircraft myself as I worked in the C-tower this afternoon/evening. They're not dead yet.

Groundstop has the most correct information, I work with the DC-9's out of RDU everyday. RDU will have them flying in and out till near the end of August.
They're old, but still fairly reliable considering their age.

So, my entire responce should be disregarded huh, thats cool, but I would say how its funny first of all how so many people are quick to discount any information I provide on this forum, for starters I knew a good month in advance of the airplane AirTran would go with the 737/8 a good month before it was announced, of course, people dismissed it and said I had no clue what I was talking about...in addition I work with AirTran airways...in PNS we do in fact have one DC-9 flight a day 1711/424 so I know that the DC-9's are around, but trust me when I say there are probably only three of them left, I am member of the AirTran agent council we meat once a month with Jack Smith and other top management and yes he is director of operations, why else would he himself have a conferance call with all 43 station managars every morning at 0800, a meeting that many managers call the dreadful hour, ie.bag leftoffs the biggest issue with Smith, I trust Jack Smith and the information that he provided us....also in addition Greg Curtis spoke with us last Thursday about new baggage handling procedures that will be coming out effective August 5th, due to a new load plan procedure that will be going into effect...the DC-9's will have to be restricted even more and carry less pax and thus certain routes will have to be reconsidered and looked at, based on needs...
so I think I am a little knowledgable about what is going on..as I get information from the top every month, they are in the drivers seat and if you cannot believe them well...not sure who you can believe.
P.S. I was in ATL 17Jul03 not 19Jul03 arrived on 1720 at approxmately 0815 pulled into D7 I believe and was at the airport till about 1215 when we left for the training center, I saw only one DC-9 while there, and then left on 423...they ARE getting harder to find.

Groundstop is right. Just going through my August Bid packet, and the above routings are indeed in place for the month of August. (I always keep an eye peeled for the DC9 trip pairings, as I avoid them like the plague, haha).

JMH,

I believe you were claiming on here "a full month ahead of time", that AirTran was going to get the 737-800 because they painted lines on the ramp. Now you revise this claim to include the 737-700. Go back and see who mentioned it would not be the -800, but the -700. It was not you.

Also, as others have mentioned, Jack Smith is the Sr. VP of Customer Service. There is actually no such position as "Director of Operations". The closest thing to that title might be Klaus Goersch, who is the Vice President of Flight Operations, and who fulfills the duties of a "Director of Operations" as defined in FAR 119.

Finally, the 6 DC-9s still in service, according to the Director of Flying's office are: 934, 936, 937, 947, 948, 949. They post a daily memo on the board which shows the tail numbers of each and every aircraft (B-717 and DC-9) that is in service as of that day, in addition to showing the expected in-service dates of upcoming 717 deliveries.

I'm very confused about how you can say there are only three left? Did you not read my post? There are clearly six DC-9's flying. All six of them flew through ATL yesterday. The routings I had shown for 7/19 were used as an example to prove that all of those routes are run by DC-9's. Many of those flights overlap, and would be impossible to run with anything less than six aircraft. I'm glad that you are on agent council, and a C.I. Its good that you are an involved member of the airline, we need more people like that. However, believe me when I say there are six DC-9's still flying for AirTran.

P.S. Use the GA-14 or run an ATL GA-29. If all six of those tail numbers don't show up somewhere during the course of a day...let me know.

For those who work for Airtran know that things change a lot around here. Not to say Jack in not in the know. The info he got is probably correct. But sometimes 717s break a Dc9 sub is covered, charters, etc.. They do have spares. So it would not surprise me if we use 5 or 6 all the time. I can tell you that the AUG bid packet has 11 regular lines. With reserves its about 20 lines so there are definelity not a lot of 9s scheduled for AUG. Its usually about 5 lines per airplane.

There will be a bunch of guys being forced over the next couple of months from the 9 to the 717. So the 9s are coming to a close and soon.

I've heard rumors that the 9's could be used for charter service after they are retired from regular pax service.
