Is LHR Spotter's Gallery Still Closed?

Sun Jul 20, 2003 6:48 pm

This was shut after some security alerts earlier this year and I was wondering if anyone knew if it was open again yet?
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

Hey Ryanb747,
I started a topic on this a few weeks back, do a search for it. It proved to be quiet interesting and entertaining.
Hope this helps.

The jokers at BAA obviously don't like the idea of employing a single security guard, it won't cost an arm and a leg, while they open more WH Smiths and cosmetics shops airside.

I have to say I also had a great stay around 09L and 27L/27R this week.

LHR rules!

I love the terrace, but didn't really miss it...

I agree with Frederic, I don`t miss the terrace too because there are so many other great spots around LHR.

I miss it, because I live about 2 hours away from LHR by train, and commuting to the airport and then catching a bus/walking to a location around the permeter makes the day a waste of time, as I dont get a long time to spot. One security guard couldnt cost BAA much to employ. I had some good times on that terrace. Also, isnt LHR the biggest airport in the world, it seems a bit pointless that they havnt got one. All of the other main airports in the world have them. I might email BAA soon, and ask for an explanation about this.
What do you all think?

LHR Deck

Sun Jul 20, 2003 11:33 pm

Talking to some Airfield Ops staff at Manchester the other day - Some LHR people were up there looking at how MAN cater for the public, and what lessons they might learn. So at least they're thinking about doing something.

If security was the motive/excuse for closing the deck, I can't think the purposes were helped by closing the deck, because now you have dozens of people exploiting and peering through every nook and cranny, layby etc. Confining them in one good place would be a good idea, but too obvious for them.

It's up to them; if they're happy wasting police resources chasing people away, then so be it, but they should know that discouraging or harassing enthusiasts is counter-productive.

Mmmm, it was great to have a terrace but to be perfectly honest, I didn't think the views from it were amazing...too much stuff in the way, and too far away from the action.

Of course, if there was a petition to reopen it, or construct/open something better, you'd bet I'd sign it - but as has been pointed out above, there really are much better spots really...!

ciao

Airplanepics: waste your whole day with having to take a bus? Once again, the deck is a great place, but it took me 10 minuts a week ago to go from the Central Bus Station with bus 285 to Hatton Cross. Is this a waste of time?

Of course for registration spotting the deck still rules... but via the LHR group, you get full arrival and departure logs, so you only have to write down a/c type and hour if you want a tie up.

its not just that though. With the observation deck, you could go rain or shine. Plus there was a very good shop up there.
If not re-open that one, they should build a new viewing park on the perimeter, surely this would bring a little bit more revenue to the airport, which could be used to update the spotting facilities.

The visitors centre is also a nice option while it is raining, get of one stop before Harlington Corner.
