FLYYUL, yes, it is very welcomed news. If I am not mistaken, Montreal is a bigger O&D market from Miami (MIA/FLL) than Toronto is, and the lack of MIA-YUL service has always been surprising to me. Not to mention the fact that both MIA-YUL flights will be operated by 737-800 equipment, and it is AA's common practice to use 738s on higher-yielding more business oriented flights, as opposed to the MD80s which are used more on leisure flights (like the new IND/PIT/MSP service).

USAirways has reduced service from the Miami metro area to Pittsburgh to four dailies...two to FLL and one each to MIA and PBI.

As for AA's MIA expansion...this is only the beginning. The next two likely destinations, IMO, are Kansas City and Providence. Providence remains the largest O&D market (18th) from the Miami area not served non-stop. Daily M80 would be perfect. Kansas City is the next largest market.

With Providence, a link to Miami means AA passengers in the area can easily connect to Latin America, but, much more importantly, the Caribbean. AA is loosing all those Caribbean passengers from Providence to Delta and USAirways. Same case in Kansas City. Plus with Kansas City loosing all STL service, getting to MIA is much more inconvenient now, especially since one of the STL flights has been running MIA-STL-MCI and back since day one.

Indianapolis, Islip, and Atlantic City are all larger O&D market from Miami than Kansas City, but all have non-stops to FLL (and, well, soon IND will have MIA too). Seattle and San Diego are also TOP-40 markets from MIA that AA does not serve, and have potential. MIA-SEA could handle a second daily with AA to compliment AS service, which has loads averaging over 85% and goes out full in F daily. Manchester, Albany, and Buffalo are also TOP-40 O&D markets, but with AA mainline not at any (AEagle is not even at MHT), I doubt we will see them anytime soon. Those markets are better left to be served by Southwest to FLL.

I would not be surprised to see PHX added soon.MAH4645 do you think that there is a direct coallation between the Port of Miami and MIA?The more cruise ship pax the more expansion AA has out of MIA.

A lot of French-Canadians and former Montrealers live in South Florida. My grandmother used to go back and forth between Miami and Montreal every winter. Needless to say, it's a much bigger market than Toronto is to Miami.

PHX would not surprise me either. Another large market with minimal non-stop service to Miami (daily to MIA, 8w to FLL). Daily 757-200 would work. I don't see a direct correlation, but clearly AA anticipates for passengers and the more cruise ship passengers there are, the more travelers coming to Miami.

The Indianapolis and Minneapolis connections are clearly just a way of finally connecting some more dots.

Definitley. Miami's French Canadian population is the largest outside of Canada. With the additional YUL non-stop, American will actually have more capacity between Miami and Montreal than Miami and Toronto. Air Canada has more MIA-YYZ service than MIA-YUL (3x YYZ/1x YUL), but it is the reverse at FLL (1x YYZ/3x YUL), plus FLL also has the only mainline jet transborder service from YQB (then there is also MIA-YVR and FLL-YOW with AC; and rumour is TS will be introducing MIA-YYC/YEG for the winter).

Actually, they will still operate the same number of daily flights, 24, with the new scheduled despite the MIA addition.

OHhh, but they're still going to have problems. Recently I've seen up to 5 AA planes at MSP at once! They have 2-3 gates I think. Many have to park on the other side of the airport! I can't wait to give AA a try on July 31 to LGA!

US Airways' PIT-MIA is down to one 737-400 a day. A few years ago it was around four a day, using aircraft like 757's. Actually, the only time I've flown a 757 was a few years ago on US Airways...MIA-PIT.

AA's MD-80 should do well.

The Indianapolis corporate crowd is going to love this.

A) They no longer have to fly the cheapo's - ATA and Southwest - to southern Florida.

B) They can go directly into MIA instead of FLL.

C) It's quite the businessman's special - leave in the morning and return at night.
I'm not joking! This is my job!

Continental,

At MSP AA has 3 gates and they have their flights positioned so that they don't need any more. We're losing 6 MD-80 flights to STL, so 5 ERJ's are coming in and service to ORD is decreased, so they'll have no problem. In the early morning, DL, AA, UA, CO, US and others can all have 3+ planes, AA usually in the morning has 5 aircraft at the airport. They use NW gates.

Thanks SESGDL for the info. Yeah, I've seen them parked at the NW gates quite frequently. Hey, I'll probably fly the MSP-MIA route on AA this winter! Anyway, do you think if the route does really good they'll consider upgrading to a 757!?!?

"Miami's French Canadian population is the largest outside of Canada"

Actually I believe it's Maine, lots of French Canadians emigrated to Maine over the years.

Not sure why, but Maine has a substantial French Canadian population.

Now back to Miami...
