Actually, I would blame these legacy routes as why AA
and other airlines are not making money. Certainly there is O&D traffic, but the capacity would be better used pumping them into and out of the hubs.
After all, if your organization is predicated on using the economies-of-scale of a major hub, then using n/s O&D can be counter productive. Besides, hubs and focus cities are more flexible than non-stops.
