American Airlines will suspend non-stop service between Boston Logan and the West coast markets of Las Vegas, Nevada and San Diego, California this winter. Service to Las Vegas will be suspended between 31 October 2003 and 4 April 2004. Service to San Diego will be suspended 5 January 2004, with no re-start date yet set.

BOS-SAN will probably return next May, if it is even dropped at all. I wouldn't trust these changes quite yet. AA's schedules showed the same thing around this time last year, but as it turned out BOS-SAN was suspended this year from only February to April, and actually upguaged to a 767 throughout December and January.

Jeez, SAN is getting quite a number of it's routes cut....sad, but if it helps the carrier survive, its all good.

Noooo! You know the airlines are in trouble when WN cuts a service from SAN....(we've got so many of them anyway...)

Actually, I would blame these legacy routes as why AA and UA and other airlines are not making money. Certainly there is O&D traffic, but the capacity would be better used pumping them into and out of the hubs.

After all, if your organization is predicated on using the economies-of-scale of a major hub, then using n/s O&D can be counter productive. Besides, hubs and focus cities are more flexible than non-stops.

After all, a few additional flights per day into or out of DEN, DFW, ORD, or STL is not going to terribly overburden most of those airports (well, maybe ORD).
Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it in summer school.

Actually, Elwood, BOS-SAN/LAS are hardly "legacy" routes. BOS-SAN is only about 4 or 5 years old and Las Vegas is about 2 (picked up after Delta's on and off flight was finally dropped). I can't be very surprised at either seeing as SAN had been downgraded to 738s from 757s back in the day, and Las Vegas has always been a low-yield destination.

Hopefully, they'll return soon though.

BOS-LAS isn't even a year old. Launched 15 December 2002.
