WN To Expand In St.Louis, And Add A New City In 04

"Southwest is also looking to scoop up business where its bigger competitors -- strapped with excessive costs -- are cutting back. In a conference call with analysts, Chief Financial Officer Gary Kelly said the decision by American Airlines parent AMR Corp. (NYSE:AMR - News) to cut its St. Louis service in half provides a big opportunity for Southwest to expand even more.

"The St. Louis announcement is very bullish for Southwest Airlines," Kelly said. "We are interested in doing something there."

The announcement seems consistent with Southwest's business practices. They've laid low the past 18 months, connecting some dots and--I suspect-- absorbing the cost of not laying anyone off after 9/11. I'm not sure what else can explain their staying more conservative than usual during the biggest window of LCC growth opportunity in aviation history.

God bless them for not laying anyone off, that's what you can do when you have a good cash situation resulting from a good product. But I still wonder if they should have at the same time still added some markets--JetBlue and AirTran have made big strides and are now much more substantial competitors.

Sounds like STL will be the next BNA for Southwest--AA cuts back, WN jumps in. WN has weathered the impact of 9/11, a network-carrier has cut back heavily at a large market, and they're starting to think growth again. So a net gain of 25 737's in 2004 (17 of the 42 will replace retiring 732's) will help them take up slack at STL, add a new market, and probably still have some a/c left over to connect more dots.

Anyone have any ideas/rumors as to what the "new" city in 2004 will be? The article led me to the impression that WN will be adding STL and another city.

You can say what you want, but I'm holding onto to hope that Gulfport/Biloxi International Airport (GPT/KGPT) is the new WN station. This market is underserved and could prove very favorable to another LCC. Needless to say it wouldn't be a big station, but it would bring GPT more low fare seats, whitch is a good match for this growing liesure market and also good for neighboring business communities w/in an hours drive.

I'm still contemplating possible GPT cities from WN but I think these would be in the mix:

HOU
DAL
BWI
MCO or TPA
WPB or FLL
STL or BNA
possible west coast routes:
LAS
LAX or OAK
PHX

If your read my response last week to the "Which cities will WN serve next" fourm, you know my good reasoning and judgement for operating GPT as a station.

Gee, let me think about the new city... How about Phoenix or Las Vegas. Why not Baltimore? Let's not forget Albuquerque. And while we're at it, let's just throw in Tampa (I'm only kidding, if I am not mistaken, these cities are all hubs for WN  Big thumbs up), however these wouldn't be bad routes out of STL, would they?

Southwest operates no hubs.

I think it said on the website that they have tons of flights going out those cities. You can check at www.iflyswa.com. Who knows, you might be right.

Indeed, you are correct, they have a plethora of flights to BWI, PHX, LAS, etc. However, many flights does not make a destination a hub. Southwest operates a point-to-point system.

Those are crew bases I believe. See Quote from SWA press release dated April 8, 1999. "In addition to the new flight attendant crew base at Baltimore/Washington, Southwest maintains flight attendant crew bases in Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Chicago, and Oakland. Systemwide, the carrier employs more than 5,250 flight attendants." SWA press release dates Feb. 14, 2001 - "The Orlando crew bases will complement Southwest's six current crew bases in Baltimore/Washington, Chicago Midway, Dallas, Houston, Oakland, and Phoenix. The airline employs about 3,000 pilots and 6,000 flight attendants nationwide."
Hope that helps
