GE90 777s, How Powerful Do They Feel?

Thu Jul 24, 2003 8:21 pm

Hello, was just looking at some British Airways 777s in the photos section, and i wondered if abybody here flies them, or has flown as a passenger on them, and, if so, do they feel powerful when takeoff power is applied, and when climbing, etc? Is their power to weight ration comparable to that of a Boeing 757 ? Thankyou

I flew LHR -DXB in a GE-90 powered 777 wouldn't say it was noticeably more powerfull than any other plane I have been on- nice and smooth.

The return was on a Trent powered 777 again didn't seem much different,

Have BA still got the GE 90 thought they were sold to Khalifa

In general terms, when flying the 777 you really have a sensation of huge power. A bit like the A330.
But I must say its more noticable on the 777.

Too many factors.

First, you're not likely to find a carrier operating GE90s at full power... and even if they do, it's only for a few seconds on takeoff.

Also, there are different derations/models... i.e., one of BA's GE90-85B powered 772ERs doesnt have nearly the power of, say, one of DL's Trent892-powered ships or AF's GE90-94B powered birds (the latter currently being the strongest powerplant offered on the 772ER)

No silly ConcordeBoy, the Trent 895 is available on the 772ER, as you know.

Wrong.

Contrary to popular belief (as well as what could be considered false advertising on behalf of RR); the Trent895 is only certified to operate at a maximum of 93,400lbs thrust on the 772ER... not 95,000; making it the second most powerful choice available, after the GE90-94B at 93,700lbs thrust.

If you want to feel some power, climb aboard a 717, while a completely different class of airplane from that of a 777,
the 717 clearly has some powerful engines...simply put it truly halls donkey in a relatively short distance and from what I understand, at least on AirTran 71's full power is hardly ever used, there is an extra bust that can be used in high altititude climates....Ill tell you, I cant imagine what that extra boost must be like, because with "partial" power alone, on take off, you struggle to get off the back of your seat...the G forces are oh plenty.

To me, the GE90-94B feels more powerful on take off than 777s with other engines. Just a slight difference, but nocticeable. Very impressive climb also; from take off to 33 000 feet in 10 min when I flew AZ 777 in March this year, from what I can remember.

Take Care

Canadian North's JT8D-24 powered B737-200Adv/Combi you can feel the power while on the short gravel runways, definetly more feeling of power than with the JT8D-9A powered 732s.

Isn't it Emirates who's SOP calls for max thrust on takeoff with the 777? I seem to recall it was one of the gulf carriers, and that they were beginning to have problems with their engines due to the increased wear & tear.

EK "only" uses the Trent890 on its extended range 777s (though the 773As are powered by Trent892)... even at full thrust, may not feel the same as some of the more powerful versions. JMO
