Mesaba ARJ Weight-balance Question

This was bizarre. Yesterday, after taking my assigned seat 5F on a Mesaba ARJ at MSP, the flight attendant told me that, due to weight and balance issues, I and another guy in my row had to move back. The plane was about 50 percent full. Can this be? Or was it that these seats are directly behind business class and they didn't want us to see what was served?

Seat 5F, by the way, is an economy-sized seat, but in a 2x2 row (as opposed to 2X3) and it had a footrest, like in business class. And, now that I think about it, they didn't ask passengers in row 5 to move on the flight to MSP. Any help would be appreciated.

It may very well have been a W/B issue. Despite their feets and size, RJs just don't match up to mainline standards, so the W/B can be of the essence. IT usually gets very complex, but factors could have included how much fuel was onboard, how many bags were in each of the cargo holds, and where pax where sitting. W/ only a 50% load, balance issues can occur, and if there where more people on one side of the plane, or if first class was full, it can add weight and extra pressure on lift off or the the weighted down side of the plane my bend downwards. If the filt had been full and the flt crew and dispatchers felt W/B would be a seouris issue, fuel could be drained, pax rebooked to later flts, or bagage removed and sent to final destinations later on. So don't worry, it wasn't a conspiracy to keep you from evesdropping on first class, it was W/B and safety issues. They do this on Pinnicale Airlink CRJs as well. Overall the where taking good care of you at good ol' NWA.

I figured it was legit, just weird.

Yes, business class was full, so this may have been the reason.

I loved the NWA experience. The new livery looks awesome in person.

Every airplane is prone to weight and balance issues, not only RJs. What you experienced was indeed because of weight and balance. The avro tends to be a bit nose heavy and on occasion we'll get a message from dispatch/load control telling us to move people from certain rows back, or sometimes if you're lucky, people from back to front.

There is no business class, the seats in row 5 are exactly the same as the ones in row 15. The reason for the foot rest is that these seats are right behind the FC seats, which have footrests. Row 5 is the best row on the plane, legroom etc... except it has smaller overhead bins because of the wing and the center fuel tank right above rows 5,6, and 7. So the FAs weren't flying to you or trying to ruin your experience for you - they're just doing their job.

Where were you going and how was the flight?

I meant First, not business, sorry.

Yes, row 5 had great legroom.

I was heading MSP-HPN. Flight was great. I was certainly not offended having to move -- just hadn't heard of this issue on the ARJ before.

Interesting. The UAX 146 has one seating area. The entire airplane is considered zone "A". You never have to move people.

I wonder if this is an issue because of the 1st class section on the Mesaba planes?

It is actually quite rare when we have to move people. The situation just has to be perfect in order for it to happen. Bags are usually put into the aft bins to counter act the nose heavyness, but sometimes with the fuel load (which would probably have been full going to HPN) and bag count and other factors the need to move people back and forth presents itself. The airplane with only 69 seats (but being designed for 85) may have something to do with it. In addition, that's also why we'll never be overweight with bags, people and fuel - but we will "bulk" out with bags. That means with 69 people and their steamer trunks there may not be enough room for everyones bag.
