Strange Planes Over North Texas Today

Sat Jul 26, 2003 6:40 am

I just got in from driving Dallas-Oklahoma City. About 10 miles from the boarder of Texas and Oklahoma, two "fighter jet" looking planes came directly across I-35, in formation, extremely low. I really couldn't believe how low they were. They came from the east and went directly west. Then, they made a sharp turn to the north, and came back from the west, going east, and buzzed the interstate again at an extremely low altitude. They disappeared off to the east. I couldn't make out what type of plane they were, but they seemed to have a single jet engine, with a small wing-type object on the front, and a larger wing behind. It almost looked like a large missile, but it seemed a lot smaller than a fighter aircraft. Anyone know what was going on?

There are several MOAs from Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls that they could of spilled out of if they were T-38s (though T-38s have two 'smaller' looking engines).

Also I do many vet-retiree funerals around Oklahoma for the honor guard and sometimes there is a fly by, of Aircraft the person flew, at the funeral. For Example, in Ada the other week we had a B-25 from San Marcos fly up for a retired Colonels funeral.

Those are two of my speculations. I drive that route quite often and have never seen the Talons that low, though I have seen them before.

Lt-AWACS,

I looked up the pictures of a T-38 and you were exactly right. That's exactly what they were. From a distance, the two small engines look like one. Also, I guess I got front and back mixed up, (they were flying fairly fast). The smaller "wing" was the horizontal stablizer on the back. Thanks for getting back to me so soon!

No Problem,
Sheppard AFB, is home to ENJJPT- Euro-NATO Joint Jet pilot training. So students from many countries fly T-37s and T-38s all over North Texas and South Oklahoma. Since these planes are for Training they don't fly with GCI or AWACS coverage usually and own their own airspace for certain blocks of time. No idea if it was a spillout or intentional showboating for maybe a graduating class, though showboating is not tolerated especially in UPT.

Happy Spotting, the T-38 is a very hard plane to ID with its small silhouette, good eyes.
