I would have to go with American.... Does Delta still fly the md-11?

I think Continental will have it, once the MD80's are gone. Also JetBlue for the most uniform fleet. AirTran will have a new fleet ONCE the DC9's are retired come October 2003

AA way to many fleet types and with in those types different configurations also. UA also way to many fleet types as well.

Southwest.

Its fleet is ideally tailored to its service, efficient, reliable, and conducive to profitable operation.

Best fleet...well, from an economical point of view, I'd say...Southwest (nothing but 737's).

From a spotter's point of view Big grin (most diverse) I'd probably say Delta or United, not AA (too many MD-80's)

A few years ago, I'd vote for Delta. With many twinjets and 727's, L-1011's and MD-11's, it was quite varied. I still like DL's fleet, but the recent retirement of the 727 (and TriStar a few years ago) is the unfortunate trend with all airlines. Fuel economy and efficiency are serious issues, but from a spotter's perspective, they signal the demise of some great aircraft!

UA: They have all the great boeings. 744, 772, 763/2, 752, 733/5, and once upon a time, the DC-10, L-1011, 727, DC-8. The only thing they lack was the MD-11.

AA would have to be second.

I'd say Continental and Delta. They have a smaller number of aircraft types than some of their competitors. Their 737s, MD-80s, 757s, 767s and 777s basically cover their diversified networks well. American, United and Northwest seem to have more varied aircraft types and in some cases older fleets but with it comes a higher upkeep and more expense. Southwest too has the perfect 737 fleet for their route network as does Jetblue's A320s.

I like US Airways fleet. A320 series, A330, B767 B757 B737..I like their use of the A320 series the most. Especially the cute A319.

Yes, but DL's MD-80 operation isn't nearly the size that AA's is. DL operates 120, while AA operates 362, three times more than DL.

Yes, US Airways has really rationalized the fleet over the last few years. Now, it's down to four main types (A32S, A330, 737, 757/767). Much more rational without the DC-9, 737-200, F-100, BAe 146, etc...

I'd say American and United from a spotters point of view. I like airlines that operate a diverse range of aircraft types. Airlines like Southwest and Jetblue are a bit boring from a spotters point of view coz it's just the same thing over and over again.

Personally I like Delta's or Continenetals because they are all Boeing (Yes, I know the MD-80/90/11's are McD's but I still consider them to be Boeing's.)

I would like United too, but I don't like the whole Boeing and Scarebus mix.

If it ain't a Boeing, I'm not going

I personally like Alaska. MD-80s, 737-400s, -700s, and the most gorgeous plane to come out lately the 737-900. For diversity of photo opps, I think I would go with AA.

Ill go will US Airways. They have a great fleet. (A319, A320, A330, 737, 757, 767, etc...) But im not just being prejudice towards US because they are my fav airline. CO gives them a pretty good run for there money though.

Obviously Continental, in terms of flexibility, age, and cost savings. Although they've paid dearly (in loans), the 737/757/767/777 offers a huge fuel/crew/maintenance savings. The 757 and 767 share the same type certs for pilot crews, so pilots can be switched between 67's and 57's whenever needed, offering increased flexibility. The 764's and 762's allow CO to switch planes to markets with alternating/seasonal demand without worrying about crew and maintenance headaches. The 777's are perfect for Asian and high demand Euro routes.

Any airline, ESPECICALLY American would love to have CO's fleet right now.

(BTW, I realize some MD80's are still around, but not many, and they'll be gone soon..)

From an economical view I'd say jetBlue and Southwest have pretty good fleets. jetBlue with all A320s and Southwest with all 737s

From my view as a spotter I would have to say United on account they have my two favorite airplanes, 744 and 772.

There old, there verneable, but I like NWA fleet of DC9s and there more modern A320/19s and 757s. Good stuff. I don't think being older means that NWA pays any more in upkeep for their nines than other airlines pay for newer types. Love the new scheme. GO NWA GO!

I say the US Airways fleet is one of the best....Crew training prolly isn't as expensive for them either...

Mainline Fleet (Current)
A319/A320/A321.......Pilot's can fly all types
A330-300................A pilot can fly this type coming from the A32X with little training.

737-300-400............Pilot's can fly both types
757-200/767-200......Pilot's can fly both types

Mainline Fleet (Future) *2006*
A319/A320/A321.......Pilot's can fly all types
A330-200/A330-300..Pilot's can fly both types

This is going to save US Airways some money! Crew training is going to be cheaper and so is maintenance. Big grin

Fly US Airways !!! Big grin

The most economical fleets will be the single type operations like Southwest with nothing but 737's and Jet Blue with nothing but A320's, but I'll stick with the regional revolution and go with Express Jet and their ERJ fleet.

USair:

Does US Airways plan to aquire the A318? It seems it would make a good fit and give US more flexibility in the 100 seat market.
Plus it has same crew requirements as the rest of the A320 family.

Alaska, Delta, Continental, Southwest I would say have the best US fleets. However Delta and Continental do have too many Regional Jets.

NW and Frontier the worst.

From a survivability standpoint!

Simplified Fleet plans.

1. Airtran
B717, B737NG

2. Southwest
B737NG, B737C

3. JetBlue
A320

Is it any wonder that the Giants such as United, American, USairways, Delta, etc. are struggling? The fleet diversity costs MONEY!

Yes, but airlines like WN, FL, B6, etc., don't have the nationwide and worldwide networks like AA, UA, DL, CO, etc. that require different sizes and ranges of aircraft.

An AirTran 717 can't get you to SYD or LHR.

I know you spotters hate it, but I'm glad that we (Southwest) only fly 737's. It makes it so much easier from a maintenance standpoint. Aircraft are so complex, it's hard to learn all the various systems of different aircraft.

I also choose Southwest, because its "fleet is ideally tailored to its service, efficient, reliable, and conducive to profitable operation."

Any idea when its B732s will be withdrawn?

To Chicago757,

I happen to like the current UA livery, even if it is a little boring (I prefer "conservative"). Perhaps it needs a tweak or two, but I like it more than the 70s /80s old scheme. Also, please do not call the current scheme "new" as it has been around since the early 90s. Hardly new... many liveries have come and gone since then!

While having one aircraft type in your fleet is unbeatable from an economic point of view (JetBlue, Southwest, etc.), it is not the most interesting. I agree with one of the other people that AA has too many MD-80s/90s to be very interesting. And Delta's MD-11 fleet is too thin to really be a big factor.
My vote to best fleet, solely from a spotter's point of view, is UA. Plenty of fleet types and equipment. Runner up is NW. Not too many chances to see tri-jets in action, but NW is still committed to the DC-10 program (for now).

But as we all know, a varied fleet type may make the spotter happy, but it doesn't do much for the accountants. This is why increasingly smaller fleet types will be the norm, even with the remaining legacy "giant" carriers.
JetBlue is getting a second aircraft type, the Embraer 190, in 2005. Should be interesting to see that.
None shall pass!!!!

For me only NWA and UA come to my mind, all others have boring fleets.
